3 Studying Law Our LLB in depth Plan your next steps Get to where you want to be... and fit it into your lifestyle Our LLB is a Qualifying Law Degreethis means that once you graduate you are able to go on to further training to become a solicitor or barrister. All Qualifying Law Degrees cover the same core subjects, or the Foundations of Legal Knowledge. In addition to these core subjects you will study a range of optional electives. These give you the opportunity to choose part of your studies to suit your interests and future career plans. Study options Full-time, part-time or distance learning We are very aware that students have differing requirements and lifestyles so we are able to offer a Qualifying Law Degree on a full-time, part-time or distance learning basis. LLB full-time and part-time students are taught in an interactive workshop environment, complemented by lectures and web-based materials. This offers an ideal environment for you to develop the skills required for the workplace, as well as gaining a wealth of legal knowledge. You will be taught by highly experienced tutors who have vast professional experience and contacts. This, together with the excellent extracurricular and social activities on offer, means that you will have considerable opportunity to develop in any way you wish. Our LLB in Legal Practice offers students a distance learning option. Podcasts are provided in lieu of lectures so that you can fit the course around other aspects of your lives; students are offered the versatility of learning when and where suits them. More than a law degree at Manchester Law School Put your learning into practice Our courses are designed with your career in mind, building the skills you will need for your future. It is important that you are able to put these skills into effect, whatever your chosen career path. We have an extensive programme that will give you the opportunity to work in a legal environment under the supervision of a qualified solicitor. Our Pro Bono Schemes are diverse in nature so you will find something to suit your interests and to complement your studies. Student Law Society Our Student Law Society is an awardwinning, lively student led society, with over 180 members each year. Getting involved with the Law Society will give you the opportunity to network and increase your contacts, meet students in different years on the LLB and also students on different courses, including the GDL, LPC, BPTC and LLM. CLG: The Critical Lawyers Group is a subsection of the Law Society. The Group hosts professional guest speakers from many different backgrounds, to talk to students about their experiences and their profession. These have included a professor from the Czech Republic, Barristers from North West Chambers and members of various charities. This group provides excellent opportunities to assess career options and increase your contacts and understanding of different professions. Mooting and Advocacy Group: This Group is a further subsection of the Law Society where you will be able to hone the art of debating contentious issues and research moots to aid your understanding of the law. Various internal competitions are organised throughout the academic year with practitioners from North West chambers and the Crown Prosecution Service judging the competitions. For those with no previous experience there are also various workshops arranged which ensure students at all levels of experience have an opportunity to take part and improve their skills. Our students have achieved outstanding success in national mooting and advocacy competitions over recent years by winning the Oxford University Press mooting competition and also Blackstone s National Criminal Advocacy Competition. The Student Law Society also arranges social events. The Law Ball is one of the most popular annual events and for the last one, held at The Palace in Manchester, tickets sold out very quickly. Manchester Law School offers a comprehensive range of postgraduate and professional programmes for you to consider following your LLB. You have the advantage of being able to continue your studies whether you wish to train as a solicitor or barrister, enhance your CV with our popular LLM programme or undertake a research degree. During my time at MMU I was keen to do more than just study. The extracurricular activities the School offered, such as the Critical Lawyers Group, did this and opened up opportunities for the future. Not only have they provided me with invaluable skills but they have also provided me with contacts and enduring friendships. Nick Little LLB (Hons), now working at Irwin Mitchell LLP Master of Laws (LLM) Our taught masters degrees give you the opportunity to deepen your knowledge of the law and acquire advanced legal skills whilst gaining an internationally recognised postgraduate qualification. You have the option to study a general LLM or to follow a specialist route where you focus on a particular field such as Equality Law, European Law, Human Rights Law or Law and the Society. Legal Practice Course (LPC) If you decide to go on to train as a solicitor then our Legal Practice Course has an excellent reputation. It is a rigorous course but provides outstanding opportunities to gain work experience and includes unbeatable support from teaching staff and our dedicated careers service. Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC) Your next step could be to train as a barrister and our BPTC is exceptional. Due to outstanding links with the profession and the fact that many of our staff continue to work in practice, you will not only receive the training required, but also enhance your career prospects. Research degrees Manchester Law School also offers opportunities to study, by research, for the degree of LLM, MPhil or PhD in a number of contemporary areas of law. 4 Zahra Al-Moozany LLB student Our undergraduate programmes When I was choosing a university, Manchester Metropolitan University stood out because of its teaching style; it is so different in comparison to other providers. The lectures give you the information you need and the workshops are a great way to consolidate what you have learned. They give you a real life way to learn, which ultimately helps you to pass exams and apply the law to situations outside of the textbook. Law Full-time LLB The teaching staff have relevant, professional backgrounds, which brings a lot to your learning, and that s what s unique: their experience helps to mould you into what the legal profession is looking for. Manchester Metropolitan University feels like a family network to me. The teaching staff really are there for you. They have drop-in sessions if you need to talk, but it s actually an open door policy if you need them. There is also the peer mentoring scheme, so you can talk to a fellow student if you feel more comfortable doing that. I ve realised since I came here that you are not just a little fish in a big pond; you are an individual, you count, and you are important to the University and the staff. I hope to stay here to complete my postgraduate studies and I d recommend it to anyone, particularly if they are debating between two universities. It s a very student focused university and the career prospects are excellent. If you want a first class education with a career focus, choose Manchester Metropolitan University. You won t be disappointed. Our full-time LLB is a Qualifying Law Degree so once you graduate you can go on to train as a solicitor or barrister if this is your chosen career path. 7 Josh Booth Josh completed the Foundation year at Manchester Law School and now studies fulltime on the LLB course. He plans to continue on to complete his LPC and train as a solicitor. When I applied to university, the foundation year was my back up option on the UCAS application whilst the straight LLB 3 year degree was my first choice. However, looking back I m so glad I took the foundation route as it has really benefitted me in the long term. I originally feared the foundation may be a wasted year just waiting to begin the LLB but it was the exact opposite. It was the perfect stepping-stone from college and allowed me to integrate myself into the university and learn how things are done. From help with referencing, to learning how to work independently, the foundation year prepares you for university life. When the first year of the LLB began, technically, it was my second year at university and it was great to feel like I had an advantage. I already knew the system, some people and the area and was familiar with university facilities such as the library, the Students Union, the IT suite. The teaching methods on the foundation year were excellent. The discipline and punctuality required was real and it was a great start to my university life. I would highly recommend it! Foundation Year Each year we accept students onto Foundation Year courses who have the potential ability to study at degree level but who don t have the qualifications to enter directly onto an Honours degree. The Foundation Year is an integral part of the law degree and the content of the Foundation Year is tailored to your LLB so that you start year 1 with confidence. If you choose the Foundation Year route, you will apply for a four-year course. Once you have passed your Foundation Year you will progress directly onto Year 1 of the LLB and, if you are a full-time UK student, you will qualify for student financial support for the full duration of your course. Develop your academic and study skills You will study four Foundation Year units designed to develop your academic and study skills: Academic Skills for Higher Education Civil Justice Criminal Justice Introduction to Business English and Academic Practice (for International Students only) Entry requirements for a Foundation Year The typical minimum entry requirements for a law degree that includes a Foundation Year are usually 200 UCAS tariff points. The points must come from full A levels (not AS) or equivalent qualifications, for example BTEC Level 3 Diploma/Extended Diploma or CACHE Level 3 Diploma. Vocational qualifications at level 3 will also be considered, for example NVQ. If you have other qualifications that are not included in the UCAS tariff we are happy to consider the suitability of these qualifications. You will also need to have a grade D or above (or an acceptable alternative) in GCSE English language and mathematics. For full details of Foundation Year entry requirements, please visit mmu.ac.uk. If English is not your first language you will also need to have IELTS 5.5 (or an equivalent English language qualification). You will be placed on our Foundation Year International Route which provides additional English language, study skills and tutor support through the English and Academic Practice Unit. Applying for a Foundation Year You apply for our LLB with a foundation year through UCAS and it has a unique UCAS code, M101. law.mmu.ac.uk/llb Despite starting university from college, I felt incredibly out of touch and had no idea as to what was expected of me. The foundation year did exactly as the title suggested, it laid out the foundation for me to achieve on my degree. I am very happy with the support I received from staff and was encouraged to take every opportunity to be involved in various extra-curricular activities. After four years, I am proud to say I graduated with honours this year from a brilliant institution Faiza Saeed LLB graduate (including foundation year) 12 Law mmu.ac.uk/law 13
