4 Athletic Administration Athletic Director Barry Alvarez Barry Alvarez is in his eighth year as Director of Athletics at the University of Wisconsin and fifth without the additional title of head football coach. Alvarez served as A.D. and football coach from Wisconsin has enjoyed remarkable success during Alvarez s tenure at the head of the athletic department, winning a combined 13 team national titles and 29 conference regular-season or tournament crowns since he took over. In Alvarez s six previous seasons as A.D., Wisconsin has finished at least 22nd in the NACDA Director s Cup five times, including a 16th-place finish in That is the second-best finish in school history. Six different teams have won national titles during Alvarez s tenure, including four in the magical season. Nine different teams have been crowned as conference champions, including five in each of the , and seasons. On the academic side, more than 1,000 student-athletes have earned Academic All-Big Ten honors in the last six years. In each of the last two seasons, UW s student-athletes have achieved at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA. And in , nine sports either set or tied their highest team grade-point averages for either the fall or spring terms and four had the highest on record for the year. Alvarez was appointed in the spring of 2008 as one of the chairs of the NCAA s Football Academic Enhancement Group, which was formed to review and recommend improvements for the APR rating. He also serves on the NCAA Football Issues Committee. In addition, Alvarez was named Person of the Year by the Big Ten Club of Southern California in Alvarez was voted into the state of Wisconsin Athletic Hall of Fame and the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame in 2009 and was inducted into the UW Athletics Hall of Fame in Recently elected to the College Football Hall of Fame, Alvarez guided Wisconsin s football fortunes for 16 seasons ( ). He has been at the forefront of the revival of the Badger athletic program during his entire tenure in Madison. He piloted Wisconsin to three Big Ten and Rose Bowl titles (including back-to-back in ) en route to becoming the winningest football coach in school history ( record). Alvarez was just the 10th coach in Big Ten history to win 100 games at one conference institution. His 8-3 (.727) record in bowl games with the Badgers is the best in college football history (among coaches with at least 11 bowl appearances). The 1993 national coach of the year, he was a two-time (1993 and 1998) Big Ten coach of the year and a finalist for ESPN s coach of the decade (1990s) honor. He received the Victor Award s 1999 National Coach of the Year accolade and was the 2004 AFCA Region 3 Coach of the Year. Alvarez is a 1969 graduate of the University of Nebraska, where he played linebacker and went on to earn his master s degree. He received a Distinguished Alumnus Award from his alma mater in Alvarez and his wife, Cindy, were co-campaign chairs in the effort to bring a Gilda s Club (a free support center for families dealing with cancer) to Madison. That facility opened in the fall of In addition, Alvarez serves on the Board of Directors of the MACC Fund (Midwest Athletes Against Childhood Cancer). Alvarez and his wife, Cindy, are the parents of three grown children - daughters Dawn and Stacy and son Chad (wife Stephanie). Barry and Cindy are grandparents to Joe and Jake Ferguson; Grace and Jackson Delzer; and Scarlett and Barry John Thomas Alvarez. 4 Deputy AD Sean Frazier Sean Frazier is in his fifth year at UW and first as the deputy athletic director. The department s chief of staff, Frazier serves as the sport administrator for men s basketball as well as men s and women s hockey. He also oversees strategic planning and serves as the liaison to the Chancellor s office, the Recreational Sports Board and the Dean s Leadership Council. In addition, Frazier oversees facilities, food & beverage and event management. Frazier has also served as Director of Athletics and Recreation at Clarkson University and at Manhattanville College. In addition, he has been assistant director of athletics at the University of Maine. Frazier has a long term relationship with college hockey, having served in key leadership positions in the ECAC Hockey League, Hockey East Association, and in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA). Frazier is also serving a four year appointment on the NCAA Division I Men s Ice Hockey Championship Committee. In August, Frazier was named chair of the Div. I Men s Ice Hockey Committee for the season. As an administrator Frazier is credited with supporting three NCAA hockey national championships, one with the men s hockey program at the University of Maine and two with the women s hockey program at the University of Wisconsin. Frazier serves on the Executive Board of the Minority Opportunities Athletic Association (MOAA) and is a guest lecturer and Executive Mentor for the NCAA Fellows Leadership Development Program. Frazier is a native of Long Island, N.Y., and earned his bachelor s degree in communications from the University of Alabama and master s degree in higher education leadership from the University of Maine. He played football for Alabama from ( ) and was a part of a Southeastern Conference Championship team in Frazier and his wife, Rosa, have three children two daughters, Marina and Marcella and a son Maximo.

