1 Institute for Visualization and Perception Research Department of Computer Science 198 Riverside St., Olsen Hall, Rm. 301C, Lowell, MA (cell) An expert in data visualization and knowledge discovery, applying modern visual presentation and machine learning techniques visual analytics to the analysis of biological, clinical, chemical, operational, and spatiotemporal data sets. Experienced identifying data inconsistencies, providing statistical summaries and global overviews, formulating and testing scientific hypotheses, performing exploratory investigations, summarizing important findings, and generating marketable results. Furthermore, a scientist who excels in organizational skills, pays particular attention to details, and perpetually cultivates an expanding personal multidisciplinary knowledgebase. OBJECTIVE EXPERTISE EXPERIENCE Seeking a research position for the continued advancement of the field of visualization for a variety of applications, including: national security, regional indicators, and personalized medicine Discovery Tools AnVil s ADAPT ( Best of Show at Bio-ITWorld 2003), Spotfire s DecisionSite, SPSS Clementine and SPSS for Windows, Visual Insight s Advizor, SGI s MineSet, IBM s Intelligent Miner, R-project, Weka, Insightful s S-Plus, and Microsoft s Excel Programming Languages Java/Swing, C#, C/C++, Python, and Perl Web Technology HTML, DHTML, XHTML, DOM, XML, JavaScript, CSS, SVG, and VML Databases MySQL, Oracle, and Microsoft Access and SQL Server System Administration Microsoft Windows 2000, XP, 2003 Server, and HTTP and FTP services 2003 present Institute for Visualization and Perception Research Post-doctoral Research Fellow & Senior Scientist Managing 18 graduate students and their project work, and applying their knowledge to realworld problems to further the field of visualization and analysis. Developing a Java-based Universal Visualization Platform (UVP) as chief architect. Designed for students and researchers, this platform supports the exploration and analysis of data sets, and the development of visualization and analysis tools. In addition, the UVP captures the process of exploration for documentation, evaluation, training, and formalization. Examining current cancer risk models with the aid of the UVP for the Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston. Applying the techniques of discovery and analysis to the understanding of risk models, their differences, and for improvement. Developed a web-enabled visualization system supporting the analysis of gene expression microarrays for the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, Worcester. This system is 1 OF 6
2 providing insight into diabetes through the combination of insulin pathway graphs and tools for identifying differentially expressed genes. Produced a desktop visualization dashboard supporting the interactive display of corporate network utilization for Evident Software, Inc., Bloomfield, New Jersey, as a mechanism to assist the billing of individual departments for network usage. Analyzed the historical database of the s grants and proposals and provided real figures to assist the university s task force that looked into defining a strategic plan for research development. The findings of this work helped identify highyielding funding sources, established a funded-research baseline, and provided grounds for grant writing assistance. Examined terrorist activities within Afghanistan between 2002 and 2003 based on publicly available news reports as a proof-of-concept project for BBN Technologies, Cambridge, Massachusetts. By combining and linking geographic maps and visualization techniques, this work revealed correlations between attacks over time along known transportation routes through which future incidences could be predicted AnVil, Inc. (formally, AnVil Informatics, Inc.) Burlington, Massachusetts Informatics Scientist (co-founder) Fulfilled company s mission goal to provide information discovery expertise for the commercialization of knowledge. Lead a group of three scientists in conjunction with researchers at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) through the analysis of three independent lung cancer gene expression data sets and the discovery of gene markers for lung cancer diagnostics. Conducted a group of five informatisists in the identification on the effectiveness of prescribed medications for orthopedic and stroke populations within the healthcare clinical data for HealthSouth, Birmingham, Alabama. Directed a team of three in the evaluation of a sleep-wake bioassay system for automatic characterization of drugs and their impact on a wide spectrum of sleep and wake parameters. Engaged in the analysis of insurance collected clinical data for the experimental optimization of medical treatment billing based upon appropriate procedures as defined by estimated medical results. Participated in a variety of projects looking at gene expression data sets from cdna and oligonucleotide microarrays, and the application of various normalization techniques. Contributed to the research and editing of a funded SBIR Phase I report that was focused on data clustering and the comparison of clustering techniques with various data sets, as well as assisted in the writing of the follow-up SBIR Phase II proposal Institute for Visualization and Perception Research Research Fellow Coordinated and managed the visualization activities for the EPA s EarthVision 2000 Project; a joint project between the Ohio State University and the. This project provided scientific research experience to regional high school students by 2 OF 6
3 applying mathematical modeling and computer visualization to understand and solve environmental problems. Identified gene sets and functional groups from both human and yeast gene expression experiments for the Genetics Institute, Cambridge, Massachusetts. Obtained practical experience analyzing real-world business market and sales data for the General Motors Data Mining Group located at the GM Technical Center, Detroit, Michigan. Conceptualized ideas for visualizing web site customer access profiles and identifying access patterns for Accrue Software, Inc., Sunnyvale, California. Visualized and modeled the ionosphere for the U.S. Air Force, Phillips Laboratory / GPIA, Hanscom AFB, Massachusetts. This project involved the development of visualization tools for helping geophysicists understand the formation and structure of depletions within the Earth s ionosphere Center for Family, Work, and Community Teaching Assistant Provided technical support for the creation and release of a geographic information system using MapInfo and MapBasic to support student understanding of local communities. Participated on the College of Arts and Sciences 1998 Task Force on Geographic Information Systems enabling the sharing of information and strategies across departments within the.
