2 Find a Ride Waukesha County 2010 This guide is designed to help the residents of Waukesha County locate transportation options that best suit their needs. We hope this guide is helpful in getting you where you want to go. The funding for this guide is provided by a New Freedom Grant from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation. See for information. This guide is not an endorsement by Interfaith Senior Programs, Inc. of the providers listed, rather this guide is intended to present residents of Waukesha County with the most detailed information about transportation services available in the area. *Please note that the information provided in this guide is subject to change, and may not be inclusive of every option. Transportation providers are encouraged to contact Interfaith Senior Programs at with corrections and additions.*

4 Transportation Services Service Levels Fixed Route waits at bus stop for bus. Curb-To-Curb Rider goes to bus route and Rider goes to vehicle on their own when ride arrives. Driver drops rider off at the destination and returns to pick up rider for return trip back to residence. Door-To-Door Driver goes to residence door for rider and escorts to entrance of their destination. Driver returns to pick up rider after appointment and assists the rider back to the entrance of residence door. Door-Thru-Door Driver goes into residence, assists the rider into vehicle, escorts the rider into destination, and stays for the duration of the appointment. Driver then drives rider back to the residence and assists them back into the home. 1

5 Public Transportation Waukesha Metro Transit Metro Transit service boundaries include the City and Town of Waukesha, with service to Brookfield Square and WCTC in Pewaukee. When riding Waukesha Metro Transit, one can apply for the reduced fare program. This is available to Elderly and Disabled persons. *If you already have a Medicare card you automatically qualify for the program. All you have to do is show the Medicare card to the bus operator to qualify for the reduced fare. If you do not have a Medicare card, you must be certified by a physician or approved agency to receive the reduced fare and complete application forms. Call to receive the forms necessary to complete the certification steps for the reduced fare program. 6 Waukesha Metro Transit Phone: Badger Drive Waukesha, WI Service boundaries include the City and Town of Waukesha, with service to Brookfield Square and WCTC in Pewaukee. Also Express Commuter Routes provide service to Milwaukee. 7 Public Transportation Specialized Transit This form of transportation is available to older adults and adults with disabilities living in Waukesha County who are unable to use the Waukesha Metro Transit fixed route bus service. These services are subsidized for those who are eligible. You must contact the service directly to apply for eligibility and the subsidized fare. Please see the following section for contact information. 8 Waukesha Metro Transit Metrolift Phone: Badger Drive Waukesha, WI Metrolift operates within 3/4 mile of Waukesha Metro Transit fixed bus routes. Monday Friday: 5:30am 9:30pm Saturday: 8am 10pm Sunday: 9am 7pm Eligibility For persons unable to use the Waukesha Metro Transit fixed route bus service. Request a Metrolift application by calling Waukesha Metrolift at or at on the Metrolift page. Must be approved before using service. $3.75 per one-way trip Make next day reservation by 6:00pm the day before. Reservations can be made up to two weeks in advance. 9 Waukesha County Transit ADA Parallel Corridor Paratransit Service Phone: Badger Drive Waukesha, WI Origin and destination of the ride must fall within the ADA Paratransit Corridor (along I-94). The corridor parallels the service areas surrounding Waukesha Metro Route 901 and extends approximately one mile on either side of Route 901 along I-94 from Waukesha to Milwaukee. Schedule is the same as Route 901 schedule. Contact Waukesha Metro Transit for a current schedule and application. Eligibility Service is provided to individuals with disabilities according to the Americans with Disabilities Act for those unable to use fixed route transit services. Request an application by calling Waukesha Metrolift at or at on the Metrolift page. $ $7.50 depending on pick up and drop off locations Make next day reservations by 5:00 pm the day before. 10 Aging and Disability Resource (ADRC) Center of Waukesha County Taxi Program Phone: Riverview Avenue Waukesha, WI Call for an application to qualify for the subsidized taxi rate. This service is not wheelchair accessible. Trips within taxi service provider area. Call individual taxi service provider for information. Varies by service provider see individual taxi listings in this booklet Eligibility For Waukesha County residents only. Individual must be a non or limited driver, 65 years of age or older OR between 18 and 65 years of age and receiving SSI or SSDI. Passenger must be able to enter and exit a car with little or no assistance. Individuals pay a minimum of $3.50 towards the cost of each one-way trip. If the total cost of a one-way trip is greater than $9.00 the passenger is responsible to pay the amount over $9.00. Next day reservations are requested. Some same day requests may be honored. 23 Medical Transportation For Seniors and Adults in Waukesha County This type of transportation is usually provided by hospitals and provides transportation (for a fee) to and from doctor appointments. Many of the providers will also transport to adult day care and therapy appointments as well. Other options consist of the taxi companies that provide services to all residents in Waukesha County. 20