6 Head Coach Mike Eaves After a playing career that ended with the most prolific scoring numbers in Wisconsin hockey history and an NCAA title, Mike Eaves returned to his alma mater for the season as the fifth coach in the modern era of Badger hockey. Now through nine years behind the bench, Eaves has added to his legacy, bringing the program s sixth NCAA title to Madison in He also led the program to within one game of a second NCAA title in Firmly entrenched as one of the most respected coaches in college hockey, Eaves led the Badgers to their to their fifth top-three WCHA finish in seven years during the season. The second-place finish was just a warm-up, as the Badger reached the 2010 NCAA championship game at Ford Field in Detroit after advancing through the NCAA West Regional. Along the way, a Wisconsin player took home the program s first Hobey Baker Memorial Award, while two players were named All-Americans and six earned all-league accolades. The Badgers also played in front of 55,031 in a 3-2 victory over Michigan outdoors in the Culver s Camp Randall Hockey Classic, then another 34,954 and 37,592 fans at the Frozen Four. In , Eaves reached his first coaching milestone, notching his 100th victory behind the Badger bench with a victory over Alaska Anchorage at the Kohl Center on Feb. 9. He also oversaw the program s 1000th victory of Wisconsin Hockey s modern era (since 1963) with a win over Minnesota. Eaves tenure thus far is highlighted by the dream season. Finishing with a mark, the squad defeated Boston College, 2-1, at the Bradley Center in Milwaukee for the storied program s first title in 16 years. Along the way, Wisconsin swept Michigan State and Michigan at the College Hockey Showcase, played in front of nearly 41,000 fans outside at Lambeau Field, reached the NCAA Frozen Four after a 1-0 triple overtime win over Cornell at the Resch Center in Green Bay, Wis., and set numerous school records. Individual honors were plenty, as well, with a Hobey Baker finalist and three All-Americans. Eaves and the Badgers reached their high-water mark after a four-year process. In just his second season behind the bench, Eaves led his charges to one of the largest improvements in college hockey and to within one goal of an NCAA Frozen Four appearance. Included in the run was a national-best 15-game unbeaten streak, a third-place finish in the WCHA standings and national rankings as high as No. 3. The Badgers continued their improvement in by qualifying for their first WCHA Final Five under Eaves, spending a league-best 10 weeks in first place in the WCHA standings and leading the conference in defense and penalty killing, while upping their goal average by a half goal per game. Eaves returned to the UW after spending two seasons as the head coach of Hockey s National Team Development Program (NTDP). A program designed to accelerate the development of elite under-20 American hockey players, Eaves led the group to a gold medal at the 2002 IIHF World Under- 18 Championship in Piestany, Slovakia, the firstever gold medal for the United States at the event. Eaves and his team clinched the gold with a 3-1 victory over Russia to end the tourney with a record. Excluding the Olympics, it was the first gold medal won by a U.S. national team at an IIHF World Championship since Eaves encore performance came when he directed the U.S. National Junior Team at the 2004 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship to the country s first world junior gold medal. Eaves coaching days began in 1985 with the Calgary Flames (assistant) and since then he has held assistant coaching positions with the NHL s Pittsburgh Penguins and Philadelphia Flyers, and head coaching posts with the Helsinki Finnish Elite League, Shattuck (Minn.) St. Mary s High School and the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League (AHL). He also spent one season at St. Cloud State (assistant coach) and one season at UW-Eau Claire (head coach). Eaves has represented the U.S. in international competition both as a player and coach. He skated as a forward for Team at both the 1981 and 1984 Canada Cup tournaments and was a member of the 1976 and 1978 U.S. National Teams at the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Championships. As a coach, Eaves served as an Eaves at Wisconsin assistant under Bob Johnson for Team at the 1991 Canada Cup, was an assistant coach for the 1991 U.S. National Team at the IIHF World Championship in Finland and directed the 2006 U.S. National Team at the IIHF World Championship in Latvia. Eaves was recruited to play at Wisconsin by the legendary Badger Bob Johnson. He became both a standout student-athlete and one of the greatest players