North Lewisham Health Needs New Cross Ward Assembly 21st July 2010 Chris Baguma Health Improvement Programme Manager Public Health 1

Why did we do a needs assessment? Our data show that more people were dying before the age of 75 in North Lewisham than elsewhere We wanted to see if we could find out more about this from local people We wanted to be able to do something about the health issues in a planned way, using the resources in the best possible way 2

What we did Looked at the population and deprivation levels Looked at data on death, disease and lifestyles Looked at use of health care and services (GP s and hospitals) Interviewed GPs and other health care professionals Run focus groups with people from the Vietnamese community 3

What we found A projected total ward population of 63,317; New Cross estimate - 15,100 for 2009 There is a high level of mobility within the population GP practices have both demographic and local knowledge of the population that reflects illegal/irregular immigrant people, who are hard to identify. 4

Grove Park Age of population Lewisham average age by ward, years Evelyn New Cross Brockley Telegraph Hill Lewisham Central Rushey Green Ladywell Downham Perry Vale Bellingham Sydenham Forest Hill Blackheath Crofton Park Lee Green Whitefoot Catford South 5 ward name Average age LEWISHAM

Ethnic backgrounds Ethnicity Evelyn & New Cross Wards, 2001 Census Chinese Other Black Ethnic Other African Black White Ethnicity, Lewisham Borough, 2001 Census Caribbean Black Asian Mixed African Black Chinese Other Black Ethnic Other Caribbean Black Asian Mixed White 6

Vietnamese community Vietnamese population is estimated to range between 3,500 to 4,000. Most of this community live in the Deptford and New Cross areas. 7

8 Factors which impact health higher unemployment rates than the rest of Lewisham highest rate of people lacking a formal educational qualification. very large numbers of people living in purposebuilt flats and social housing. highest numbers of lone parent households. Life expectancy at birth for New Cross is 4.5 years less than Lewisham average and 6 below England average

9 Key issues: Views of GPs Multiple morbidity was a common problem Chronic diseases - high rates and numbers of patients with diabetes, hypertension, coronary heart disease Mental health - including children s and teenagers related to domestic violence and abuse among teenagers Childhood obesity, with the need for better services, involving diet and exercise for the whole family

Views of GPs GPs identified the need for better parenting classes and improved support for young and inexperienced mothers. GPs also stated that early engagement following childbirth may lead to long-term improvement in patient/gp relationship GPs identified high levels of learning difficulties and low 'IQ' among their patients, often apparently un assessed. 10

Health of Vietnamese community The Vietnamese population have many features of a newly settled community. Many do not speak fluent English, are unemployed, have low levels of educational achievement and do not access mainstream services. The numbers of Vietnamese residents does not necessarily equate to the level of need. 11

Vietnamese community The men have been significantly affected. In Vietnam they were the main bread winner, but since moving to the UK this role has been lost or reversed. Mental health was identified as a key issue among Vietnamese men and women 12

Lifestyle factors Lifestyle issues; a major concern for GPs. High levels of health problems resulting from unhealthy lifestyles. Highest estimated rates of smoking prevalence in Lewisham Substance misuse - hot spots evidence of illegal drug use has been found on streets Lower participation rates in physical activities in Evelyn and New Cross compared with Lewisham 13

Residents concerns Crime Poverty Youth provision Lack of community spirit Rubbish and fly tipping. 14

What are we trying to achieve? Reduce Health Inequalities Increase life expectancy Reduce premature Cardiovascular disease mortality Reduce premature cancer mortality Improve Mental Health 15

How? (continued) Supporting communities, community development & participatory budgeting for Deptford/New Cross Choose Health funds supporting healthy lifestyle interventions Partnership meetings to ensure work is being carried out and resources are being used well Evaluation of projects so we can learn what works and what doesn t 17

18 What s been achieved? Direct Community funding total since = 263,976. Total of 69 projects funded (some groups more than once) Third round of funding to be implemented in October ( 70,000) NHS health checks - specifically targeted activities for North Lewisham Partnership Stakeholder meetings to monitor implementation and use of resources.

What s been achieved? Consistent improvement in self- perceived health outcomes over the six year period 49% residents felt their own health was good in 2002 compared with 57% in 2008 Smoking prevalence - 10% reduction amongst the NX residents interviewed to 27% in 2008, just slightly above the borough average of 26.8% Increased their consumption of fruit and vegetables 19

What s been achieved? Reduction in early deaths from cardiovascular disease and cancer CVD Improved in both wards with New Cross performing a bit better than Evelyn (2 nd to 6th highest - NDC programme since 2001) Cancer Evelyn greatly improved (from 3 rd highest to Lewisham average) New Cross hasn t done well. 20
