4 GREETING Welcome Message from the Dean: Tradition and Innovation Throughout history, Kyoto has been at the center of Japanese society and culture. Today, Kyoto is a world-class innovation center that simultaneously supports a number of traditional industries. Kyoto is considered by many to be the best college town in Japan, with over 40 universities and colleges, about 160,000 students, and nearly 7,000 international students from around the world. The Faculty of Economics at Kyoto University, founded in 1919, is one of the most historical faculties of its kind in Japan. A number of great scholars have appeared in our faculty since its inception. Hajime Kawakami, the renowned master of literary style as well as Marxist economist, was one of the faculty s earliest professors. Three economists who taught at our faculty, Yasuma Takata, Kei Shibata, and Hideo Aoyama, collectively constitute the Kyoto School of modern economic theory. Michio Morishima, known as the one who raised the level of economics in Japan to the international standard, was a student of Hideo Aoyama (Takashi Negishi, Kyoto School of Modern Economic Theory, Kyoto Economic Review, 73-1, 2004). Masahiko Aoki, who graduated from Tokyo University and was one of the pioneers of comparative institutional analysis, served as a professor at the Institute of Economic Research in Kyoto University from 1969 to Nowadays, our faculty has over 50 teaching staff working at the frontiers of economics across a comprehensive range of disciplines. At the same time, we maintain the liberal academic tradition fostered by professors in earlier times. This unique combination of traditional and innovative achievements has earned our institution a prestigious reputation as a leader in the economics research and education. The undergraduate program has over 1,000 students and provides a variety of curriculum maps combining focused specialty with broad interdisciplinary studies. We traditionally place great importance on small-group instruction through introductory, intermediate, and advanced seminars. We take pride in the impressive number of business people and government officials that have graduated from our faculty and gone on to enjoy great success overseas as well as in Japan. Our graduate school, established in 1953, now has over 250 masters and doctoral students and is also host to approximately 100 international students. Through course work, participation in seminars, and supervised research, graduate students are taught to conduct theoretical and empirical analysis at the highest level. In 2009, we launched the International Graduate Programme for East Asia Sustainable Development Studies and have since welcomed more than 40 new international students. We are proud that our graduates have an outstanding record of research accomplishments and publications. We provide an exceptional environment in which to study economics. The atmosphere in our faculty is highly intellectual and collegial. The faculty library houses about 550,000 volumes, documents, and periodicals, and information technology networks are well equipped. We are delighted to open our doors to creative and enterprising young people with a rich sense of humanity across all nationalities. 6 MISSIONS AND IDEALS Kyoto University Graduate School of Economics is proud of its ethos of respect for freedom and autonomy and its tradition of valuing creative academic research. Nurtured in this distinctive climate, graduate students develop rich culture and scholarship, growing into both creative, highly specialized researchers and professionals with superior expertise and solid analytical skills. In the Master s program, students aspiring to a career in academic research are provided with formal classes and one-on-one supervision centering on the production of a master s thesis. Through this combination we aim to introduce students to the wealth of existing scholarship in economics and related fields, and to equip them with the basic academic expertise and analytical skills essential for independent research. Operated in an environment where freedom and autonomy are valued, the Doctoral program provides students seeking to obtain a doctoral degree in economics following the completion of their Master s degree with the opportunities and supervision needed to pursue their research. The aim of this program is to cultivate researchers capable of taking on new challenges in the field of economics and key problems in social and economic spheres, and thereby addressing the needs of wider society. The ultimate ideal of academic endeavor in Japan is to contribute to the maintenance of a peaceful, prosperous and harmonious global community and the creation of a brighter future for all. In line with this ideal, the fundamental mission of our graduate school is to cultivate creative experts capable of applying insights, knowledge, and skills in the discipline of economics to address a variety of challenges in contemporary society. In order to discharge our mission, we have assembled a faculty body characterized by diversity and advanced expertise, providing a broad-based education encompassing economic philosophy, economic theory, economic history, economic policy, applied economics, management, and accounting. We value multidimensional research methods and a rich diversity of research themes. The graduate school hosts many seminars and workshops, welcomes numerous visiting researchers from both beyond Kyoto University and outside Japan, and pursues many different special projects. Graduate students have the opportunity to improve their research skills through active participation in these activities in addition to their regular research supervision. We envisage that such experiences will enable students to grow into innovative research pioneers with a broad base of knowledge, expertise in creative and theorydriven analysis, and a cosmopolitan outlook on the world. Moreover, in line with our expectation that many students completing our programs will go on to play leadership roles in education, academic research and other fields, we also seek to develop personal qualities of impartiality, tolerance, and rich humanism. 8 MASTER'S AND DOCTORAL PROGRAMS 6 Kyoto University Graduate School of Economics 2014