in Badger hockey history ( ). A first-team All-American as a junior and senior, Eaves is the UW s career scoring leader with 267 points (94-173) in 160 games. He helped lead the Badgers to the 1977 NCAA title by scoring 28 goals and 53 assists for 81 points during that championship season. He assisted on three goals in the championship game, including the game winner just 23 seconds into overtime, a 6-5 win over Michigan. Hockey and coaching were two things Eaves grew up around. His father, Cecil, won an NCAA title at the University of Denver ( ) and is also credited with helping to start the hockey program at Ohio State. Cecil was the head coach at the University of Windsor (Ontario) and is a past director of the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association (CAHA). His brother Murray lettered two years at Michigan ( ) before playing for the Winnipeg Jets ( ) and the Detroit Red Wings ( ). He currently is the head coach at Shattuck St. Mary s High School. A native of Denver, Colo., Mike and his wife, Beth, are the parents of two sons Ben and Patrick. Ben captained the Boston College hockey team in , while Patrick spent three years with the Eagles before joining the NHL s Ottawa Senators. He now skates for the Detroit Red Wings. Ben became the third member of the Eaves family to win a national title when Boston College won the 2001 NCAA Championship. Eaves graduated with honors from Wisconsin in 1978 with a bachelor s degree in physical education. Year Record Pct. 8 Assistant Coaches Bill Butters Assistant Coach Bill Butters enters his second year as part of UW s staff and continues his history of developing collegiate defensemen from 10 years as an assistant coach at the University of Minnesota. Butters spent those 10 years through as an assistant coach for his alma mater, serving as recruiting coordinator, while also handling team travel, alumni relations and the team s defense. He helped the Gophers reach six NCAA Frozen Fours, and Minnesota finished in the top three of the WCHA during every season of his tenure. Among the players who played for him at Minnesota are NHL defensemen Doug Zmolek, Chris McAlpine, Lance Pitlick, Mike Crowley, Tom Pederson, Dan Trebil and Todd Richards. Richards is now the head coach of the Minnesota Wild. Following his time with Minnesota, Butters assumed the role of co-head coach at Bethel College through 1998, before taking over as head coach of his former team at White Bear Lake High School until As a player, Butters played three years at Minnesota, where he served as co-captain during the campaign. During his career, he was teammates with current Nebraska-Omaha head coach Dean Blais and played for legendary head coaches Glen Sonmor and Herb Brooks. Butter s professional hockey career began in the CHL with the Oklahoma City Blazers for two seasons. From there, he moved on to the WHA for nearly five seasons. He skated for Minnesota, Houston, Edmonton and New England in the WHA. He reached the pinnacle of his career in , playing 23 games with the NHL s Minnesota North Stars. Butters returned the following season to Minnesota, before finishing his career with the Oklahoma City Stars of the CHL. He spent his final professional season as a player and coach for Oklahoma City, where he was teammates with Mike Eaves. Recently, Butters has worked with Hockey Ministries International, where he has staffed and coached hockey camps. Married to his wife of 38 years, Debbie, Butters has three children, Ben, Anne and Becky, as well as seven grandchildren. Gary Shuchuk Assistant Coach Gary Shuchuk, a former Badger star, returns to the University of Wisconsin as a second-year assistant coach. Shuchuk arrived from his position as executive director of Madison Ice, Inc., where he oversaw the daily operations of Madison Ice Arena and Hartmeyer Ice Arena in Madison. He brings a wide range of coaching experience in the state of Wisconsin. Since 2008, he has served as coach for Team Wisconsin U16 and helped select and develop that and the U18 team. As coach of the U16 team, he has guided the squad to back-to-back Tier I National Championship tournaments. In 2008, Shuchuk took part as a coach in Hockey s Select 17 Player Development Camp. He has seen time volunteering as a coach for Madison West, Memorial and Edgewood high schools and been involved with the Wisconsin Elite Hockey League, including leading the selection of players for the Madison Elite U16 team that was Tier II National Championship runner up in A 1990 First-Team All-American and the 1990 WCHA Player of the Year, Shuchuk was the leading scorer for Wisconsin s 1990 NCAA championship team and an assistant captain for the squad. The team also captured the 1990 