3 SPORTS NUTRITION (PgCert/PgDip/MSc) This new course has been specifically designed to meet the increasing demand for suitably qualified professionals able to meet the needs of individuals for sound, evidence based and impartial nutrition advice within a range of organisations and settings in the sporting environment. This relates to all levels of sports participation, from those competing at the highest levels to those participating in physical activity, sport and exercise for health. The course will provide graduates with the appropriate cognitive, inter-personal and analytical skills necessary to develop and/or enhance their career prospects and to broaden their understanding within the field of nutrition and sports and exercise science.

4 WHAT DOES THE COURSE INVOLVE? The course aims to prepare you for a professional career in Sports Nutrition working within the sporting environment. As a student, you will apply the theoretical constructs of sports nutrition. It is also intended to develop and enhance existing knowledge, understanding and analytical skills of those already employed in the field of sports nutrition. One of the most distinctive features of the course is the use of high fidelity technology to replicate the traditional on campus experience and give you the opportunity to engage with other students to enhance your learning experience. Students will be encouraged to develop their own CPD portfolio of evidence throughout the course and will also be offered the unique opportunity to gain the highly esteemed International Society for the Advancement of Kinanthropometry (ISAK) Level 1 qualification. The course has been designed to offer you a fully flexible learning experience to fit in with your lifestyle. The course is delivered on a part-time blended learning basis. Students will also have the opportunity to attend practical workshops on campus. ACCREDITATION Accreditation with the Nutrition Society currently pending. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Applicants are expected to have a degree/honours degree, plus one year s experience. Applicants who do not have a degree but who do have a professional qualification and a minimum of two years work experience will also be considered. For international students 7 IELTS or its equivalent in TOEFL is required. START DATE January 2009 MODE OF STUDY Part-time distance learning and face to face, compulsory five day attendance will be required for Applied Sports Physiology and Anthropometry and Body Composition Analysis modules. 5 WHAT STRUCTURE OF COURSE OF DOES COURSE COURSE Semester 1 - Year 1 (January) INVOLVE? Nutrition Physical Activity (15) Semester 2 - Year 1 (May) Applied Sports Physiology (15 credits) Principles of Behavioural Change for Physical Anthropometry Body & Composition Analysis Activity and Performance Enhancement (15) (15 credits) The Course has been specifically designed to address the significant global changes that have taken place in health during the last decade. 6 CAREER OPPORTUNITIES The career opportunities have significantly expanded with the global recognition of the key role of nutrition and physical activity for health. The aim to improve nutrition and increase participation in physical activity and sport is now a key driver in Government s agenda. As a result, employment opportunities range within a wide spectrum in the sporting environment, working along elite driven, recreational athletes and those participating in physical activity for health, professional sports clubs, bodies and organisations (i.e. UK Sport, International Olympic Committee, BASES, Nutrition Society etc) as well as the food industry. Students will acquire the transferable skills to work in a multidisciplinary environment along other health professionals expanding their repertoire to work with local authorities, sport and leisure centres, community health projects as well as in teaching and research.
