Our one and two day practical courses give you the confidence to carry out a range of procedures which you might have otherwise had to refer. Along with leading speakers delivering the most advanced developments and the opportunity to work with like-minded people you will be able to increase the care for your patients and their owners. In addition we have state of the art facilities in Swindon where we have a purpose built wet-lab. Delegates are able to work in pairs across six surgical stations with a wide choice of surgical equipment. This creates a safe and professional environment where you can comfortably develop your skills in the latest surgical techniques without any of the logistical challenges that sometimes accompany practical courses. So what s new? In our next series of courses we are really excited to announce that we have added two new courses - Next Steps Orthopaedics and Advanced Orthopaedics. These courses allow us to provide you with a full range of orthopaedic courses from an Introduction to Orthopaedics, through to Advanced Orthopaedics. Whether you are a new graduate needing to know the basics, or an experienced surgeon wishing to tackle more advanced procedures, we have a course for you. 3 Orthopaedic Surgery Introduction to Orthopaedic Surgery Two-day course Day One: Registration and coffee 9.00am Day Two: Registration and coffee 8.30am Course starts at 9.00am and finishes at 4.30pm plus VAT ( 1, in total) Venue and dates Swindon Tuesday 19th and Wednesday 20th August This two day practical course is designed to provide a solid grounding in how to deal with common orthopaedic problems and build confidence in surgical approaches and techniques. The combination of lectures and practical sessions will revise relevant surgical anatomy to enable delegates to undertake with confidence the surgical management of common articular problems. These will include femoral head and neck arthroplasty, surgery for osteochondrosis, lateral retinacular suture placement for the cruciate deficient stifle, and techniques to correct medial patellar luxation. Basic fracture planning will be described and the correct use of wire, screws and plates will be undertaken. During this time he was responsible for the clinical teaching and referral service of small animal orthopaedic cases, was the author of over 50 peer reviewed papers, wrote numerous chapters and edited several books. John is past Chairman of the British Veterinary Orthopaedic Association, Senior Vice President of AO/Vet International and of the European Association of Veterinary Orthopaedics and Traumatology and a Board Member of the European College of Veterinary Surgery. He is Senior Scrutineer of the BVA/KC Hip and Elbow Dysplasia Schemes. He is Associate Editor (Europe) of the journal Veterinary Surgery. John is Past-President and current Chair of the Board of Regents European College of Veterinary Surgeons. 6 Orthopaedic Surgery TTA Rapid One day practical course In conjunction with Veterinary Instrumentation Veterinary Instrumentation provides veterinary surgical instruments designed or selected especially for veterinary use. Their special interests are veterinary orthopaedics in general and canine cruciate surgery in particular. Yves has been involved in the development of the TTA Rapid technique since its very beginning in 2011 and lectures internationally on the technique. Yves has recently been awarded the position of Assistant Professor at the University of Ghent. TTA Rapid is fully explained, including the technique, the implants and instrumentation, the aftercare, potential complications and how to avoid them. A paper exercise demonstrates calculation of cage size for the correct tibial tuberosity advancement. Dry bone and cadaver exercises follow. The course is designed for those already familiar with stifle surgery and the diagnosis of cranial cruciate ligament disease. Meniscal examination will not be a focus. Previous experience of osteotomy techniques is not required, but is an asset. Morning session: MMP The Modified Maquet Procedure (MMP) is an evolution of the TTA procedure for treatment of lameness due to cranial cruciate failure. The course is in two parts: A lecture based introduction describing the technique, a detailed review of the surgical technique and clinical outcomes. Animations and video support material will be used A practical session using synthetic bone models which delegates can take home and a practical session on a cadaver Afternoon session: RidgeStop RidgeStop is a novel surgical technique for treatment of patellar luxation. A simple, affordable alternative to sulcoplasty surgery that can be used alone, as the sole treatment for patella luxation, or as an adjunct to realignment operations. The course is in two parts: A lecture based overview of the pathogenesis and treatment selection in patella luxation, and a review of current surgical treatment options. After having held academic positions at the Veterinary School in Lyon, France and North Carolina State University, USA, Guillaume joined the University of Bristol in 2011 and is currently Senior Lecturer in Small Animal Soft Tissue Surgery at the School of Veterinary Sciences at Langford. He also