The main theme of the conference is Pain: Approaches to Predict, Control and Relieve. I feel honored to welcome you to this conference on behalf of the Organizing Committee. During my career as a neurologist and clinical pharmacologist in pharmaceutical development, I have been able to make clinical research contributions to important new pain medications such as gabapentin and pregabalin, that bring pain relief to many patients. While these pharmacological treatments may have shifted the focus from interventional surgery to more conservative treatments, there remains a substantial proportion of patients who do not adequately respond or do not tolerate their medications, with a continued high need for improved therapeutics., to patients and am currently supporting companies to develop drugs with novel mechanisms. We need a multidisciplinary collaboration not just between neurologists, anesthesiologists and other pain specialists, but also between clinicians, academia and industry in order to improve the current treatments and how they are used, develop new drugs with novel mechanisms, with the goal to provide optimal treatment solutions for patients who suffer. During this conference you will be able to exchange ideas and experiences across a variety of topics that cover the latest insights in important aspects of pain management and rehabilitation, optimal use of analgesics and chronic pain medications, other approaches such as physical therapy and surgical interventions, and updates on clinical research with new drugs. There will be special attention to difficult to treat pain syndromes and pain related to cancer, that pose special challenges in clinical practice. We hope that you will enjoy the rich mix of formats ranging from keynote sessions featuring many well-known and thought provoking speakers to intense and highly interactive discussion sessions.