9 Overview Kyoto University Graduate School of Economics offers a five-year integrated program of research training centered on individual research supervision by faculty members. The Master's program is made up of basic courses, advanced courses, special lectures and master's thesis. It has six specialized major areas of research that provide curricular models indicating which basic courses are recommended, and which advanced courses are associated with each major area. In the Doctoral program, Doctoral Dissertation Supervision Committees composed of two or more faculty members for each student ensure that students are given supervision that will enable them to complete a dissertation in three years. Workshops are also organized to provide students with opportunities to present their research in progress and to foster high-level discussion and productive interaction. We actively operate a system of advanced entry to the Doctoral program for those who have obtained their Master's degrees at other universities or other graduate schools within Kyoto University. In addition to the regular advanced entry system, there is a special entrance examination for those who have completed Master's degrees at another graduate school within the university, and for those who already hold Master's degrees and have working experiences. In this way, we work to cultivate researchers from a diverse range of backgrounds. In 2009 we launched the International Graduate Programme for East Asia Sustainable Economic Development Studies (formerly, East Asia International Human Resource Development Course), where an academic year begins in October rather than April and courses are offered in English. This program focuses on multi-faceted, interdisciplinary, international research into economic issues facing Japan and the rest of East Asia. Students completing the program become academic researchers and professional economists capable of formulating practical solutions to social and economic problems and contributing to sustainable development in the region. The Graduate School of Economics has awarded a cumulative total of 1,650 Master's degrees and 951 Doctoral degrees (as of March 2014). Most of these alumni are working as academic researchers in universities, think tanks, and other organizations both within Japan and beyond. 10 International Graduate Programme for East Asia Sustainable Economic Development Studies There are a number of challenges that East Asia must address if it is to maintain its economic role as one of the leaders of the world. These include challenges relating to environmental stability, food and energy supplies, uneven development between agricultural and industrial sectors, widening income disparities and aging populations, and accountability of government and business sectors. Human resource development is crucial in meeting these developmental challenges. This programme is designed to provide international students with both advanced academic knowledge and practical skills. It consists of a two year Master s programme and a three year Doctoral programme, both starting from October. Our students are from a variety of countries including China, South Korea, Indonesia, Thailand, and Germany. Some Japanese students are also expected to join from October The programme is offered in English, and Japanese language skills are not required at the time of admission. The master s programme offers both basic and advanced courses through which students can enjoy a comprehensive curriculum. The Doctoral programme offers Overseas Field Research and International Graduate Student Workshop subjects through which students further develop a deep understanding of the current issues in East Asia. In addition to classes designed specifically for this programme, students will participate in selected courses at the Graduate School of Economics as well as other graduate schools. Students will develop academic knowledge and practical skills in international setting. We offer many opportunities to conduct field research at diverse sites such as large manufacturing plants and small factories, cutting-edge businesses and rural farming communities throughout East Asia so that students can develop a multidisciplinary and critical sense of reality. These are all needed to contribute to sustainable development in East Asia as academic researchers, government officials, or social entrepreneurs. 14 RESEARCH & EDUCATIONAL INITIATIVES 12 Kyoto University Graduate School of Economics 2014