serves as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Small Animal Practice and as a member of the Small Animal examination committee of the European College of Veterinary Surgery. On-going advances in oncological surgery, trauma surgery and wound management ensure that the indications for advanced reconstructive surgery in small animal patients continue to increase. Large tumour resections and chronic non-healing wounds leave the surgeon with reconstructive challenges. A range of options can be considered where local skin tension, lack of adjacent skin or close vicinity of important organs precludes primary closure. These options include the use of local skin flaps, distant skin flaps, axial pattern flaps, skin stretching and free skin grafts. She runs ophthalmology referrals from two private referral hospitals in London. In addition to her clinical work Sally regularly lectures to vets and nurses and has written two books on veterinary ophthalmology. A mixture of theory and practical sessions will cover the examination of the patient which presents with an ophthalmic emergency, formulating differential lists and prioritising urgent treatments. Once an accurate diagnosis is made we will review the approach to common ophthalmic emergencies, concentrating on those which are surgically managed, and delegates will have time to practise the procedures discussed. He is head of the imaging section at the University s Department of Small Animal Clinical and Animal Sciences. His responsibilities include the provision of imaging diagnosis at the University s small and large animal hospitals, the ECVDI residency program at Copenhagen and supervision of PhD, masters and undergraduate students. His research interests are focused on quantitative aspects of medical imaging. Sam Jakovljevic DMV MSc DVR DipECVDI MRVCS (Speaking in December in St Albans) Sam graduated from the University of Liège Veterinary School in Belgium. After spending a year in general practice at one of the busiest small animal practices in Brussels, he joined the Department of Surgery and Radiology of the University of Liège Veterinary School in Sam trained in Radiology at the University of Bristol Veterinary School, and spent a further year there doing clinical research, resulting in an MSc thesis investigating double contrast gastrography and gastroscopy. He was subsequently appointed as lecturer at the University of Liverpool for two years. After a few years back at University of Liège Veterinary School, he decided to join the Imaging team of the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences at Purdue University, Indiana USA. Ten years later, he returned to England as a Lecturer and then Senior Lecturer at the Royal Veterinary College. Taking a pause from veterinary imaging, he worked for five years in the patent department of Cook (UK), a branch of an American medical company, before returning to clinical work as a radiologist at Dick White Referrals in January Sam holds the RCVS Diploma in Veterinary Radiology, and is a European Specialist in Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging enquiries@improveinternational.com 11

12 Ultrasound 12 s Abby Caine MA VetMB DipECVDI CertVDI MRCVS (Speaking in November in St Albans) Abby graduated from the university of Cambridge in She spent 5 years in small animal practice, and during this time she developed an interest in Diagnostic Imaging and gained the RCVS imaging certificate. She returned to Cambridge for an imaging residency, and was awarded the European Diploma in Imaging in Since then she has been working at Dick White Referrals near Newmarket as an imaging specialist, and enjoys all aspects of diagnostic imaging for small animals.. Tim Trevail BVetMed CertVDI DipECVDI MRCVS European Veterinary Specialist in Diagnostic Imaging (Speaking in September in Swindon) Tim graduated from the Royal Veterinary College in 2004 and following a short spell in small animal practice in Oxfordshire, undertook a rotating small animal internship at the Animal Health Trust, followed by a diagnostic imaging residency at the University of Glasgow. He has subsequently worked as a clinician teacher in radiology at the University of Liverpool and as a radiologist at Pride Veterinary Centre. He has now moved back to West Country and is the radiologist at Cave Veterinary Specialists. He is a European Veterinary Specialist in Diagnostics. Fintan McEvoy MVB PhD DVR DipECVDI MRCVS (Speaking in Cranage in October) Fintan McEvoy is Professor of Veterinary Imaging at the University of Copenhagen. He is head of the imaging section at the University s Department of Small Animal Clinical and Animal Sciences. His responsibilities include the provision of imaging diagnosis at the University s small and large animal hospitals, the ECVDI residency program at Copenhagen and supervision of PhD, Masters and undergraduate students. It is the ideal follow on course from our two day introductory course. Delegates will review machine set up and will learn how to recognise common artefacts, how to perform a basic Doppler examination and consider the ultrasonographic appearance of various common abnormalities. Case based examples will help participants consolidate their knowledge and the highly practical nature of the course will enable delegates to improve their technique rapidly. Ultrasound guided biopsy and aspiration techniques will be taught. 