I. PERSONAL ARCHIVE OF BOOKS, RELATED WRITINGS, RESEARCH MATERIALS, FIELD NOTES, MUSICIAN S CONTRACTS, STUDIO SESSION LISTINGS, AND PHOTOGRAPHS I A. Books Written and Recordings Produced by Samuel Charters I A1. Books Related to the Study of African American Music by Samuel Charters JAZZ: NEW ORLEANS, Belleville, NJ: Walter C. Allen, Paperback first edition. Dodd B 5601 Walter C. Allen was a research chemist and jazz hobbiest who published a series of Jazz Monographs, of which this was Number 2. He was responsible for typing the manuscript and designing the book, which came out a few months after I sent him the manuscript. The book had involved several years of research in New Orleans and then a long period of writing, and my advance against royalties from Walter was $5, which even that long ago didn t really seem like a lot of money. This copy is inscribed to Ann Charters. JAZZ NEW ORLEANS New York: Oak Publication Reprint. Paperback reprint. Dodd A 4496 With new material, and a new introduction. The end date in the title of the book was changed to reflect the additions. There had been such a strong reaction to the first publication of the book that I welcomed the opportunity to rewrite some of the biographies and add new material which had come to light on Buddy Bolden on subsequent trips to New Orleans. 2nd printing. Da Capo Reprint. Hardcover, institutional red binding, no dust jacket. Offset from the revised Oak edition. New York, Da Capo, Dodd B 5536 COMING THROUGH SLAUGHTER. Michael Ondaatje. Toronto: Anasi, c1976. Dodd A 4495 THE COUNTRY BLUES New York: Rinehart & Company, Dodd B 5571 This copy includes the promotional portrait distributed with review copies. This book was the result of a question by jazz writer Nat Hentoff after a radio program when he and Gunther Schuller had interviewed me about Jazz: New Orleans, and played selections from the Folkways albums. He asked me what I was doing, and I said I wanted to write a book about the blues. He told me to send a sample to editor Ted Amundsen at Rinehart. I did the sample in a week, took it to the Rinehart office on a Thursday, and on Monday there was a telegram in the 1

mailbox of the building on Broadway where I was living in a sculptor s studio telling me that they wanted to publish the book, they had an English publisher, and would I come to the office and sign a contract. I did the additional field research for the book in the December and January, then after Ann and I were married in March, 1959, I wrote the book in 36 days in our one room basement apartment, working at night at our small kitchen table while Ann slept. A copy used for reprinting. [not transferred] This is a copy of the first edition, without dust wrapper, but it was disassembled and then rebound in the original boards for the Da Capo reprint. This copy was given by Moe Asch - to whom the book is dedicated to a friend, and it is signed and dedicated by Asch. It was also trimmed in the production process, and the pages are smaller than the original production. The First English edition. London, Michael Joseph, Dodd B 5572 The text is identical with the American edition, with the exception of an appendix written especially for the English edition which describes reissue recordings of songs described in the text which were available in England. Da Capo Reprint: New York: Da Capo Press, Dodd B 5588 With a new introduction, and some corrections to the text. Hardcover, with institutional red binding. No dust jacket, as published. By the time Da Capo published their reprint in 1975 I had left the United States and I was living in Sweden. I used the new introduction to explain why I had left, and also to discuss some of the thinking behind the original research and writing. The reprint sells steadily, and the book has now been continuously in print for 40 years. Da Capo Reprint, paper edition. Dodd B 5574 Da Capo Reprint. Slightly different back cover and price listing. Dodd B 5573 Die Story Vom Blues A German translation. Munchen: Nymphenburger, Dodd A 4487a Translated by Iris and Rolf Hellmut Foerster. A reprint of the German translation. Hamburg, Rowohlt Taschenbuch Verlag, Dodd A 4488 An Austrian reprint of the German translation. St. Andra Worden, Robert Azderball, Hannibal Verlag, Dodd A 4485 JAZZ: A HISTORY OF THE NEW YORK SCENE New York: Doubleday, Dodd C 5550 This was the second of the two books I wrote in the spring and summer of I wrote in a sustained burst over 42 nights following a short break from the writing of The Country Blues. The author credit is for myself and Leonard 2