15 Graduate School of Economics Project Center The Graduate School of Economics Project Center was established in November We have two primary missions. The first is to organize a set of project-based research initiatives to analyze contemporary economic society and activate an innovative financial system. The second is to help improve and develop educational techniques and teaching materials through analysis of contemporary industrial society. To achieve the first mission, we have launched six project-based research initiatives, hold seminars and workshops periodically, and circulate discussion papers through our website. The center is also actively employing young researchers and accepting tenured associate professors and lecturers to collaborate with us on our research initiatives. To achieve the second mission, three of the above six projects include the upgrading of graduate education in their research objectives. We hold a range of lunch-time workshops for graduate students. Director of Project Center Takanori IDA, Professor Center for East Asian Economic Studies (CEAES) The Kyoto University Graduate School of Economics Center for East Asian Economic Studies (CEAES) was established in 2002 to accelerate research related to the Chinese and East Asian economies, form a research network within the East Asian region, promote educational projects, and provide social returns with its research outputs. The main object of study in this center is the Chinese economy, which has achieved rapid growth under reform and opening-up policies. Its interdependence on the world economy and East Asian economies, and especially on the Japanese economy, has increased dramatically and may increase in the future. Therefore, it is becoming increasingly important to investigate how to construct an effective and impartial cooperative framework in this region. One mission of this center is to conduct research on this issue by using the academic research networks which have been created in the East Publication Grant The Graduate School offers publication subsidies to postdoctoral fellows and other early-career researchers. Among the publications subsidized to date, Yan Chengnan's 2010 monograph Chūgoku no Keizai Hatten to Seido Henka [Economic Development and Institutional Change in China] won the second annual (2011) Japan Society of Political Economy Encouragement Prize, while Yuichiro Kawana s Shakaitai no Seirigaku J.S. Miru to Shōgyō Shakai no Kagaku [The Physiology of Social Body : J.S. Mill and the Science of Industrial Society] (2011) was awarded the inaugural Nagoya University Mizuta Prize in Three volumes were selected in the 2013 academic year: Yusuke Yoshino, F. A. Hayek s Economic Thought -The Future of Liberal Society- (in Japanese) Yuki Miyake, The Basic Research of the Municipal Co-Financing Institution (in Japanese) Hiroaki Sasaki, Growth, Cycles, and Distribution: A Kaleckian Approach Asian region. We often hear that the 21st century will belong to Asia. Human resource development is the key factor to success in this Asian century. Another mission of the center is to cultivate individuals who will play important roles in the international arena and who can contribute to the development of East Asia, including China. Director of Center for East Asian Economic Studies Hiromi SHIOJI, Professor The Faculty of Economics Alumni Association Since its establishment in 1919, Faculty of Economics has produced 22,000 graduates, providing society with a wealth of talented individuals. The Alumni Association consists of alumni, current students, incumbent and retired faculty members. Every year, the Alumni Association Report is published and the general meeting is held in Kyoto. Branches have been established in Hokkaido, Tokyo, Nagoya, Kinki, Kagawa, Ehime, northern Kyushu, and southern Kyushu. Activities such as branch meetings and get-together parties take place in each region, including lectures and talks featuring invited faculty members. Since 2009, current students are welcomed to join the Association as special members. Through various occasions sponsored by the Association, they can get acquainted with our alumni and faculty members. 13

16 The Economic Association Composed primarily of faculty members of the Kyoto University Faculty of Economics, The Economic Association aims to advance research and educational endeavors in economics and business administration, propagate the outcomes of such endeavors, and contribute to the development of the Kyoto University Faculty of Economics (Rules of The Economic Association, Article 3). The association has been engaged in economics research and education at Kyoto University ever since its founding in 1919 the same year as the Faculty of Economics itself was established. The Economic Association s journal, Keizai Ronsō, publishes the outcomes of economic research at Kyoto University to audiences both within and beyond the campus. The journal was first published in 1915, before the faculty and association themselves were formed. Four volumes are published annually, each with an average of eight articles, and as of 2013 the journal had reached its 188th volume. In 1926 the association also launched The Kyoto University Economic Review (title later changed to The Kyoto Economic Review), the first English-language periodical publication in the field of economics in Asia. This journal is held in high regard both within Japan and internationally. The association also engages vigorously in other academic activities, including Chōsa to Kenkyū, a supplement to Keizai Ronsō published since 1991 and showcasing research outputs that make extensive use of figures, illustrations and supplementary materials, and Keizaigaku Sōsho, a series of collected works of faculty members launched in The Kyoto Economic Review The Kyoto University Economic Review was founded in 1926 as the first economic journal in English published in Asia. Since its inception, more than five hundred articles have been published in a total of 81 volumes, covering almost all areas of economic research. When Japan became isolated from the world during the war from , the journal became a crucial link between Japanese economists and