13 Ultrasound Advanced Abdominal Ultrasonography One-day practical course Registration and coffee 9.00am plus VAT ( in total) Venues and dates St Albans Tuesday 22nd July Swindon Friday 7th November This course is ideal for those veterinary surgeons who are familiar with abdominal ultrasound, use this diagnostic aid regularly in practice and are ready to perform some more challenging examinations. Delegates will be taught various techniques to identify the pancreas, adrenal glands, peritoneum and medial iliac lymph nodes. Participants will have ample opportunity to practise the use of Doppler for examination of larger blood vessels. Case based examples will help participants consolidate their knowledge of the topics covered. Pete completed a veterinary diagnostic imaging residency at the Royal Veterinary College. After completing his residency, Pete worked in first opinion practices and referral hospitals in England and Europe. In 2000, he joined the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences at the Royal Veterinary College and currently he is Senior Lecturer in Radiology. Pete is a European and RCVS Recognised Specialist in Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Pete is a regular author, speaker and CPD tutor on the subjects of small animal radiology, ultrasonography, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. In 2002 she obtained her ACVIM Diploma in Veterinary Cardiology. After returning to UK, Nuala was a Lecturer in Cardiology at the University of Liverpool until 2005, where she ran the clinical cardiology service. She was awarded RCVS specialist status in Cardiology in 2006 and became recognised as a European Specialist in Cardiology in Nuala has lectured both nationally and internationally and published widely in the field. She currently works as a cardiologist in a specialty referral practice in Brighton, UK and at Zurich University Small Animal Veterinary Hospital, Switzerland. Her areas of particular interest are canine dilated cardiomyopathy, heart failure and cardiac arrhythmias. Echocardiography Two-day practical course Day One: Registration and coffee 9.00am Day Two: Registration and coffee 8.30am Course starts at 9.00am and finishes at 4.30pm plus VAT ( 1, in total) Venues and dates St Albans Wednesday 29th and Thursday 30th October Swindon Thursday 18th and Friday 19th December This course aims to train delegates on how to perform a full echocardiographic examination in dogs. This will include right and left sided views for 2D, M mode and Doppler studies. An overview of the changes seen in common acquired and congenital cardiac diseases in the dog and cat will be provided with multiple examples. The common artefacts which may be confused with cardiac pathology will be discussed. On the second day, the theory of Doppler will be introduced and its application in acquired and congenital disease will be discussed and put in practice. The course has a high practical content with plenty of time allocated to the practical sessions and case discussions. Venues and dates Swindon Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th October Day One Emergency procedures Dealing with emergency patients can be very rewarding, but can also be very stressful! Often procedures that the clinician may be unfamiliar with (or have only performed a few times), need to be carried out rapidly and under pressure if the patient is to be saved. The course enables the delegates to discuss these techniques and a chance to practice hands on in a wet lab situation. Day Two - Emergency Surgical Procedures This day will cover all of the major emergency surgical abdominal procedures which may be required in practice. In addition to the time tabled procedures, the lecturer is happy to cover additional procedures (e.g. pericardectomy) if desired by more advanced delegates where appropriate. By the end of day one delegates should have an understanding of: Placing a tracheostomy tube Thoracocentesis Chest drain placement and appropriate management When and how to place feeding tubes Placing central lines and their indications Intra-osseous needle placement By the end of day two delegates should be happy to perform: Gastropexy Cystotomy and urethrostomy/urethrotomy Diaphragmatic hernia Splenectomy Course fee includes an over-night stay! s Paul Aldridge BVSc CertSAS MRCVS (Speaking on day one) Paul qualified from Liverpool University in 1995, and for the past 13 years has been involved in Emergency Veterinary Medicine. He gained his RCVS certificate in Surgery in 2007, and is currently senior surgeon at a hospital based practice in the North West of England, that also hosts the UK s largest emergency centre. Paul divides his time between emergency cases and surgical referral patients. His clinical interests include multiple trauma patients and the management of acute abdominal cases. He is widely involved in providing CPD for both nurses and vets, and is co-author of the recently published book Practical Emergency and Critical Care Nursing.