Kundstadt, but Len did not participate in the writing. He was a close friend who had been gathering research materials on New York jazz for many years as part of his work as co-editor of Record Research Magazine. I had a rough outline of the book, and I would ask Len to bring the material for each chapter as I needed it. He would stand outside the window of our basement apartment in the morning, his arms filled with research materials from his files, and he would announce his presence by playing us a hot chorus on the kazoo. Actually there are three sentences in a middle chapter that are Len s. Reprint edition. New York: Da Capo, There is a new introduction, written in With pictorial wrappers. [not transferred] Reprint edition. New York: Da Capo, This is the standard red cloth bound edition for libraries. Dodd B 5561 Reprint edition. New York: Da Capo, This is the soft cover edition, with pictorial wrappers. Dodd B 5560 THE POETRY OF THE BLUES New York: Oak Publications, Dodd B 5600 This book was the result of a question from Moe Asch of Folkways Records about the possibility of my doing an album for him which would illustrate the elements of blues poetry. When I assembled the examples I wanted to use, I listened back to the tape and realized that I couldn t understand what everyone was singing without spending so much time puzzling out the words that the effect of the song was lost. Instead, I quickly wrote this book and offered it to Moe as a realistic introduction to the subject. The initial cover had a Ronald Clyne design which I thought was particularly effective. I have not permitted a current reprint of this book - the only one of the books that I have taken out of circulation - because I feel that the subject is much broader and much more complex than my text suggests. Mass market reprint. New York: Avon Books, [not transferred] This edition was published in the midst of the psychedelic revolution and it has a freely conceived cover that matches the period. The book sold well and achieved a wide circulation in this format. There were no changes in the text. Japanese Translation. Tokyo, Chuo Art Publishing, Dodd A4787 This copy signed by the translator, Shigemi Sato. THE BLUESMEN New York: Oak Publications, Dodd C 5609 The hard cover edition. This copy is signed with a presentation to the family of Bill Colyer. 3

Paperback edition. This was identical with the hard cover edition and was published at the same time. [not transferred] This was the first volume of an intended three volume study of the pre-war blues. I wanted to correct many of the historical inaccuracies of The Country Blues and present more material on artists like Charley Patton and Son House, who were still little known at the time of the earlier book. There was also less emphasis on artists who had been successful with the blues audience of their time, and a stronger focus on singers like Patton and Robert Johnson, whose music had found a broad audience in the blues revival. The main areas of study in the were musicians from Texas and Mississippi. The book was written during a period when I was writing a great deal of prose and poetry and the style is more florid than I am comfortable with now. The Sixties left a stronger imprint on all of us than we realized at the time. THE LIFE, THE TIMES, THE SONGS OF COUNTRY JOE & THE FISH New York: Ryerson Music Publishers, Dodd C 5570 This was conceived as a collection of songs by the popular group I was producing for Vanguard Records. Ryerson Music was a Vanguard entity, and the company had already been very successful with a Joan Baez song book. There were more problems with the arrangements for this book, and production was delayed until the commercial justification for the book had passed. My role in the book was a history of the band that introduced the chronological sections. ROBERT JOHNSON New York: Oak Publications, Dodd C 5669 There are two editions of this book, identical except for the size. The first edition was published in a smaller size - 7 x 10 - but since most of the contents consists of transcriptions of Johnson s songs the decision was made to enlarge the page size to a music folio size - 8 1/2 x 11. In the first set of proofs I received of the book I found that a professional music editor had revised all of my transcriptions to suit standard song notation, which reduced the complexities of Johnson s phrasing to the level of a Christmas carol collection. When the editor