Patients must live within a 6 mile radius of Froedtert Hospital, have a documented financial need and no other means of transportation to the hospital. 44 Traveling from Waukesha County to Milwaukee County Using Specialized Transportation You can travel to Milwaukee County using the ADA Parallel Corridor, or the Transit Plus Program for destinations off the ADA Parallel Corridor. See instructions on pages 42 and

45 Traveling to Milwaukee County Destinations within the ADA Parallel Corridor: Transit Express Vans of Waukesha through Waukesha Metrolift provides transportation from Waukesha County, within the Waukesha Metro service area, to Milwaukee County within the I-94 ADA Parallel Corridor. To become a certified rider with Transit Express Vans you must apply with Waukesha Metrolift. Once certified you will be able to schedule your rides. Contact Waukesha Metrolift at or If you are within Metrolift s service area, Meda-Care Vans will pick you up and go straight to the Corridor. If you are outside Metrolift s service area, you must get to this area first. See page 6 for information on hours and fares. 42

46 Using the Transit Plus Program to Travel to Milwaukee County 6am 1am seven days a week $3.25 each way Qualification and Registration To qualify for services as a Waukesha County resident you must be registered for Metrolift Services. Contact Waukesha Metrolift at or If you are certified for Metrolift contact them to fax your certification to Transit Plus. Once approved you will gain Visitor Status for 21 days within the calendar year. If you will be a frequent user of this service it is best to register with Transit Plus to save time. TO SCHEDULE A RIDE TO YOUR DESTINATIONS OUTSIDE THE ADA PARALLEL CORRIDOR: Call Transit Plus at (414) to schedule your pick up at Brookfield Square Mall Transit Plus pick up and drop off points are located by the mall s food court (West parking lot area) there is a sign designating the pick up and drop off point If taking Waukesha Metrolift to Brookfield Square, be sure to schedule your ride to accommodate the 30 minute window each provider has available to them Transit Plus providers will pick you up and take you to your destination as scheduled 43

47 Re-Sharpening Driving Skills Older drivers can benefit from follow-up driving instruction and information about changes in driving habits and driving regulations to ensure safety on the road. AARP 55 Alive/Mature Driving is the nation s largest classroom improvement course for older drivers. The course helps drivers sharpen and develop defensive driving techniques. It is taught in two fourhour sessions spanning two days. AARP OUR-AARP or ( ) AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety or National Highway Traffic Safety Administration or Grand Driver or 44

48 Handicap Parking Permits Handicap parking is issued either as temporary (six months) or permanent (four year renewal cycle). This is available to individuals who have an approved handicap license plate or handicap ID card. A certified health care specialist must authorize the disability eligible for disabled parking. The handicap ID card can also be used as a passenger in another vehicle. A disabled veterans ID may be issued to a military veteran with a permanent disability incurred in active U.S. military service. For more information please call Wisconsin DMV at Renewing Driver s License/State ID Many older adults continue to renew their driver s licenses, even after they stop driving, to have it for identification. Non-drivers can obtain a state identification card that is an official document for identification. ID cards can be obtained at any DMV service center.
