1 Guidelines for Design of Flyers and Posters Flyers and posters are used to announce an event, meeting, or program; to market or promote a product or service; to sway opinion or belief; or to entertain. When designing either a flyer of a poster, you should first identify the purpose of your end product. The second step is to identify the potential audience for your product kids, young adults, families, members of identifiable groups or organizations, etc. This will affect the size, design, text or information, and eventual placement or display of your product. Since other people or groups will be competing with you for the attention of your audience, you should check out the competition to see what is being used. To be effective, your flyer or poster must attract attention it should scream Read Me! to the people who glance at it. Many people will only read the main points as they are passing, so the message must be delivered quickly. Eye-catching devices include color, graphic images, and bold titles. If you can capture the interest of the potential audience, they may stop to read the fine print which gives additional detail. Several design elements are involved: color, lettering, balance, and unity. Of these, color is a major eye-catching device, but printing of flyers in color is more expensive than black and white printing. For that reason, printing in black and white on colored paper is used as a less-expensive compromise, especially with flyers. Numerous fonts are available for lettering used on flyers. Your selection should be simple and appropriate. Uniformity is also important switching between font faces does not necessarily make a flyer or poster better, just more complicated. Variations in size or using bold or underlining can introduce an adequate degree of diversity. Be careful of using script type fonts which may look good on the computer screen but which may be almost unreadable on the printed flyer or poster. Important information should be in a larger font or bold or both. Graphics, when used, should illustrate some aspect of the design. They must be clear and eye-catching as well. Reproducing a detailed color photograph in black and white on a flyer or poster is seldom a good idea. If there is no contrast in the details, then it becomes just a blob on the page. Word s WordArt and WordPerfect s Text Art are graphic fonts which can be used to enhance the poster or flyer. Good design also involves balance or symmetry which can be used to guide the flow of the reader s attention. Try rearranging different elements on your flyer or poster to create a good, unified balance. There are a few things to avoid such as splitting a line of text with a graphic, or switching from horizontal to vertical lines of text.