defended what he had done I immediately wrote the publisher and called what had been done a racist act. After only a moment of hesitation the publisher agreed to redo the musical notation, and the book has had steady sales, and has survived the legal problems which arose over the copyrights of Johnson s songs. THE LEGACY OF THE BLUES A Glimpse into the art and the lives of twelve great bluesmen. An informal study. London: Calder and Boyars, Dodd B 5563 and Dodd A This is the first of the books I did with Marion Boyars. She was married to Arthur Boyars, who is at some remove my wife s cousin. We met Marion and Arthur while we were staying with the Stoll family in London, awaiting the birth of our second daughter, Nora. The book grew out of a series of records I had produced for Sonet Records with the same title and the same design. There was a marketing package which combined an LP sampler of the series and the paper 4

back edition of the book, but because of British merchandising restrictions the books could not be sold in record shops, and the records could not be sold in bookshops. Paperback edition. Calder and Boyars published a simultaneous paperback edition. Dodd B 5563 Paperback reprint. New York: Da Capo, Dodd B 5564 Paperback reprint. London: Marion Boyars, Dodd B 5562 The text is photographed from the existing plates and there is a new cover. This edition is printed on considerably better paper stock than the first edition. Zavestanje Bluza. A translation into Serbo-Croatian. A large book, 11 x 11. Dodd D 1530 The blues text are reprinted in English, using photocopies of the original pages. A Japanese translation. Tokyo, Shobunsha, Dodd A 4785 SWEET AS THE SHOWERS OF RAIN. The Bluesmen, Volume II New York: Oak Publications, Paperback only. [not transferred] When I left the United States at the end of 1970 I was not certain that I would continue with the three volume study of the early blues that I had promised in the introduction to The Bluesmen. Then, at the end of a television interview in Helsinki, a Finnish sound technician came up to me and asked, When will you do Volume II of Bluesmen? and I realized that I should do at least the second volume of the project. As I said in the introduction to the new book, Mike Rowe s study, Chicago Breakdown, covered that area so thoroughly that there was no need for me to complete the third volume, which was to cover Chicago blues. This second volume covers singers of Memphis, Tennessee, Atlanta, and the Carolinas. SPELMANNEN - (THE SWEDISH FIDDLERS) Stockholm: Editions Sonet/Wahlstrom & Widstrand, Dodd C 5663 and Dodd C I list this title in my bibliography under an English version of the title, but the book was written and published in Swedish. It is the first study of Swedish folk fiddling, and was the result of three years of research and travel in Sweden. There is a summary of the text in English included as an appendix, but there has not been a translation into English. Sonet Records: Spelmannen, same date /LP1258 This is an LP released in conjunction with the book, and containing historical examples of Swedish folk fiddling described in the text. THE ROOTS OF THE BLUES, An African Search 5

Boston/London: Marion Boyars, Dodd B 5566 The book was the product of three journeys to West Africa in the mid-1970s. At the time of my first trip to The Gambia in 1974 I realized that it had been twenty years since I had produced my first New Orleans recordings, and I hadn t been to Africa. Although the book is not hard to read, and it won an award and has been steadily reprinted, it was difficult to write. I didn t have any kind of model for the kind of book I wanted it to be, and there were many revisions and reconsiderations. During the African journeys I also did several recordings that were released in Sweden and the United States, and someone reading the chapter on A River Place will find that the place I am describing is also the setting for the novel Mr. Jabi And Mr. Smythe. A Perigee Book: Paperback edition, Dodd B 5568 British Paperback edition. London: Quartet Books, Dodd B 5567 The text was photographed from the hard cover edition of the year before. American Paperback edition. New York, Da Capo, ND. Dodd B 5565 MR. JABI AND MR. SMYTHE A novel. Only edition, New York and London: Marion Boyars, Dodd B 5570 The story is set in West Africa in the 1970s, specifically nine years after the departure of the English colonial government. The setting, though it s not specified in the novel, is the island of Georgetown