1 FALL 2013 VOLUME 29, ISSUE 1 President s Message To the FDEA Membership: It is an honor to serve as your new President during this time of great change in our state. I woke up this morning and, in typical Florida fashion, the temperature was significantly lower from the day before. My body was not prepared for it. Such is the state of developmental education in Florida. I hope that, despite the change in climate, you have found some renewed vigor to implement the best strategies to help your students both in and out of the classroom. Such optimism was on display at the 2013 annual FDEA conference at Miami Dade College: Wolfson Campus, October 31-November 2. This conference reminded me once again that although this generation is more technologically connected than ever before, the best means of networking is still in person. We had 20 state colleges as well as representatives from two state universities. Thank you to all who attended. A wide variety of presentations were given on reading, writing, and, mathematics redesign, lab redesign, a state DOE update, and much more. As your campuses continue to gather information through FDEA and other sources, I encourage you to consider having regional workshops and collaboratives with neighboring institutions. I attended one over the summer, and it was very helpful to all schools who attended. On the other hand, I encourage you to follow the principle of consilience, written about by the Biologist Edward O' Wilson. There is a vast amount of information in this world, and it can seem overwhelming to make sense of it all. However, it is all interconnected, and sometimes it is best to stop researching and start connecting the pieces we currently have. I am excited to see how these pieces come together. Each piece of information is vital, and FDEA and the national body of NADE is here as a collective voice for you, your students, and your collective institutions. I want to thank the FDEA Board for their willingness to serve. They are a strong body, and I am looking forward to working with all of them. I am also here to serve you. Thank you very much for the opportunity to serve as President. Please do not hesitate to let me know your ideas on how FDEA can help. Best, Chris Elder
