2 Introduction and high level description of scope of service In 1 paragraph, describe what service(s) you deliver and to whom The overall strategic objectives of The Hunterian through to 2014/15 were set out in a draft Plan presented to the Hunterian s Strategic Advisory Board in October These are aligned in support of the University of Glasgow s Strategic Plan Glasgow 2020: A Global Vision and address the key actions of 2020: To deliver excellent research To deliver excellent student experience And to enhance global reach and reputation To create the infrastructure that will deliver these goals These objectives also reflect and align to objectives and performance measures set by the Scottish Funding Council for its Museums, Galleries and Collections Grant funding for These require The Hunterian to provide: An appropriate level of collections care and management A service to the wider research community A high-quality teaching and learning experience to the wider HE community Contribution towards SFC s widening participation objective The Plan aims to deliver a new mission for the Hunterian as a facilitator and contributor to the research and learning objectives of UoG and as a cultural asset with national and international reach. The Hunterian will make a tangible contribution to UoG s mission to provide an intellectually stimulating learning environment. Drawing on our encyclopaedic historical collections, we will support and engage with UoG ambitions for interdisciplinary approaches to research, teaching and knowledge exchange. To this end, we will focus on our core mission to care for and develop our collections and share and communicate our knowledge about them. Nationally Recognised as a collection of National Significance, The Hunterian aims to develop as an internationally leading university museum and gallery service. We aim to be among the top university cultural institutions in the world. The Hunterian will benchmark innovation and best practice in the university museum and gallery sector. We will create and sustain local, national and international strategic partnerships to support our aims. 2
3 Engagement with stakeholders and service users How do you engage with stakeholders/users? What mechanisms do you use to determine users needs and how do you gather feedback on the service you provide? Please indicate any improvements that could/will be made. In order to ensure better alignment with the needs of its stakeholders and users, over the last two years, The Hunterian has significantly developed its governance structure, replacing the Museum & Gallery Committee with a fit-for-purpose Strategic Development Board (HSDB) and an Academic Advisory Board (HAAB). Other structural and staffing changes detailed in this document have enhanced greatly The Hunterian s ability to respond to these groups. 4 Delivering Excellent Research Context (paragraph identifying how your service helps deliver the University s strategic priorities) The Hunterian aims to contribute to and to facilitate GU research impact. In terms of concept, content and design we will ensure that our public galleries and special exhibitions educate, stimulate and challenge by exploiting UoG research across our diverse collections and exploring cross-disciplinary opportunities. We will develop closer links and activities with our cognate Subject Areas. In the interests of research and knowledge exchange, The Hunterian will continue to collaborate actively in its UK-wide and international loans programme. Objectives for improving the service provided and assisting the delivery of the University s Strategic Plan Headline Objectives Actions Performance measures Build closer links with cognate Subject Areas and ensure greater engagement in research agendas, knowledge exchange and public engagement Development and approval of Hunterian Academic Strategy, and embed in curatorial academic plans and appropriate contribution to REF. Ensure research driven gallery and special exhibition programme, exploring interdisciplinary themes Act as key partner in Collaborative Framework Agreement with Glasgow Life (GL) in the area of collections research and outreach Develop enhanced collections research and learning infrastructure for UoG and other learning bodies Hunterian Academic Advisory Convene 2 further consultation seminars p.a. 5 Ensure collections are well documented and enhance access and utility of Hunterian records and images for greater research and learning use Rationalisation of Hunterian anatomy and pathology collections to create single enhanced research resource 15,000 Greek coins in collections to be syllogised through British Academy Sylloge Nummorum Graecorum project following digitisation in last four years (funded by Academy). Nine volumes to be produced with collaboration from British Museum, St. Andrews University and Royal Numismatic Society. Complete AHRC-funded Mackintosh Architecture project Procure, migrate and launch Complete procurement and upgrading of new Hunterian collections Hunterian digital records and image bank by management system (CMS); Autumn Go live early develop Research and Curators to revise and develop Hunterian Collections pages of Hunterian website collections and research pages by website mid Consult cognate Subject Areas and Schools to ensure appropriate configuration for research, teaching, training The volumes will be published by the British Academy. Completion is envisaged within five years (2017). Develop final programme for delivery of outputs including exhibition proposals and funding. Project now in final stages; minor delays in main E&B contract for Anatomy Building. Final evaluation, reporting and MGS funding claim to be submitted by March Ensure involvement of new Centre for Medical Humanities Two volumes already published, two in progress and three more will shortly commence. The project will greatly enhance access to this outstanding resource for the University s students, the wider research community, and a worldwide audience through the SNG website. Providing an Excellent Student Experience Context (paragraph identifying how your service helps deliver the University s strategic priorities) The Hunterian will continue to invest resources in create an enriching student experience ad and relevant student learning offer. We will engage with UoG Colleges and Schools to provide curatorial expertise and content at Masters PGT and in Post-Graduate Research. The Hunterian collections can create multiple opportunities for broad-based, interdisciplinary research and teaching in the arts, humanities, social, life and natural sciences. Our expertise encourages and facilitates public engagement and knowledge exchange opportunities for our student body. Aligned to UoG Graduate attributes, The Hunterian will address the work-related learning and employability needs of the UoG student body. We will establish innovative work-related learning and volunteering opportunities at all degree levels. The strategy will also enable The Hunterian to develop a creative economy of professional direction and voluntary participation. The Hunterian can make a real difference to the UoG learning experience and student satisfaction rates, including helping to attract and integrate the international student community. One of the greatest challenges remaining in this area is to achieve the levels of successful engagement which we believe should be possible with the School of Education in the delivery of mutually advantageous student learning programmes. We will continue to use every avenue available to us since we believe that students in this school could gain immeasurably from the experiences we are now offering in other disciplines. 5

Scope and propose new Hunterian courses for Open Studies programmes in art history, archaeology, Egyptology and natural and medical history, history of science Develop proposals for pilot programme for museum education at UG and PGT Levels. 7 Extending Global Reach and Reputation Context (paragraph identifying how your service helps deliver the University s strategic priorities) The Hunterian s Nationally Significant collections are an asset with wide national and international reach. Not only are our galleries, special exhibitions, publications, public programme and loans activity a window on the University of Glasgow, they are driven by the latest research and have wide international impact. We aim to develop creative and innovative projects that exploit UoG research for enhanced public understanding of the arts, humanities, and earth, life and medical sciences. Through our collections-centered approach and the building of strategic partnerships we will develop new methodologies and set benchmarks for knowledge exchange and public engagement in the university museum sector. A key objective is to create more opportunities for public access and use of our collections. We have recently extended our public visitor hours and introduced full weekend openings for the first time. Objectives for improving the service provided and assisting the delivery of the University s Strategic Plan Headline Objectives Actions Performance measures Take leading UK role in developing university museums policy and practice Maintain active role in management and agenda of University Museums in Scotland group (UMiS) and University Museums Group UK (UMG); maintain active participation in implementation of MGS National Strategy for museums Develop UoG Internationalisation Develop closer collaboration project, focussing on building with Rabat University, overseas professional capacity and Morocco, to assist in collections expertise with overseas development of new National partners Museum of Natural History Develop Hunterian audiences and establish sustainable network of support Enhance public understanding of Hunterian collections and UoG research through a programme of special and in-focus exhibitions Develop local network of support and patronage for the Hunterian and its collections needs. Governance through GU channels agreed at HSDB meeting (Oct 2012). Formal arrangements to be established in liaison with DAO.
