2 History Began in Fall, 1997 with SC s 3 Research Universities: Clemson (Upstate) Medical University of SC (Coast) University of SC (Central) Added 13 additional schools in 2000

3 SC Sustainable Universities Initiative CLEMSON 15,257 students 1,032 faculty Undergraduate, graduate programs Extension offices throughout the state USC 28,445 students 1,878 faculty Undergraduate, graduate, law and medical schools Urban and rural campuses MUSC 2,321 students Approximately 500 regular faculty Primarily graduate and professional students

4 Objectives Members of the university community will understand their environmental, social and economic impact on the world Our campuses will be models for sustainable use of resources

5 Clemson University University Master Plan 2002: : Campus architecture should support the University s commitment to optimize energy usage, protect air and water resources of the general environment, and conserve materials and resources associated with the construction of buildings. The LEED system is but one example of the type of standards that the University will consider for sustainable design.
