13 Message from the MCA President Rose Neufeld I am honoured and pleased to serve as President of the Manitoba Curling Association for the season. This past summer Ian Staniloff, who held the position of Executive Director of the MCA for 12 years, left the MCA. We thank him for his service and wish him all the best in his future endeavors. We welcome Shane Ray as our new Executive Director. We are confident that he will be a great asset to our association as we move forward to meet the challenges of the 21st century. I want to take this opportunity to thank our sponsors, many of whom have placed ads in this yearbook. Without their support, it would be impossible to hold our bonspiels and Provincial Championships. I encourage all curlers to support our sponsors. Thank you also to the many volunteers who work so diligently at various curling clubs and events. You actively demonstrate the passion that so many have for the great sport of curling and it is so often a thankless task. And finally, thank you to the staff at the MCA office for your commitment, dedication and hard work throughout the year. You all make my job so much easier. I wish everyone a great season of curling and friendship as we move ever closer to the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. Rose Neufeld President 11

15 Message from the Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba John Harvard, P.C., O.M. A s the Queen s representative in Manitoba, and patron of the Manitoba Curling Association (MCA), I am pleased to extend vice-regal greetings as another curling season begins. Curling is a very popular sport in our province and one of the reasons many Manitobans look forward to winter. This game requires a combination of physical skills, patience, concentration and long hours of practice. Teams must work together towards a common goal in the true spirit of sportsmanship. And while the players are on the ice, spectators across the province gather to cheer on their favourite competitors and share community camaraderie. Throughout the years, Manitoba has produced more than its share of Canadian and world champion curlers. Thanks to MCA s strong presence and support, I am certain we will continue this proud tradition. Best wishes to MCA and all participants for another successful year. The Honourable John Harvard, P.C., O.M. Lieutenant Governor Manitoba 13

16 Message from the Premier of Manitoba Gary Doer I t is my pleasure to extend greetings on behalf of the Province of Manitoba to everyone participating in the curling season. After the enthusiasm shown during last year s Brier, there can be no doubt that the great roarin game thrives in Manitoba. Though some of the top curlers in the world compete in clubs across the province, for Manitobans, curling is still about community; it is about friends coming together, honing their skills and having a good time. Through the outstanding efforts of the many dedicated volunteers we have here in Manitoba, giving lessons, organizing leagues and bonspiels, local curling clubs are a buzz of activity all season. I want to thank the Manitoba Curling Association for all their hard work and extend best wishes to every rink for another successful season. I hope everyone will look back on this season and remember it as one of great shots and great friends. Gary Doer Premier 14 MCAYEarbooK2008/09

17 Message from the President of Sport Manitoba Jeff Hnatiuk S port Manitoba is pleased to join the Manitoba Curling Association (MCA) and member clubs in welcoming the many thousands of curlers across our province to another season. As one of our province s largest participation sports, many enthusiasts at both the recreational and competitive level enjoy curling. The significance of the sport in Manitoba and its contribution to the foundation of our sport community is invaluable. As a life long sport, curling contributes to the physical and social wellbeing of participants while fostering community and volunteer development and providing economic benefits that are derived from hosting major events. Manitoba s curling programs have enabled us to become a leader in Canada. Developmental programs exist for curlers of all abilities fostering their growth and development and allowing our best curlers to achieve at the highest levels of competition. The success of these programs is a result of the leadership and support provided by the MCA and experienced, dedicated and industrious volunteers. From grass roots programs to building Olympians, curling has become a leading sport in Manitoba. On behalf of Sport Manitoba, I extend best wishes to all curlers and the Manitoba Curling Association for another successful season. On behalf of Sport Manitoba, it is my pleasure to convey greetings to curlers 15

