From debates around fair and transparent rewards for top management, through to the implementation of flexible work practices such as zero hours contracts, and how to manage best the talent within an organisation in order to enhance performance, are all challenges for the HR manager to consider and implement. Knowledge of employment law and employee relations, alongside an understanding of how to incentivise individuals and teams are vital for anyone wanting to build a career in human resource (HR) management whether in the UK or in an international context. Studying human resource management will equip you with the necessary skills to manage people within organisations. Why study at Manchester Metropolitan University? MMU has an established reputation of producing top quality managers. We are an Approved Centre for the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), which means that our HR courses are recognised and accredited by the professional body, which means you can gain dual awards and become members of the Institute. Our undergraduate HR programmes have also seen our graduates move into specialist and generalist management positions in large multinationals and SMEs around the UK and globally. Whether you choose to follow a threeyear degree route or our four-year integrated Masters or placement routes, as a Manchester Metropolitan University graduate, you will be able to benefit from our strong links with employers and industry. Our graduates have established successful careers in the HR professions, with alumni returning for further study on our popular postgraduate HRM courses, returning to the Business School as guest speakers or becoming advisors to our degree programmes to maintain their practical and professional relevance. We are growing our suite of HR related degrees and now offer an integrated masters with the innovative, four-year Integrated Masters in Human Resource Management (M.HRM) with industrial experience. This means you can gain both work experience and advanced HRM skills in your fourth year of study, while at the same time gaining a postgraduate qualification in the same time period as you would study for an undergraduate one. Developing skills and knowledge for rewarding careers As with all degrees at MMU, our HR degrees encourage strategic awareness, providing insights into organisational planning, strategy, enterprise, and competitive positioning that is necessary for successful modern businesses. Alongside this, we develop your key personal skills, enhancing your ability to make the best of yourself, become an early career professional and mobilise others. mmu.ac.uk/hrm 3

4 Our HRM programmes Human Resource Management is all about people. People are vital to the success of any business and working in HR means you will have to manage issues related to people within an organisation, and the environment within which they work. Human Resource Management BA (Hons) This degree enables you to develop the skills, knowledge and understanding to become a successful human resources professional. Human resource management is a key business discipline, because attracting, training and retaining the right staff directly affects the performance of a business. Consequently, intelligent organisations and companies invest in their human resources departments and smaller companies will either employ someone with HR knowledge or outsource this element of their business to a HR consultancy. The role of a HR professional can be very diverse and you can choose to concentrate upon particular areas, or work across a number of HR spheres. The course will focus on core human resource management areas, such as HR strategy, effective organisational structure, staff recruitment and retention, training and development, employment law and equality and diversity, as well as how leaders develop and motivate their employees to achieve high standards of performance. The course will develop your personal, interpersonal, coaching, mentoring and group skills so that you can become an effective manager in any business sector. You will also study strategic issues such as the relations between employees and employee organisations, the structure of labour markets, and the wider impact an organisation can have on a variety of stakeholders, such as the local community in which it operates. Typical units of study may include the following, but can be subject to change. Year 1 You will study four, 30-credit units: Dynamic Business Environment This unit introduces the topics of markets and globalisation, technological development, fundamental macroeconomic elements and concepts in addition to social, cultural and ecological factors that an organisation should be considering when in operation. Finance and Accounting Information for Managers On completing this unit, you will be able to analyse basic financial statements and extract relevant data to assess financial performance of an organisation and assist in making business decisions. Understanding and Managing People This unit provides you with a broad understanding of a range of critical concepts and models that are related to understanding and managing people. You will also learn about work and behaviour in both national and international organisations. Human Resource Management in Practice This unit will help you identify, apply and evaluate a range of key human resource management concepts and theories that are related to the management of people. Year 2 You will study three, 30-credit units and one optional unit: Learning, Coaching and Development You will gain a valuable understanding of learning styles, the training cycle, skills of training and coaching, leadership theories and teamwork. Other key themes you will explore are ethics in training and coaching, employability through personal development and e-learning. Managing Effective Organisations This unit prepares you to engage critically with the concept and practice of management. The unit examines some of the most significant activities and processes associated with management, including the ways in which culture, ethics, gender, politics and power come to shape how management is seen and practiced. Employment Law and Employment Relations This unit will introduce you to employment relations, the parties managing the employment relationship and the themes of conflict and voice. You will also explore the fundamental sources of employment law. Optional units: Ideas, Creativity and Entrepreneurship Managing Across Cultures Work Based Learning (Procedures, Policy and Practice) 4 Human Resource Management