WCHA regular-season and playoff titles. He was also awarded the University of Wisconsin Male Athlete of the year award as well. He set Wisconsin s single-season goalscoring record for seniors with 41 that year, while his 80 points that season are second on UW s all-time list for seniors, trailing only Mike Eaves 89 points. Shuchuk collected 85 goals and 176 points in 177 career games for Wisconsin from The Edmonton, Alberta, native arrived in Madison from the AJHL, where he played his junior hockey for the St. Albert Saints. He was league rookie of the year and team MVP during his two years with the Saints. Following his Badger career, Shuchuk played parts of five seasons in the NHL between 1990 and 1996, including part of one season with the Detroit Red Wings and four seasons with the Los Angeles Kings. His stint with the Kings included the team s 1993 run to the Stanley Cup Finals. During the Stanley Cup playoffs, Shuchuk scored the game winning goal for the Kings in double overtime of game 5 of the 1993 Smythe Division finals against the Vancouver Canucks. He also spent time in the AHL, winning the Calder Cup with the Adirondack Red Wings 8 in 1992 and earning team MVP honors in 2004 with the Springfield Falcons, while also serving as one of the team s assistant coaches. During his professional playing career, Shuchuk co-captained three different teams, including the Orlando Solar Bears and the Houston Aeros of the IHL and the AHL s Adirondack Red Wings. Shuchuk also spent time playing professionally in the German Elite League, as well as in Austria and Switzerland. In the season while playing in the German Elite League, Shuchuk helped Krefeld Penguins capture their first DEL Championship. Shuchuk and his wife, Michelle, were married in the summer of The couple resides in Madison with their son, Alex,and their two daughters, Mikaila and Katarina. Jeff Sanger Volunteer Assistant Coach Sanger serves in his third year of duty as the team s volunteer assistant coach, working primarily with Wisconsin s goaltenders. A Madison, Wis., native, Sanger is a former standout goaltender at Colorado College. CC s all-time leader with 76 victories and 16 shutouts, his seven shutouts as a senior in also paces Tiger goaltenders. Sanger s career goals-against average of 2.48 stood as an all-time best for CC until two-time All-American Curtis McElhinney graduated with a 2.32 goalsagainst average ( ). Following his college career, Sanger played parts of three years of professional hockey at the AHL, ECHL, CHL and UHL level. A 1997 graduate of Madison Edgewood High School, Sanger posted a record during his four-year prep career and helped his team win three consecutive Wisconsin Private School state championships. Sanger has connections to the UW in sister Angie, a former UW volleyball player and his father, Art, who played football for the Badgers. Sanger also enjoyed a stint with the Wisconsin women s hockey program as a volunteer assistant during the program s backto-back NCAA championship runs in and Jim Snider Strength and Conditioning Jim Snider is in his second stint at Wisconsin, this time working with the UW hockey programs and men s tennis and serving as the athletic department representative on the Sports Nutrition Panel. Previously, Snider spent three seasons at Wisconsin as assistant strength

9 and conditioning coach after serving a year-long internship with the department. His primary responsibilities were men s and women s soccer, tennis and crew, while also assisting with football. Snider spent his year before rejoining the Badgers as assistant director of Strength and Conditioning at the University of Minnesota. At Minnesota, Snider was responsible for the administration and development of athletic enhancement programs for men s basketball, men s hockey, baseball and track and field, while managing full-time and intern personnel. Snider originally came to Wisconsin for his internship from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse were he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise and Sport Science with an emphasis in Strength and Conditioning and also a degree in Sports Management in While at the University of Wisconsin La Crosse, Snider worked for three years with football, basketball, baseball, women s soccer, men s tennis and gymnastics. Snider is a member of several organizations including the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association (CSCC) and Weightlifting. He is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist through the NSCA, Level II Senior Coach through Weightlifting, and also a certified and active referee through Weightlifting. Snider is married to his wife, Jenna, and resides in McFarland, Wis. 9

