1 Art History: Photography (GH124) 4 Credit Hours Wter 2015 Course Description: An -depth look at an form that has become trsic to the dissemation of formation and communication as well as the basis for the cematic s. This course will explore from its origs and challenge the students to determe what the criteria are fir the medium. Introduction: This course will survey the development of the of, with a focus on the work of photographers of the 19th, 20th & 21st Centuries. Through readgs, the study of photo reproductions, a field trip, and "hands on" photo projects, we will explore the dynamic growth of this important modern form, and its fluence on our vision of the world. Course Learng Outcomes (CLOs): As a result of takg this course you will have the : 1. Differentiate and identify the, styles and ists the throughout its history d through a mid-term and fal exam prepared for by quizzes throughout the course. 2. Demonstrate on the world and its relation to filmmakg through classroom readgs and discussions. 3. Synthesize and terpret through takehome essay questions the midterm and fal as well as origal research papers. 4. Demonstrate thkg and sight evaluatg through a series of written exercises response to viewg images of masterpieces. 5. Articulate through a combation of the methods described above and hand-outs at each session. 6. Analyze and both written and oral, through presentation to the class of research work and written classroom exercises 7. Demonstrate styles through the ages with an expanded achieved through a photo project and classroom exercises.

This research may be one large project (approx 10 pages/2500 words) or broken up to a maximum of three papers (3-4 pages ea.) The format may be classic research papers (typewritten with citations) or power pot/slide shows with narrative. Check with the structor for approval if you go outside the Suggested List of Topics. Any of these projects may be presented at any time durg the quer cludg the last day of class but earlier presentation coordated with lectures is encouraged. Projects handed after the last class will be considered late and graded accordgly. 2. Take-Home Essays Both the mid-term and fal will have a take home essay component which will be due one week from when the essay assignment is given. (Due Week 7 and week 12.) Gradg Criteria: 1. Research projects/presentations 30% 2. Picipation classroom exercises and discussions 25% 3. Mid-term 15% 4. Fal Exam 30% Total: 100%

4 = C = C = C = D = D = D- Below a 60 = Attendance Policy: A third absence for the quer this class will result receivg an F grade for the course. Three tardies equal one absence. CLASS ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS (As published the Scholastic Catalog) Attendance is to learng, academic success, and support for other students picularly durg production shoots. Regular and prompt attendance at all Columbia College Hollywood classes is required. Instructors are not obligated to assign extra work or prepare additional examations for classes missed. Class attendance policies are determed by each structor and must be cluded the course syllabus distributed the first class session. The College recommends as a policy that students who are absent 20% of the course will be failed. What constitutes an excused absence is a matter between the student and structor although The College expects leniency for documented illness and hospitalization, bereavement, personal emergency, military service, and observance of a religious holiday. Students who do not attend the first two class meetgs of a course which they are registered may be admistratively dropped. If a student wishes to contest the structor s application of the attendance policy he/she may petition the Dean of the College. The Dean will conduct an vestigation and respond to the petition as quickly as possible. Students who have filed such a petition may attend class sessions while the matter is under review. Cheatg and Plagiarism: As with any academic stitution, Columbia College Hollywood considers cheatg on exams, assignments, and projects, as well as plagiarism, and knowgly furnishg false formation as unacceptable behavior on the p of a student. This behavior is punished severely. Refer to your Scholastic Catalog for the CCH Policy on Academic Honesty. Cheatg is defed as the act of obtag or attemptg to obta or aidg another to obta academic credit for work by use of any dishonest, deceptive, or fraudulent means. Note: Use of a script written for one class or footage shot for one class for academic credit another class is considered cheatg unless you receive approval for such use from your structor.

To avoid plagiarism, be sure to reference with source any words or materials you take from the published or otherwise dissemated work of another person or persons. If you are unschooled or confused about how to source your work, the Librarian is available to answer your questions. Applied Hours: In order to fulfill the requirements of this course, a student should expect to spend two hours for every credit hour or eight hours per week outside of classroom time engaged readg and homework assignments. This will clude research on websites and books the CCH and/or public libraries. Viewg relevant films and documentaries as well as visits to local galleries and museums addition to the class field trip are encouraged. It is understood that 8 hours per week is an average amount which will likely be more weighted to the later weeks of the quer.
