The course will include focus on UX and UE design. The course will also include projects that develop skills in working with CSS and HTML. Course Texts and Materials Materials needed: TBA Course Description This course is designed to start up where ARTS 2190 Web Design left off and take each student to a much higher level with their understanding and skills in design for the web. We will look closely at the changing face of design for the web and the various changes to jobs within the industry looking closely at UX and UI design. The course will work a great deal with HTML (writing code in TextWrangler and not in a WYSISYG editor such as Muse) and CSS. We will build some work in Photoshop and Muse. We will also build out problem solutions using Bootstrap or Foundations to build responsive design pages. Tighten your shoelaces and sharpen you pencils and prepare for a transformative experience is the ever-changing world of web design. Develop skills in working directly with CSS and HTML in relation to Foundations and/or Bootstrap 2. Create a portfolio of web site designs that show a wide range of visual problem solutions. 3. Develop a personal web design approach and process that is clearly and precisely articulated in writing. 4. Develop skills in working with Wordpress themes. 5. Established a web presence with their own web site and domain. You will be required for the course to purchase a web site hosting plan and domain name. Page 2

Feedback and crits will help direct and improve the projects and will be done at appropriate times during the term. Each project for the term will be evaluated with this grading criteria plus specific grading criteria that is unique to each project. (See Weekly Projects for specifics for each project) The grade is a balance between Process and Product. 1. Progress in understanding and demonstrated growth in art/design. (Process) 2. Midterm grades As this is an class given during an abroad program no mid-term grade will be given. Attendance Policy 1. Class attendance is required for each scheduled class time. Each student is required to be prepared with questions and finished work each for each class meeting and due dates for the term. Absences and lateness to class will be recorded for each class meeting. (Process) 2. As this is a class taken on an abroad there are no excused or unexcused absences. Academic Honesty Policy A Principian is expected to pursue a life of integrity (see The Principia Pledge and the Principia Community Commitment, pages 7 and 8-9.) Therefore academic honesty is essential to a Principia College education. Students are expected to refrain from lying for academic gain, cheating, plagiarizing, unauthorized sharing of work, any form of misrepresenting another s work as one s own, and all other forms of academic misconduct. 4 are also expected to refrain from helping others with any of these and other forms of misconduct. Faculty are required to report incidents in violation of this academic honesty policy to the Scholastic Committee via the registrar. The course faculty may impose consequences for academic misconduct that include, but are not limited to, failure on the assignment and/or failure in the course. Additional institutional consequences may include suspension. The faculty member reserves the right to make changes to this published syllabus if it is in the best interest of the educational development of this class. Any such changes will be announced as soon as possible and, insofar as practical, after consultation with the whole class. 5 The Projects - or at least as far as I can see them structured at the moment Project 01 - The Refresher Project - Photoshop and Muse solutions This project is designed to fill in gaps and holes in the understanding and use of both Photoshop and Muse to solve visual problems in web design. The project will involve creating designs for a wide range of visual problems that address areas such as navigation, typography, integration of texture and images, setting of text, linking pages, using the footer, and building out a site map and wire frames. Aspects of the project will begin to address UX and UI design approaches. This project will take a more traditional approach to design designing with a WYSIEWYG program and strengthen the skills in the layout and design of pages. Another area of focus will be on the use of space (composition) and building out pages with a grid approach. This skill will later be critical for the project that will work directly with HTML and CSS as these both build from the back-end (or that is at least how it feels to a designer who is used to layout and design for print). More details to be announced. Project 02 - Diving into HTML and CSS - Bootstrap and/or Foundations Designing web sites that are responsive adapting to the platform on which they are being viewed and used is a critical skill for a web designer. This project will introduce the use of Bootstrap or Foundations (still deciding on which to use). Both are straight HTML and CSS with all the necessary javascript built in to create pages that are responsive. The class will not cover writing or editing of javascript. This will be a team project. Each team will be assigned a web site that needs to be adapted to a responsive design approach. Each team will build out a site using only TextWrangler working with the Foundations/Bootstrap HTML/CSS code and Photoshop. Project 03 - Wordpress - CMS on the web The focus of this project is to develop skills in working with the CMS approach to web design. Content Management Systems (CMS) such as Wordpress create a structure, look and feel for web sites that can be modified and enhanced through a wide range of approaches such as modifications to the CSS or site plugins. Students for this project will write up a proposal for a site, gather the needed content for the site, and choose a Wordpress theme appropriate to the goals of the site. They will then install the theme, insert the content and modify and use the theme. A critical project for Project 05 in which each student will purchase their own web site and establish their own unique web site. Page 5

6 Project 04 - Establishing your place on the web By this point in the term each student will be prepared for creating their own web site. Each student will write out the criteria, goals and outcomes for their site. In addition each student will write out their design process and create a short presentation of that process. Each site will go through their design process and have as one of its outcomes examples of their wire-framing process, site maps, and rough design ideas. The purpose is to show off their skills, show their working knowledge of design and the technical side of web design, create a site that will be used to secure a job or internship. The content and materials for the site must be of their own making or have written permission to be used. Each student will purchase a hosting plan and domain after researching the options for this. Project 05 - The Team Project This will serve as the final project for the course. Depending upon the number of students in the course the class will form teams of 2-3 team members. Each team will then be given a design challenge to solve within a limited amount of time. The design problem will be created to test all skills that have been developed to this point in the term from both ARTS 290 Web Design and this course. Each team will maintain time logs, document work done by each team member, and show all work. Each team will present to the class their final solutions. Students will be evaluated on how well they assess and use the strengths of the team, how well their final solution solves the problem from the view point of the client and end-user of the site, use of color, type, shape and space. Technology use will also factor in the evaluation. The solution must be up to date in the use of technology and be appropriate for a wide range of viewing platforms. Criteria for evaluation: 1. Students will be evaluated on how well they assess and use their strengths and skills gained from other design classes and from this class 2. How well their solutions solve the design problem from the view point of the client and end-user of the site 3. Use of basic design principles and the use of color, type, shape and space. 4. Technology use will also factor in the evaluation. The solution must be up to date in the use of technology and be appropriate for a wide range of viewing platforms. 5. Use of time 6. Progress and change in their understanding and development of the design process. The expectation is for growth and change that is obvious, documented and explainable. Page 6