in the Gambia River, a day s journey upriver from the coast. This is the same area of Africa that is described in the non-fiction work The Roots of the Blues. JELLY ROLL MORTON S LAST NIGHT AT THE JUNGLE INN A Novel. New York and London: Marion Boyars, Dodd B 5553 As I said in the introduction to the book, I had wanted to write about Jelly Roll for many years, but I found the work of an entire biography too daunting, and also a biography wouldn t have given me the room to invent and improvise which was what I had dreamed of doing with Morton s life. The result was this blend of fiction and memoir, which Marion Boyars always had difficulty settling in her own mind. Which was it? The first edition was subtitled, as I had suggested, An Imaginary Memoir, but later editions suggest that this is a Morton biography. The publisher and I finally agreed to disagree over this catalog description. First paperback. London: Marion Boyars, [not transferred] The hard cover edition of the book was poorly made and Marion Boyars finally decided that the best way around the problem was to remove the bindings from unsold stock and rebind the body of the book with a newly designed cover which quoted some of the early reviews. 6

Current paperback. London: Marion Boyars, Dodd B 5569 LOUISIANA BLACK A novel. Only edition, New York and London: Marion Boyars, Dodd B 4170 Although this is a novel, it is set in Louisiana and one scene is set in a night club. The band described playing in the club is the zydeco group Rockin Dopsie and the Cajun Twisters. Unproduced screenplay. In binder of International Creative Management, Inc. Screenplay by Lukas Heller, Additional Dialog by Cecil Brown. Jan, 26, Dodd C 5733 Unproduced screenplay. In binder of International Creative Management, Inc. Screenplay by Nevin Schreiner. May 2, Dodd C 5734 The novel was filmed under the title White Lies in THE BLUES MAKERS A Da Capo Reprint. New York: Da Capo, Dodd C 5584 This is a large reprint which includes two earlier books, The Bluesmen and Sweet As The Showers Of Rain. My original intention had been to write a three volume blues history to replace The Country Blues. The first volume, which discussed the rural blues artists from Mississippi, Alabama, and Texas, was published before I left the United States, and I probably would not have begun the second volume if I had not been asked by a Finnish sound technician, after I d appeared on a program in Helsinki, When are you going to do the second volume of Bluesmen? Sweet As The Showers Of Rain, which covers Memphis, Atlanta, and the Carolinas, was written in Sweden, using the materials I had brought with me. The projected third volume would have discussed urban blues of Chicago, both prewar and post-war. I explained in the introduction to Sweet As The Showers that Mike Rowe s excellent book on South Side blues, Chicago Breakdown, had made my third volume unnecessary. ELVIS PRESLEY CALLS HIS MOTHER AFTER THE ED SULLIVAN SHOW Minneapolis: Coffee House Press, Paperback only. Dodd B 5132 Although I wrote the book only a short time after I d written the Jelly Roll Morton memoir Marion Boyars rejected the manuscript - too sentimental - and I neglected to do anything more with it. My daughter Nora found it, read it, and told me I had to send it to another publisher. Coffee House accepted it within a few days after receiving the manuscript, and scheduled an early publication. The book was held up for a few months, however, by the Presley Estate, which attempts to control anything published about him. Finally we were permitted to 7

publish, but no photographs of Presley could be used, so the book had an art cover instead. Bound galleys. Same publisher and date. [not transferred] There were a limited number of bound galleys prepared for reviewers. THE DAY IS SO LONG AND THE WAGES SO SMALL New York and London: Marion Boyars, Paperback only. Dodd A 4374 For several years I had intended to write about the Bahamas summer of 1958, when Ann - then Danberg - and I traveled to Andros Island to record African influenced vernacular music, but there was no opportunity until the summer of 1998 in Stockholm. I was scheduled to record an album with a Swedish artist, but he didn t have the material ready so the sessions were postponed. July was gray and rainy, so I spent most of the month in our apartment writing. I sent the manuscript to Marion Boyars, asking if I could have a quick reply, and she called me four days after receiving the manuscript, saying she liked it very much