the international academic community. It has introduced overseas researchers to the work of scholars including Hajime Kawakami, Yasuma Takata, Kei Shibata, Yoshinosuke Yagi, and Hideo Aoyama. To revive the innovative spirit of its founders, starting 2004, The Kyoto University Economic Review became an open refereed journal and its name was slightly altered to The Kyoto Economic Review (hereafter, KER). KER welcomes contributions from researchers both within and outside Kyoto University. KER is a comprehensive journal covering economic theory, econometrics, applied economics, management sciences, economic history, and economic thought. KER aims not only to communicate the results of advanced economic analysis, but also promote historical and philosophical perspectives in economic sciences. Furthermore, KER publishes groundbreaking case studies of economic and administrative behavior, leading to new developments in economic analysis. KUASU (Kyoto University Asian Studies Unit) The Kyoto University Asian Studies Unit (KUASU) is an interdisciplinary academic network, established in December 2012 through collaboration between six graduate schools, two research centers, and the International Center at Kyoto University. KUASU is pursuing a range of research and educational projects in partnership with universities and research institutes not only in Asia but worldwide (with a total of 54 partners at present) with a view to advancing mutual understanding among people in Asia and round the world, and addressing the challenges which they share. Our activities are directed to the achievement of the following three missions: 1. Creation of a world-leading research center for integrated Asian studies through international and interdisciplinary collaboration. 2. Global human resource development through an international collaborative program for graduate studies. 3. Establishment of a common foundation for mutual understanding and problem-solving through Asian studies. Additionally, International Graduate Programme for East Asia Sustainable Economic Development Studies offered at the Graduate School of Economics has become more fulfilling with the support of KUASU. 17 Joint Research Chairs In accordance with its basic philosophy, Kyoto University has strived to contribute to society through partnerships with industry and government. A new system of Joint Research Chairs has been established to enable both Kyoto University and its sponsoring corporations to make broader contributions to society and industry. This system involves joint project development with a view to creating innovative ideas. Graduate School of Economics has operated two Joint Research Chairs since Renewable Energy Economics Program Outline and Aims Research directed to the advancement of renewable energy must be pursued from two perspectives: overcoming technological hurdles, and designing social and economic systems that will promote renewable energy use. The former perspective has dominated research to date, but the Renewable Energy Economics Research Chair is committed instead to the latter perspective. Renewable energy is characterized essentially by dispersed power sources. The energy systems of the 20th century were optimized for unidirectional delivery of electricity from thermal, nuclear and other concentrated power generation sources to points of consumption. In the 21st century, however, we need to develop multidirectional energy networks that integrate thermal power sources with a diversity of other sources including renewable energy, storage cells, and cogeneration. This Research Chair brings social and economic perspectives to bear on issues such as how to formulate diversified networks and how to achieve the shift from concentrated to diversified energy models. It actively produces and disseminates proposals to inform policy development. Partner The Energy Strategy Institute Co., Ltd. YAMAKA, Kimio (Project Professor) The Energy Strategy Institute Co., Ltd. KATO, Shuichi (Project Professor) Building a Natural Capital Economy Outline and Aims How to build a natural capital economy has become a very crucial issue more than ever for international society, nations, and corporations. The 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development, also known as the Earth Summit held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, was an important opportunity for us to discuss approaches to conserve natural environment and to share the concept of sustainable development. In 2012, two decades after the Earth Summit, the Natural Capital Declaration was launched in the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development which also held in Rio de Janeiro. It is clear that international society has become aware of the importance of building a natural capital economy. Nowadays when we are facing the limitation of resources and energy, it is vital to find ways to realize green economy which reconciles both environmental conservation and economic growth. And we think that building a natural capital economy may become a key factor for this shift. In this course, we firstly aim to collect and develop a database of successful cases regarding natural capital economy in Japan and around the world. Next, we analyze the cases by focusing on the managerial know-how, human resource profiles, and organizational characteristics which may contribute to this success. We also aim to develop new indicators in order to measure natural capital economy quantitatively. Based on these achievements, we would like to clarify policy implications which may contribute to the policy making process. Partner Sustainable Investor Co., Ltd.
