4 Speakers John Welshons, M.A., is a highly respected contemporary spiritual teacher who lectures and leads meditation courses throughout North America. A practitioner of vipassana (mindfulness) meditation and various forms of yoga for more than 40 years, he is also the author of three critically acclaimed books: One Soul, One Love, One Heart; Awakening from Grief; and When Prayers Aren t Answered. John holds a bachelor of arts degree in Comparative Religions from the University of South Florida and a master of arts degree in History of Religions from Florida State University. Title: Cultivating a Heart of Compassion for Patients and Their Caregivers Description Participants will learn how to assist patients and their caregivers with structuring a more balanced and healing lifestyle for themselves that allows regular opportunities to focus on improved diet, exercise, meditation and contemplative practices to recharge for the very challenging healing work in which they are engaged. Objectives for the workshop will include: Explain how to communicate more effectively with patients Describe techniques to deal with difficult behaviors, anger, and depression Recognize and respond to the spiritual challenges of illness and injury

5 Speakers Rev. Dr. Charles R. Millikan, is the Vice-President for Spiritual Care and Values Integration for Houston Methodist. Dr. Millikan is a graduate of Southwestern University (TX) with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy in 1968; The Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University with a Masters of Theology degree in 1971; and Drew University with a Doctorate of Ministry degree in Honors awarded include Dr. Millikan s being named the Distinguished Alumnus for Southern Methodist University s Perkins School of Theology in Title: Spirtuality, Bioethics and Nursing Description Participants will focus primarily on spirituality, bioethics, and nursing. In recent years there has been a call for a more intentional means of involving the medical and clinical team in serving the patient s spiritual needs. This session will provide definitions of moral distress and moral residue in nursing, which will include current research as well as outlining definitional inconsistencies and problems that result. A discussion will follow regarding the challenges in developing and implementing instruments, approaches and interventions designed to identify and mitigate moral distress. Two cases, one involving conscientious objection, and another involving medical futility, will be presented and what nurses might expect in mitigating the moral distress that may follow.

6 Emma Josephine Loffelholz McMorris RN Spirituality Award Criteria Spirituality Demonstrates an awareness of the value spirituality plays in healthcare Compassion Demonstrates empathy and compassion for all patients and caregivers Communication Demonstrates the ability to communicate the value of spirituality, beliefs, and faith practices to their patients Commitment Devotes self to caring for the body, mind and spirit of their patients. Emma Josephine Loeffelholz McMorris lived a vibrant life for 35 years, but the advances in early detection of breast cancer were not available in 1958 when she passed away one month after diagnosis. As a young woman, Emma was a bright scholar, a tennis player and loved the Opera, performing in her high school Operetta in She was a 1943 graduate of the school of nursing at St. Anthony s Hospital, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and served as a member of the Oklahoma Nurses Association and a member of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. With the call for nurses during World War II, Emma willingly contributed her skills by joining and serving as an Ensign in the Navy Nurses Corps in the Naval hospital at San Diego, California from November, 1944 to January, While there, caring for the wounded soldiers, she met Marine Sgt. Sheridan Andrew McMorris, whom she married. Emma and Sheridan settled in Boulder, Colorado and she was active in the Altar Society and the Christian Family movement of their church, Sacred Heart of Jesus To their six children and the many other lives she touched, Emma s legacy is an effervescence for life in tandem with a deep devotion for religion, spiritual care and caring for others. Emma s love for God and nursing are intertwined in her daughter, AnneMarie McMorris Wallace s memories. She recalls her mother being the first person to lift her up as a child and pray with her while placing bandages on her tricycle-torn elbows and knees. AnneMarie says, My mother s presence was one of amazing, gentle grace that filled my soul and created lasting sacred moments that began a life-long yearning for God. Ms. Wallace believes her Mother would want to honor the profession of Nursing as it so often is the gentle listening ear that patients turn to as they cope with the processes of illness and healing processes that frequently draw upon the spiritual longings of the soul. Awareness and valuing the spiritual side of a patient s journey will allow nurses to hear expressions of spiritual longings and make referrals for spiritual care, thereby providing more holistic caring moments for patient and healthcare professional alike.
