We deliver the equivalent learning experience across all our modes of study, offering a variety of different options, allowing you to gain the qualifications you need in a way that suits you. We will consider both your existing qualifications and relevant experience to map out a study route to suit your career aspirations. Full-time study This is the quickest route and requires full attendance for the duration of the programme. Allows you to gain the knowledge and skills you require within the shortest amount of time. Part-time study If you are looking to continue working during your studies or have other commitments, this option allows you to incorporate studying with other responsibilities. Part-time courses run alongside the full-time programmes and split the same modules across the length of the course. Flexible online study If you are unable to study on campus, we offer an online study mode via Campus Moodle, our virtual learning environment. It is a valuable tool that provides an integrated package of resources and facilities to all of our students via the internet. You will be able to interact with fellow students and tutors through innovative technologies including podcasts, videos, chat and discussion forums. You will be taken through an induction by tutors at the beginning of each programme. Download our guide to online learning at: QUALIFICATIONS EXPLAINED If you don t want to commit to studying a full Masters degree, you can complete single modules and work towards the following exit awards: Bachelor of Science (BSc) Award granted on the completion of modules that accumulate 360 credits and typically takes 3 to 4 years to complete. Postgraduate Certificate (PgCert) Award granted on completion of modules that accumulate to 60 credits. Postgraduate Diploma (PgDip) Award granted on completion of modules that accumulate to 120 credits. If you get a diploma you will have gained 120 of the 180 credits you need for a masters degree. Masters (MSc/MBA) Award granted on completion of modules that accumulate to 180 credits and typically includes a dissertation. This will enable you to consolidate and apply the skills and knowledge gained in your earlier postgraduate study. Doctorate (PhD/PD) Application is normally to MSc/MRes with transfer to a PhD dependent on satisfactory progress around 12 months. 5 CAREER OPTIONS in ACCOUNTING AND FINANCE Knowledge of finance or accounting and the relevant skills which you have developed are useful in a huge range of sectors. Opportunities are widely available within accountancy firms, investment banks, high street banks, insurance companies, building societies, management consultancies and public sector employers. The most prominent graduate recruiters are the very large multinational accountancy firms. They use large-scale recruitment campaigns to attract the most promising graduates. Chartered Accountant Chartered accountants provide trustworthy information about financial records. This might involve financial reporting, taxation, auditing, forensic accounting, corporate finance, business recovery and insolvency, or accounting systems and processes. Generally, they play a strategic role by providing professional advice, aiming to maximise profitability on behalf of their client or employer. They work in many different settings, including public-practice firms, industry and commerce, as well as in the not-for-profit and public sectors. Operational Investment Banker The operations division of an investment bank is often described as the engine room of the organisation. Operations (also known as back office, and sometimes middle office ) provide support to the client-facing departments, such as trading, corporate finance, and corporate banking (which are sometimes known as the front office ). The front office generates business for the bank, and operations ensures that the business is administered in an efficient, controlled, risk-free and timely manner. Financial Advisor Financial advisers provide clients with advice on financial matters, making recommendations on ways to best utilise their money. The role involves advising clients on products and services available, ensuring they are aware of and understand those that best meet their needs, and then securing a sale. Management Accountant A chartered management accountant applies the principles of accounting to provide the financial information necessary for the planning and financial protection of organisations in the public and private sectors. They establish and maintain financial policies and management information systems, as well as liaise with management colleagues on all aspects of finance. The role combines accounting skills with business management skills. Chartered management accountants look to the future (rather than the past, as in auditing). They analyse the performance of a business and advise on how to pre-empt problems, adapt to changing circumstances and improve value. Stockbroker Stockbrokers invest in bond and equity securities and various financial products on behalf of institutional, corporate and private clients. They make recommendations on buying and selling stocks based on their interpretation of financial market information provided by analysts. When providing services for private investors, they are known as private-client stockbrokers, investment managers or wealth managers. Stockbrokers also work within financial institutions such as stockbroking and investment management companies. Corporate Treasurer Corporate treasurers play a vital role in improving and maintaining the financial standing of a wide range of companies. They are often responsible for determining financial strategy and policy, arranging the appropriate funding and managing financial risks in the organisation. Investment Analyst An investment analyst undertakes research to provide ideas and information to fund managers. The analysts provide information which enables fund managers to make decisions relating to the investment portfolios they manage. Pensions Consultant Pensions consultants offer pensions services and solutions to companies and organisations. The creation and development of this career reflects recent changes in pensions legislation and management, with the result that organisations are increasingly using third-party organisations to manage pensions provision to their staff. The role of the pensions consultant will, therefore, continue to develop in importance within the pensions industry. Financial Risk Analyst Financial risk analysts identify and analyse the areas of potential risk threatening the assets, earning capacity or success of organisations in the industrial, commercial or public sector. They are sometimes called risk managers. They have the responsibility of predicting change, forecasting cost to the organisation and predicting future trends. Financial Controller Finance controllers have knowledge of all aspects of a company s finances. For example, the finance controller does job tasks such as preparation of financial statements, budget reports, forecasts, cost analysis reports, profit or loss statements, recommendations for spending or cost cuts, SEC reports, and supervision of other accountants in the company. Also, the finance controller makes certain that the financial books are prepared accurately, that all aspects of the company s finances are properly documented, that any money that is due to the company is collected, and makes sure that any company expenses are paid. The course is a conversion Master s course for graduates who have completed a first degree in any field of study and who now wish to develop a career in accounting. It aims to produce independent thinkers who are able to deal with the complexity of the accounting and finance challenges facing organisations, either domestically or internationally. On completion of the Accounting and Finance degree, graduates will be equipped with the knowledge, skills and independent thinking abilities which are essential for developing a career in the accounting sector, within banking and financial institutions, or in the field of corporate finance. Given the nature of modern business, this MSc may also be useful to graduates seeking to develop a career in general management or management consultancy. It is studied full-time over one year and offers the potential for exemptions from some examination papers of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants ACCA. HOW YOU WILL LEARN In full time mode, you will learn through a combination of lectures, seminars and workshop sessions. These comprise of a mix of group study, discussion, simulation and presentations of findings by teams and individuals. You will work as an individual and also as part of a team on case studies, team activities, presentations and discussions. WHAT YOU WILL STUDY The course is a "conversion" masters which assumes no prior knowledge of accounting or finance. It involves one year of full-time study, over three semesters with study normally commencing in the third week of September. The MSc stage is completed the following September with the submission of a Masters dissertation. The modules provide an important core content developing a range of accounting, financial and quantitative theory and practical skills for application in the general corporate financial environment. New modules in Alternative Investments and Portfolio Investment & Wealth Management are introduced along with the existing modules in MSc Financial Management. The MSc in Financial Management has been accepted into the CFA Institute University Recognition Program. This status is granted to institutions whose degree program incorporates at least 70% of the CFA Program Candidate Body of Knowledge (CBOK), which provide students with a solid grounding in the CBOK and positions them well to sit the CFA exams. This means that our graduates can be confident that they have gained a quality assured, industry standard qualification which is well recognised and respected in today s financial management sector.
