1 Video Game Design: Part 1: Development (M300) 4 Credit Hours Winter 2015 Course Description: Game development has become a stard part of the entertainment industry both originals the components of feature films other entities. This first part of a two-part course demonstrates how to create develop a video idea concept, mechanics, the wrapper. Adobe Photoshop will be used for this class. Course Learning Outcomes: After successfully completing this course you will be able to: 1. Develop a viable 2. Analyze s for their structure content. 3. Write an design 4. Properly pitch a. 5. NY: John Wiley & Sons, 2014 Applied Hours: In order to fulfill the requirements of this course, a student should expect to spend two hours for every credit hour or eight hours per week outside of classroom time engaged in class preparation assignments. The student is expected to be experiencing video s bringing questions critiques to class discussion.

2 Attendance Policy: You will be allowed two (2) absences for the quarter in this class. Any absences or tardies above two absences will result in a failing grade for the class. In addition, students who miss the first two classes of a course in which they are registered may be administratively dropped. Each missed class counts as a full absence. Three tardies count as one absence. In keeping with CCH Policy (as published in the Scholastic Catalog listed below), attendance will be taken at the outset of each class session. CLASS ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS (as published in the Scholastic Catalog) Attendance is critical to learning, academic success, support for other students particularly during production shoots. Regular prompt attendance at all Columbia College Hollywood classes is required. Instructors are not obligated to assign extra work or prepare additional examinations for classes missed. Class attendance policies are determined by each instructor must be included in the course syllabus distributed the first class session. The College recommends as a minimal policy that students who are absent 20% of the course will be failed. What constitutes an excused absence is a matter between the student instructor although The College expects leniency for documented illness hospitalization, bereavement, personal emergency, military service, observance of a religious holiday. Students who do not attend the first two class meetings of a course in which they are registered may be administratively dropped. If a student wishes to contest the instructor s application of the attendance policy he/she may petition the Dean of the College. The Dean will conduct an investigation respond to the petition as quickly as possible. Students who have filed such a petition may attend class sessions while the matter is under review. Grading: In keeping with CCH policy, grading is designated as follows: = A = A = B = B = B = C = C = C-

3 = D = D = D- Below a 60 = F Definitions of Letter Grades: A: Performance of the student is at the highest level demonstrates full uncompromised commitment effort. B: Performance of the student is at a high level demonstrates consistent effective achievement in meeting course requirements. C: Performance by the student has been adequate to meet the basic requirements of the course. D: Performance by the student has been sub-par to basic requirements, though meets minimum stards. F: Performance of the student has been such that the minimum course requirements have not been met. Academic Honesty: As with any academic institution, Columbia College Hollywood considers cheating on exams, assignments, projects, as well as plagiarism, knowingly furnishing false information as unacceptable behavior on the part of a student. This behavior is punished severely. Cheating, plagiarism knowingly furnishing false information are defined by established academic stards in widespread use. All students, as part of the admission process, will read sign a statement describing the college s policy against cheating plagiarism. If a student is caught cheating, or, equally importantly, plagiarizing material published in any available source including, but not limited to, print websites, the punishment is unbending. A student found to be cheating receives F ad no possible credit for the course in question may also be expelled for a period of one quarter to one year. All plagiarism is punished by expulsion for not less than one year. Following the period of expulsion, the student must petition to be re-admitted. The petition must be addressed to the Dean of the College must, in the student s own words, describe why the student did it what how the student now understs this is unacceptable, dishonest behavior will not be repeated. Any repetition of any dishonest behavior will result in the immediate permanent expulsion of the student.

4 If the offense is discovered after the student has completed all course work towards graduation, but before an actual graduation ceremony, the student will be denied the right to be graduated. If the offense is discovered after the student has been graduated, the student s diploma shall be voided. All such expulsions or other punishments will be described, permanently, in the student s Columbia College record transcripts. Plagiarism comes from the Latin word for to kidnap. It means you are stealing someone else s words, thoughts, /or conclusions. To avoid plagiarism, be sure to reference with source any words or materials you take from the published or otherwise disseminated work of another person or persons. If you are unschooled in or confused about how to source your work, the Librarian is available to answer your questions. Electronic Devices: The use of mobile devices (cell phones, etc.) will not be tolerated during class time. No Phone Calls Allowed! No Text Messaging Allowed! No ing Allowed! The use of laptops for taking notes referencing source material is allowed, but you are on your honor you are using your laptop for class purposes only. WEEK-BY-WEEK NOTE: Due to Martin Luther King Day Presidents Day, two class sessions will be held at alternative times To Be Determined. Session One: Intro to the video industry. Learn what goes into developing a video how it matters in modern multimedia. Learn what the class expectations are. Board card ideation. Lecture: Wrappers Mechanics Session Two: Intro to Photoshop for design document pitch document creation. In Class Assignment: Game Asset break down. Session Three: Learn how to pitch a. Start putting a pitch document together. Start work on board or card. Lecture: How to resonate with an audience. In Class Assignment: Pitch board/card.

5 Session Four: Learn how to create a design document for a board or card. Start work on design document for a board or card. Lecture: What Makes Something Fun. Session Five: Start development on board/card. Lecture: Build what you re passionate about. In Class Assignment: Board/Card Game Design Document analysis Session Six: Work on Board or Card. Test, design conceptualize board. Lecture: How to create surprise in your product. Session Seven: Board/Card due. Gameplay testing. In Class Assignment: Gameplay analysis of everyone s board.