5 Year 3 If you are on the placement route, you undertake a minimum of 36 weeks paid work experience between Year 2 and Year 3. If you are on the overseas study route, you study at a university in Europe, North America, Australia or China (Hong Kong) between Year 2 and Year 3. If you are on the full-time route, you progress directly to Year 3. You will study four, 30-credit units: Psychology at Work In this unit, you study how the use of psychology is equipping current and future HR managers with the tools to achieve a more productive and satisfying workplace. Contemporary Perspectives on Human Resource Management This unit will allow you to assess the strategic environment that shapes HRM and will focus on strategies for leading a HR function. You will also examine the key people strategies that organisations expect to deliver enhanced performance. Global Human Resource Management In this unit, you will analyse the key features of employment systems in selected countries, looking at the history of their development and comparing and contrasting their similarities and differences. Business Project Research This is a compulsory unit required for the CIPD award. It is an individual research project, one that enables you to apply the theory you have covered throughout the course in looking at practical HR related issues. You will be supported by an academic supervisor and will have workshops to develop your research skills, but the project itself provides an opportunity for you to develop your critical thinking and project management skills, both of which are crucial for enhancing your graduate employability. This is a dual award degree, so when you graduate, in addition to your degree you will also qualify for the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) Intermediate Level Diploma. mmu.ac.uk/13025 Lesley Halpin A mature student who graduated from the BA (Hons) Human Resource Management degree in 2014 I chose MMU for many reasons. Working as an Executive Assistant for two decades with aspirations of a new career in human resources, the course content looked dynamic, diverse and challenging. The programme has lived up to its expectations and the course has provided a diverse mix of learning and experiences, which will equip and prepare me to pursue my new HR career with confidence. Apart from the many new skills, knowledge and experiences, it has opened doors to new networking opportunities through the Manchester Industrial Relations Society (MIRS), students and tutors, as well as opening new networks from undertaking a Business Research Project within the Banking Sector. MMU s two-day Boot Camp for new business ventures was vital in helping me to prepare for setting up my own HR Business (VPA Services). mmu.ac.uk/hrm 5

11 Placement Year A placement year can be an excellent opportunity to acquire high quality work experience and structured on the job training whilst earning a salary. A placement route is only available to students on the BA (Hons) Human Resource Management degree, while shorter work experience is offered to those on the M.HRM programme. There are also opportunities for you to undertake a placement based project where you research a business issue for your employer. This project can count towards one of your final year units and reduces your workload in your final year. The placement must be a minimum of 36 weeks but it will usually last for 12 months and takes place after your second year of study. We have an established award-winning placement team, who advertise vacancies and can help you find a placement. The team has over 25 years experience of matching students to employers. They advertise over 1,000 vacancies each year, organise an annual placement fair where you meet employers who are actively recruiting placement students, deliver CV workshops, provide one-to-one advice, and will conduct a mock interview with you so you can practice your interview technique. The placement jobs market is competitive and it is your responsibility to be pro-active and apply for vacancies. We recommend that you start researching companies and opportunities during your first year and apply for positions at the start of your second year. Finding the right opportunity and the right position is important because if you are a good match to your placement, your employer could offer you a full-time position when you have graduated. The knowledge and experience that I have gained from my placement has been invaluable. What I knew about HR before I started my placement seems so little to what I know now. Taking a placement has given me an advantage when applying in the future for jobs as I ve now got some HR experience.