10 Support Staff Andy Hrodey Athletic Trainer Andy Hrodey is in his 13th season handling athletic training duties for the UW hockey team after being hired as a full-time staff member for the Badger athletic training staff in He returned to Wisconsin from the United States Military Academy where he served as a full-time athletic trainer for both the hockey and football teams. Previously at the UW, Hrodey was a graduate assistant during the and seasons, working as a team trainer for both the UW football and wrestling programs. A native of Sheldon, Ill., Hrodey attended the University of Illinois and worked as a student athletic trainer with the football, men s basketball, women s swimming and wrestling programs. Hrodey is a member of the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) and received his bachelor s degree from Illinois (1996) and his master s degree from Wisconsin (1998). He is a licensed Athletic Trainer. A Monona, Wis., resident, Hrodey and his wife, Liz, have a son, A.J., and daughter, Allie. Nate LaPoint Equipment Manager An Eau Claire, Wis., native, LaPoint is in his third year with the Badgers after spending the previous four years as an assistant equipment manager with the University of North Dakota men s hockey program. While at North Dakota, he performed the regular duties of an equipment manager, such as skate sharpening, equipment inventory and purchasing of equipment, while also helping with the program s video needs on road trips. In addition to his duties at North Dakota, LaPoint spent seven months at Gerrell s Sports Center in Grand Forks, where he repaired and sharpened skates and served as a general salesman for sporting goods. He has also spent each summer since 2000 as a coach, referee and counselor for Top Dog Hockey Camps. LaPoint graduated in 2009 from North Dakota with a degree in general studies and a minor in meteorology. Prior to his time at North Dakota, he attended Northland College in Ashland, Wis., for two years, where he competed as a member of the NCAA Division III program s hockey team. Zach Remiker Director of Hockey Operations / Video Coordinator Zach Remiker is in his ninth year with the men s hockey program as video coordinator and his first as the program s director of hockey operations. Before assisting the hockey program, Remiker spent the prior three years as a student assistant in Wisconsin s video services. Remiker spent most of his time as a student assistant helping video for the UW football program, but also served the Badger track and field program and the swimming program, with their video needs. A 2003 graduate of Wisconsin with a bachelor of arts degree in marketing, management and human resources, Remiker spent five years working for the athletic department in the mail room. He also worked four years on weekend security at Camp Randall Stadium and three years in concessions for hockey and basketball at the Kohl Center. Remiker s video duties include creating highlight films, taping games, assisting coaches with film breakdowns, creating teaching tapes and helping with media video requests, among other responsibilities. His new duties include arranging travel, among various other assignments. The Two Rivers, Wis., native lives in Madison. Paul Capobianco Athletic Communications Paul Capobianco is in his 13th year with the University of Wisconsin. He currently serves in his ninth season as the contact for men s ice hockey, which includes the team s 2006 NCAA title run. Prior to his time with the men s hockey program, he served the women s hockey program, and spent three years assisting the WCHA with its communications He also spent 11 years as the primary contact for men s and women s open and lightweight crew. A three-year letterwinner and member of Notre Dame s 1994 NCAA championship fencing team, Capobianco graduated the Irish in 1996 with a B.S. in biology. The Selden, N.Y., native spent a year as a volunteer in the sports information office at then-ncaa Division II Stony Brook in Stony Brook, N.Y. He became a graduate assistant for two years at Minnesota State in Mankato, Minn., serving as the primary contact for football and men s and women s basketball, among other sports, prior to his arrival at Wisconsin. Outside of his responsibilities at Wisconsin, Capobianco performed as the Peaks Ice Arena Mixed Zone Supervisor at the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City, Utah. The Peaks was one of the two facilities for ice hockey at the games. He also worked at the E Center for the men s ice hockey medal round and at the opening and closing ceremonies. Capobianco resides in Madison with his wife, Laurie, and their three children, Rose, Colin and Lily. 10
