Paper 4 Writing 45 minutes- max. 20 points Part 1 A short piece of writing of words max. 5 points Students are prompted to write a short message in the form of a note, etc. They are told who they are writing to and why, and should include all the content points. Part 2 A longer piece of continuous writing about 100 words max.15 p. Students are presented with a choice of two questions e.g. a letter of application, a story. Paper 5 SPEAKING max. 20 points minutes per one candidate This paper contains 3 parts. The standard format is one student and two examiners. One examiner acts as both assessor and interlocutor and manages the interaction by asking questions and setting up the tasks. The other acts as an assessor and does not join in the conversation. Part 1- Introduction - max. 5 points The student is asked questions about present circumstances, past experiences and future plans.
2 Part 2 Simulated situations max. 5 points. Using functional language e.g. at the railway station, at the travel agent s, job interview etc.. Part 3 General conversation max.5 points The interlocutor sets up the topic. The student talks about his likes / dislikes, preferences, habits, future job etc. e.g Where would you like to work in future?. KING ARTHUR King Arthur is an important figure in the mythology of Great Britain where he appears as the ideal of kingship both in war and peace. The legends of King Arthur began to appear in the twelfth century, and it is possible that they are based on a Celtic leader in the fifth century or sixth century who defended his country against Saxon invasion. King Arthur was the son of Pendragon, and was born in Tintagel in Cornwall. He was brought up by Merlin, an old Celtic magician, and became king of Britain when he was fifteen. He proved his right to be a king when he managed to pull a sword from a rock. He had to fight many lords, and when, with Merlin s help, he defeated them, he received the magic sword Excalibur from the Lady of the Lake. He married Guinevere and lived in a castle at Camelot. His knights sat at a round table so that they were all equal nobody was sitting at the head of the table. Many of the stories in the legends are about the adventures of the knights, among them Lancelot, Perceval, Gawain, and Galahad. They spent their time hunting wild pigs, having feasts, and singing ballads. They often had to kill dragons and giants. At all times they behaved very correctly, with respect and honour. Arthur went to Rome to fight the emperor, Lucius, and he left his kingdom in the hands of his nephew, Mordred. As he was entering Rome, Arthur learned that Mordred had taken control of the kingdom and had captured Guinevere. He came back to England and defeated his nephew, but in the battle was seriuosly wounded. Arthur told Sir Belvedere, the last surviving knight, to throw Excalibur into the water of a lake. He did this, and the sword was caught by a hand which came out of the water and then took the sword below the surface. Arthur was then taken to the Isle of Avalon to get better. We do not know what happened later but it is believed that Arthur did not die, but lives on and will return when his country needs him. The legend of King Arthur has remained popular into the 21 st century.though Arthurian literature became less popular after the end of the Middle Ages, it experienced a revival during the 19 th century, especially after the publication of Alfred Lord Tennyson s Idylls of the King. The subsequent period saw the creation of hundreds of books, poems and films about King Arthur. Part three Read the text and questions below. For each question, mark the correct letter A, B or C. Bath is a city in South West England most famous for its baths fed by three hot springs. These springs are the only naturally occurring hot springs in the United Kingdom. The waters from the springs were believed to be a cure for many illnesses.
5 Bath contains many fine examples of Georgian architecture and is a World Heritage Site. Oh, you re so lucky living in Bath, it s such a wonderful, lovely, historic place, people say enthusiastically, and all you can think of is the awful parking, the crowds of tourists, the expensive shops, and the terrible traffic. Luckily I don t live in Bath but nearly ten miles away in a village called Limpley Stoke in the Avon Valley. It seems to be normal in the countryside these days for professional people who work in the town to prefer to live in the villages; this makes the housing so expensive that the villagers and agricultural workers have to live in the cheaper accommodation in town, with the result that the farmers commute out to the farm and everyone else commutes in. Certainly, there is nobody in the village who could be called an old-style villager. The people nearest to me include a pilot, an accountant, a British rail manager, a retired teacher - not a single farm worker among them. But I don t think there is anything wrong with that it s just that the nature of villages is changing and there is still strong sense of community here. A lot of this sense of community comes from the Post Office, which is a centre for all the gossip and information. I find out what is going on while I am there, pretending to control my two-year-old son. He enjoys anything he can touch at the lowest level of the shop, which consists mainly of cards saying Congratulations on your 18 th Birthday and a collecting tin for the Save The Children charity, which he always picks up and tries to run away with. Working at home, I tend to wander round the village at times when other people are at the office, which has given me a reputation for being incredibly lazy or unbelievably rich, but I still don t get enough time to look after the garden we bought. As nobody has worked in the garden for two years we need to hire a full-time gardener this year.. 1. What is the author s attitude to Bath? A. He feels fortunate to live there. B.