and she wasn t even going to put it through an editing stage. Instead she would put it directly into production. The book was in the page proof stage at the time of Marion s death from cancer in January, Bound galleys. Same publisher and date. [not transferred] There were a limited number of bound galleys prepared for reviewers. A CHECKLIST OF PRODUCTIONS, RECORDINGS, COMPILATIONS, AND WRITING FOR ALBUM RELEASE [Storrs, CT : S. They provided an opportunity to create a larger presentation of a musical idiom, and also made it possible to trace the interconnections and influences that give any musical style its unique character. In the/ 1950s, when almost all of my recording was done in the artists houses, outdoors on the streets, or in dance halls, I did the five-volume Music of New Orleans series, which Folkways Records released beginning in the spring of After the summer of 1958, recording on the beaches or the house porches of Andros Island in the Bahamas with Ann Charters as an assistant and photographer, I produced the three volume series Music of the Bahamas, which also was released by Folkways. I felt that the criteria for a series was that it should document a clearly defined musical area, and the recordings should present enough of the main trends and styles of the music to clarify the music s distinct identity. I began with the same criteria in the albums of blues reissues I produced for Folkways on the subsidiary RBF label in the 1960s, but when I began working for Sonet Records in Sweden Moe Asch of Folkways used the format to introduce a wider range of musical styles than I had originally envisioned. In 1965 I had the opportunity with Chicago/The Blues/Today! to document the blues scene in the small neighborhood clubs of Chicago s South Side for Vanguard Records. It was conceived as a portrait of the blues styles in the clubs at that moment, and the three albums of the series included every style of blues that I had found over the years I was listening to music in Chicago.. When I began working for Sonet Records in Stockholm in 1970 and moved with my family to Sweden I didn t expect to continue recording the blues, but my new company had world-wide distribution and there was still a large and enthusiastic international blues audience. For Sonet I did the twelve volume series The Legacy of the Blues, and from the field recordings I did in Africa in the mid- 19

1970s I produced the two-volume set African Journey of songs and instrumental music which also was released on Sonet. Later Folkways released a two volume boxed set The Griots: Ministers of the Spoken Word, compiled from the chanted narrative songs of West African griots I had recorded.. In the 1980s and the 1990s there was a growing interest in album series for the new CD format, drawing on the material the record companies had been collecting in their vaults over the last two decades. Even if the material had been previously released on LP, the CD offered at least a third more playing time, and many buyers insisted that this time should be used for more music. Often it meant that material from the original sessions that had been discarded could be added to the tracks from the initial release, as well as versions and takes of material that were too long to fit comfortably onto an LP side. Also for many of these concept series it was possible to compile albums that drew from a number of earlier releases. Over the next twenty years I produced a number of these extended series documentations for Prestige Records, Vanguard Records, Sonet Records, and Universal Music. THE PRESTIGE RECORDS EXTENDED SERIES The Bluesville Years Beginning in the late 1950s Prestige, which had been known exclusively as a jazz label, began releasing its albums in different categories, and most of the names of the category titles ended in ville. Among others there were Swingsville and Moodsville as well as Bluesville. The company s active line of folk albums kept its earlier title, The Prestige Folklore Series. I was brought in by Bill Belmont of Fantasy Records, the larger company that had bought Prestige, to create first a blues series, The Bluesville Years, then a folk series, The Prestige Folklore Years. There was an additional folk series from the catalog of Riverside Records, The Riverside Folklore Series. Riverside was another New York jazz label that had moved into folk music in the late 1950s and early 1960s as the audience s interest in jazz faded, and Riverside was now also under the Fantasy umbrella of labels.
