1 Video Game Design: Part 2: Execution (M301) 4 Credit Hours Spring 2015 Course Description: In M300 the students accomplished preproduction for a game demo. In M301, students will being executing the concept they developed using Unity 3D software, a growing multi-platform game engine that allows video games to be developed on either Mac or PC environments and deployed on a host of media outlets including mobile devices. The course is presented through lectures and labs. Course Learning Outcomes: At the end of taking this course you will be able to: 1. Model and texture 3D assets. 2. Develop and implement game features using simple scripts. 3. Design, create, and implement an interactive user interface. 4. Design, create, and implement effects. 5. Create a prototype Applied Hours: In order to fulfill the requirements of this course, a student should expect to spend two hours for every credit hour or eight hours per week outside of classroom time engaged in class preparation and assignments. The student is expected to be experiencing video games and bringing questions and critiques to class discussion. Attendance Policy: You will be allowed two (2) absences for the quarter in this class. If you reach three absences you will fail the class and be expunged from the class roster. Three tardies count as one absence. In addition, students who miss the first two classes of a course in which they are registered may be administratively dropped. In keeping with CCH Policy (as published in the Scholastic Catalog and listed below), attendance will be taken at the outset of each class session.

2 2 CLASS ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS (as published in the Scholastic Catalog) Attendance is critical to learning, academic success, and support for other students particularly during production shoots. Regular and prompt attendance at all Columbia College Hollywood classes is required. Instructors are not obligated to assign extra work or prepare additional examinations for classes missed. Class attendance policies are determined by each instructor and must be included in the course syllabus distributed the first class session. The College recommends as a minimal policy that students who are absent 20% of the course will be failed. What constitutes an excused absence is a matter between the student and instructor although The College expects leniency for documented illness and hospitalization, bereavement, personal emergency, military service, and observance of a religious holiday. Students who do not attend the first two class meetings of a course in which they are registered may be administratively dropped. If a student wishes to contest the instructor s application of the attendance policy he/she may petition the Dean of the College. The Dean will conduct an investigation and respond to the petition as quickly as possible. Students who have filed such a petition may attend class sessions while the matter is under review. Grading: In keeping with CCH policy, grading is designated as follows: = A = A = B = B = B = C = C = C = D = D = D- Below a 60 = F

3 3 Definitions of Letter Grades: A: Performance of the student is at the highest level and demonstrates full and uncompromised commitment and effort. B: Performance of the student is at a high level and demonstrates consistent and effective achievement in meeting course requirements. C: Performance by the student has been adequate to meet the basic requirements of the course. D: Performance by the student has been sub-par to basic requirements, though meets minimum standards. F: Performance of the student has been such that the minimum course requirements have not been met. Academic Honesty: As with any academic institution, Columbia College Hollywood considers cheating on exams, assignments, and projects, as well as plagiarism, and knowingly furnishing false information as unacceptable behavior on the part of a student. This behavior is punished severely. Cheating, plagiarism and knowingly furnishing false information are defined by established academic standards in widespread use. All students, as part of the admission process, will read and sign a statement describing the college s policy against cheating and plagiarism. If a student is caught cheating, or, equally importantly, plagiarizing material published in any available source including, but not limited to, print and websites, the punishment is unbending. A student found to be cheating receives and F ad no possible credit for the course in question and may also be expelled for a period of one quarter to one year. All plagiarism is punished by expulsion for not less than one year. Following the period of expulsion, the student must petition to be re-admitted. The petition must be addressed to the Dean of the College and must, in the student s own words, describe why the student did it and what and how the student now understands this is unacceptable, dishonest behavior and will not be repeated. Any repetition of any dishonest behavior will result in the immediate and permanent expulsion of the student. If the offense is discovered after the student has completed all course work towards graduation, but before an actual graduation ceremony, the student will be denied the right to be graduated. If the offense is discovered after the student has been graduated, the student s diploma shall be voided. All such expulsions or other punishments will be described, permanently, in the student s Columbia College record and transcripts.

4 4 Plagiarism comes from the Latin word for to kidnap. It means you are stealing someone else s words, thoughts, and/or conclusions. To avoid plagiarism, be sure to reference with source any words or materials you take from the published or otherwise disseminated work of another person or persons. If you are unschooled in or confused about how to source your work, the Librarian is available to answer your questions. Electronic Devices: The use of mobile devices (cell phones, etc.) will not be tolerated during class time. No Phone Calls Allowed! No Text Messaging Allowed! No ing Allowed! The use of laptops for taking notes and referencing source material is allowed, but you are on your honor you are using your laptop for class purposes only. Week-by-Week: Session One: Bringing the project together. Define vision for final product, set production schedule. Intro to Art Direction. Session Two: Intro to Maya. 3D modeling and texturing in Unity. Test: Box test. Session Three: Exporting 3D assets to Unity. Playing with shaders, camera techniques and lighting in Unity. Session Four: Concept out Hero Shot for game. Begin modeling midterm asset. Session Five: Finish Hero Shot. Unity Asset store for rest of environment. Session Six: Midterm: Hero Shot for game is due.

5 5 Session Seven: Execute game features. Simple scripting for game features Session Eight: Creating and implementing a user interface. Session Nine: Using animations, and mechanism in Unity. Intro to effects. Session Ten: Exporting game to mobile Finish final.
