Hunter Scholarship 2 FPC Montgomery staff member receives recognition 2 L to R: Director Samuels, Mayor McKinzey, Chaplain Brown, Regional Director Marberry, Warden Washington-Adduci, Commissioner Thomas, Judge Coogler On February 13, a Staff Recognition Event was held at FCI Aliceville, Alabama, marking the official opening of the Bureau s newest facility and bringing the total number of institutions to 119. Guest included representatives from U.S. Congressional offices, the Governor s office, several federal agencies, and local organizations. Executive Assistant Laconya Williams opened the program and welcomed guests while a slideshow was presented by Computer Services Manager Maurice Graham. The FCI Aliceville s Honor Guard presented the colors and Supervisory Chaplain John Brown provided the invocation and benediction. Case Manager Rhonda Skinner sang the National Anthem. Remarks were given by distinguished guests that included Director Charles E. Samuels, Jr., Southeast Regional Director Helen J. Marberry, Aliceville Warden Arcola Washington-Adduci, The Honorable L. Scott Coogler, Commissioner Kim T. Thomas, and Mayor William R. McKinzey. Director Samuels, thanked Senator Richard Shelby and Representative Alan Harper for their assistance and thanked the people of Aliceville, Mayor William R. McKinzey and local law enforcement for their support. FCI Dublin UNICOR Call Center helps inmates obtain jobs 3 Staff Serve the Community 3 Staff News 4 Mission of the Bureau of Prisons It is the mission of the Federal Bureau of Prisons to protect society by confining offenders in the controlled environments of prisons and community-based facilities that are safe, humane, cost-efficient, and appropriately secure, and that provide work and other self-improvement opportunities to assist offenders in becoming law-abiding citizens.
2 Monday Morning Highlights Page 2 He welcomed the newly hired staff to the greatest agency in government and thanked the wellseasoned staff for taking on the challenge of activating FCI Aliceville. The Director reminded all staff that their efforts will form the foundation that will continue to serve the institution and the community for many years to come. FCI Mendota received its initial ACA accreditation at the Winter Conference in Houston, Texas. Twentythree BOP institutions also received reaccreditations. Additionally, during the week-long conference, BOP staff provided workshops on a wide variety of specialty topics to include PREA, medical, dental care, affirmative action, and reentry. On February 6, Colonel Trent Edwards, 42nd Air Base Wing Commander, recognized Douglas Diller, FPC Montgomery Maintenance Worker Supervisor, for his instrumental role in the design and completion of a Prisoner of War/Missing in Action (POW/MIA) display now located on the grounds of Maxwell Air Force Base. Colonel Edwards presented Mr. Diller with a Commander's Coin, given in recognition of significant achievement and special service. The Association of State Correctional Administrators (ASCA) announced the opening of the application period for the 2013 Susan M. Hunter Scholarship. 3 Monday Morning Highlights Page 3 FCI Dublin UNICOR Call Center helps inmates obtain jobs Over the past 18 months, FCI Dublin's UNICOR Call Center has facilitated the placement of 48 inmates into direct employment upon their release. Dublin's UNICOR Call Center has developed partnerships with two California-based firms, in Oakland and San Diego, to place inmates into telemarketing positions upon release. In addition, they have provided 25 other inmates with active job leads in their release communities. Dublin's UNICOR Call Center works with private sector companies ranging from directory assistance to magazine subscription renewals. Inmates receive 40 hours of classroom and 16 hours of handson-training before being certified as a full time agent at the Call Center. Staff Serve the Community FCI Ashland FCI Ashland recently donated 224 computers to three local schools. These donations will help enhance the student learning experience. In addition, the teachers and staff will be able to use the computers to track program information, complete lesson plans, and complete professional development activities.
