5 Breakout Session Descriptions Breakout Sessions 1 10:45 12:00pm In-Service Training Page 4 A) Service-Learning to Create Community Danny Summerlin, Hope CommUnity Center This session will highlight the history of Hope's work in Apopka, FL to help frame a discussion about service as a way to create and strengthen community. Participants will explore strategies to connect service to the ethic of community and how immersion trips can be utilized as an effective learning strategy to engage college students. B) Building a Network of VISTAs: Success & Challenges Wendy Moore, University of Miami Butler Center Over the past year, Wendy has worked to develop a network of AmeriCorps VISTAs and supervisors in the city of Miami through the Non-Profit Leadership Series. The overarching goal is to better connect VISTAs within the Miami community and provide professional development opportunities. This session will guide you through a conversation on what Wendy has learned through this process, how it can be grown in future years, and how it can be incorporated in your own city. Breakout Sessions 2 1:00 2:15pm A) College Access ACE (Achieve a College Education) Gianna Cifredo & Charlene Kormondy, University of Central Florida Burnett Honors College ACE (Achieve a College Education) Day is a pre-college early awareness opportunity aimed at incentivizing 500 underserved fifth graders each year to achieve academic success in school and aspire to a college education. The fifth graders not only get to see a college campus and attend academic sessions led by UCF faculty, but they also interact with current UCF students. Our presentation covers the steps necessary to create an event like this, focusing on volunteer recruitment, selecting UCF faculty and participating elementary schools, and the organization involved in orchestrating an event like this. B) X, Y and Z: Understanding the Generations Veronica Hernandez, Stetson University There are currently five living generations with another on the rise. This presentation will cover the characteristics of those generations including communication styles, family life and key historical events. Additionally, Veronica will cover generational theory and how we predict patterns and behaviors in the generations. There will be breakout activities and discussion on how we can utilize this knowledge in our everyday work. Breakout Sessions 3 3:45 5:00pm A) Lighting the Way for College Access & Success Through Civic Engagement & Mentoring Andrea Jenkins & staff, Florida Campus Compact This presentation will examine challenges facing students that often may prevent them from accessing and succeeding in post-secondary education, and the relation between educational attainment/career/life skills and poverty. FL CC s Connect2Complete (C2C) and College Positive Volunteers (CPV) programs are effective program models for engaging students as mentors and Peer Advocates. Participants will be provided with C2C and CPV programming resources that can be utilized within their communities. B) Technology for Non-Profit Organizations & Fun! Danny Summerlin, Hope CommUnity Center During this session you will talk about technology: not just the acronyms, but what tools are out there and how to make the most of them. Bring your technology questions with you!