21 Message from the Canadian Curling Association Mitchell Tarapasky O n behalf of the Canadian Curling Association Board of Governor s Chair Fran Todd in Ontario, and the staff of the CCA, it is my pleasure to bring greetings and best wishes for a successful and rewarding year to all members of the Manitoba Curling Association and the thousands of curlers throughout the province. There have been plenty of changes over the last year at the CCA including progress on the implementation of a policy governance model. Moving forward we are diligently working with our partners and stakeholders to build a much improved Canadian Curling Association that already is showing signs of great success as we move closer with great anticipation to the Olympic Trials in 2009 and the Olympic Games in What a great time to belong to one of the best, most respected sports in all of Canada, curling. In 2008 Winnipeg and Manitoba played host to the Tim Hortons Brier and I would like to take this opportunity to thank Host Committee Chairman Barry Greenberg and the 1,000+ volunteers who staged a first class event and who all went that extra mile to do the sport and this province proud. The event was very successful from all accounts and many of the curling clubs in the province, as well as the sport, will benefit long term. I would also like to express best wishes to President Rose Neufeld and her Board of Directors as well as MCA staff for a successful year of curling in Manitoba. You are all about a bright and exciting future for the sport of curling in this province, and I along with the CCA, are here to work with you in that regard. Curling is in great hands in the province and I look forward to working with you this season and beyond. To all of the curlers in Manitoba I wish you good curling and encourage you to support your local curling facility every way that you can. Introduce a new curler to the game, volunteer at the local rink, or simply just join a league once or twice a week. Curling remains a great winter pastime where friendships are made everyday and memories last a lifetime. Have a great season!! Mitchell Tarapasky CCA Board of Governors 19

27 Team Jones Road to Gold By Team Jones E very athlete at some point in their career has envisioned the moment. The one where you are standing on the podium proudly singing your national anthem after winning a gold medal for your country. We still cannot believe that we had the chance to experience that vision when we won the 2008 Women s World Championship in Vernon. It was a dream come true for us, to be sure. It was an emotional and incredibly proud time that we wish everyone could have the chance to experience. It was the perfect ending to a season of hard work, personal sacrifice, determination and discipline. But most of all for us it was just the beginning. Looking back to when we first stepped on the ice last season in Oslo, Norway we knew it was going to be a great year. Not in terms of wins vs. losses (you never really know how those numbers will unfold), but more because of the magic we felt performing as a team. It was clear right from the start that we were going to enjoy the journey together, regardless of what the scoreboards looked like. From Oslo we travelled to Calgary, London, Red Deer, Abbotsford and New Glasgow; then to Medicine Hat for the Continental Cup (fun!), and Berne, Switzerland for the Internationaler Berner Damen-Cup. By the time the Provincial Championship began in Gimli we had played almost 70 games in just over 2 months. But with passion and determination we kept our brooms on the ice and fought hard to win the title. We were more excited than words could express to have the chance to once 25

28 again represent Manitoba at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts. And what a Canadian Championship! The caliber of play from all teams in Regina was phenomenal. The fans were amazing, the ice was fantastic, and the facility could not be beat. We started out with some fun milk-jug curling outdoors, and ended up playing in one of the most exciting women s finals to date. We experienced one of our best team shots ever with a come-around draw in the 10th end; we enjoyed watching one of our own win the Ford Hot Shots competition; and we proved to ourselves that we can come back from any deficit. Winning the Scotties Tournament of Hearts was absolutely thrilling. We felt on top of the world before we even got to Vernon! And the Worlds was everything we dreamed it would be, and more. To play as the home team with the maple leaf on our backs was extremely special to us. We had a lot of close games against very tough teams (which always makes it exciting!) and countless heart-warming moments with our families, friends and fans. The semi-final against Japan was one of our finest moments together. Down three points playing the 9th end is not an ideal situation but it s one that we knew we could turn around. And though many have asked us what we were thinking as the last rock in the final against China curled down the sheet the answer is honestly nothing different than any other shot. All we can ever ask for is a shot to win, and we are just so thankful for the opportunity whenever we have it that we don t think about the situation, or about what s at stake. We think only about what we have to do, and how as team we can make anything possible. Which is why singing O Canada on the podium in March was considered a beginning for us rather than an ending. It will always be a career-defining moment for all of us, but as a team we are always focused on the job at hand. We love to play. We love to compete. We always look forward to getting even better to working hard to enjoying our time in the trenches together as we tackle the coming season. There is always more to sport than medaling. There is the pure joy of performing, and the challenge of setting goals and working to achieve them. That is what we come back for time and time again. Medal or no medal, worlds or no worlds. Of course, we could not be where we are today without the support of many people. Our families are our rocks, and the support we receive from them is immeasurable. Our many friends are our cheerleaders, and our fans can often be a driving force for us. Our home clubs that we are so proud to be a part of (St. Vital 26 MCAYEarbooK2008/09
