2 WELCOME FROM THE DEAN Dear Alumni and Guests, Welcome to the Fourth Annual UCF College of Engineering & Computer Science (CECS) Alumni Honors Reception. Tonight, it is our college s privilege to recognize distinguished alumni for their remarkable professional contributions and their dedication to CECS and UCF. I hope you share with me the pride I have in being a member of this great college that has educated nearly 27,000 engineers and computer scientists since it was founded in The University of Central Florida was established in the spirit that if we reach for the stars, dreams come true. The distinguished alumni we honor tonight are truly the stars of our college and this university. As we celebrate their achievements, we look forward to sharing their stories and having them share their personal experiences from UCF and beyond. 4 Department of Civil, Environmental & Construction Engineering Distinguished Alumnus DAVID MULHOLLAND B.S. CE, 93 Presented by Dr. Mohamed Abdel-Aty, P.E., Department Chair David (Dave) Mulholland is a professional engineer and entrepreneur. Five years after graduation from UCF, Dave founded GMB Engineers & Planners, a transportation planning, traffic operations and engineering consulting firm with two partners. Over the past 15 years, the firm has been expanded to more than 65 employees specifically in transportation, with offices in Orlando, Atlanta and Chipley. Dave has provided professional transportation-related services to local, state and international clients. With the expansion of the company, Dave still continues to support UCF by recently securing four research grants for the university with the Department of Transportation. Recently, the Central Florida Engineers Week named GMB Engineers & Planners the 2014 Outstanding Small Private Organization. 4 UCF College of Engineering & Computer Science

5 Department of Electrical Engineering & Computer Science Computer Science Division Distinguished Alumnus Presented by Dr. Gary Leavens, Division Chair CRAIG MILLER M.S. CS, 89 Barry C. (Craig) Miller is vice president of Systems Engineering for Harris Government Communications Systems (GCS). GCS develops, produces, integrates, and supports advanced communications and information systems that solve the mission critical challenges of its defense, national intelligence, and civil agency customers worldwide. Craig is responsible for technical management and execution of all aspects of a 3,600-person engineering and technology organization that supports U.S. and international government programs. Prior to his career at Harris, he was the unit chief responsible for F-15 avionics at Warner Robins Air Force Base in Georgia. He has had extensive business and management training, including executive development training through the University of Virginia s Darden School of Business. 4 th Annual Alumni Honors Reception 5

6 Department of Electrical Engineering & Computer Science Electrical Engineering Division Distinguished Alumnus TERENCE MURPHY B.S., M.S. EE, 85, 89 Presented by Dr. Zhihua Xu, Division Chair Terence (Terry) Murphy is the Chief Operating Officer of DRS Technologies, Inc. Immediately preceding his appointment as COO, Mr. Murphy served as the president of DRS s Network and Imaging Systems (NIS) Group, which is a leading provider of integrated missioncritical information solutions and a world leader in electro-optical/infrared sensor systems. He has previously held the DRS roles of president of the Reconnaissance, Surveillance and Target Acquisition (RSTA) Group; vice president and general manager of the Infrared Technologies Division; and vice president of Technical Operations for the RSTA business unit. Prior to joining DRS, Terry worked for Texas Instruments and Motorola, where he focused on commercial markets in a variety of design, development and management positions. Terry served four years in the United States Navy where he was an instructor at the Naval Nuclear Power School in Orlando, FL. A native of Central Florida, he earned both a bachelor s degree in electrical engineering and master s degree in mathematical science from UCF. He also holds a master s degree in electrical engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, GA. Terry has also completed the management training program at Texas Instruments, as well as the Executive Leadership Program, which was jointly developed by Columbia University and the Imperial College London. Terry is an active member of the Association of the United States Army, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, and SPIE, the International Society for Optics and Photonics. 6 UCF College of Engineering & Computer Science

7 Department of Industrial Engineering & Management Systems Distinguished Alumnus Presented by Dr. Waldemar Karwowski, Department Chair THOMAS O NEAL M.S., Ph.D., IE, 96, 05; MBA, 96 Dr. Thomas (Tom) Patrick O Neal is the Associate Vice President for Research and Commercialization at UCF. Since 1975, Tom has been an active member of the business community in Florida. He founded his first start-up company at age 18, which he successfully operated until pursuing a full-time college career. Tom then entered the high-tech business arena as a project engineer for a computer manufacturing company. Prior to joining UCF, he served as a Technology Specialist and Financial Director for a $40 million project with the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency for Florida s state university system. Tom joined the UCF staff in 1991 as the associate director for the Center for Research and Education in Optics and Lasers (CREOL). In this capacity, he was responsible for the business and administrative functions of the center. The center evolved into one of the top centers for education and research in optical sciences and engineering. Tom has assisted in the formation of numerous spin-off companies for technologies developed at UCF. In 1999 he founded and established the UCF Technology Incubator and serves as the founding director. The UCF Business Incubation Program has expanded to eight locations under his leadership. The incubator was named the Incubator of the Year in 2004 and Incubator Network of the Year in 2013 by the National Business Incubation Association (NBIA) for which he currently serves as vice chair of the executive board. Dr. O Neal earned his Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering, Master of Science in Engineering Management and Master of Business Administration from the University of Central Florida. 4 th Annual Alumni Honors Reception 7

8 Department of Materials Science & Engineering Distinguished Alumnus AJAY KALE M.S. MSE, 99 Presented by Dr. Sudipta Seal, Interim Department Chair Ajay Kale is a process technology development group leader at Intel Corporation, the world s leading semiconductor manufacturer, located in Portland, OR. He has worked for Intel for 10+ years and his area of specialty is lithography/patterning. His group is responsible for the process development and pilot manufacturing of all of Intel s newest technology nodes as well as the subsequent process transfer to other Intel factories. He has also led defect metrology teams and operations to achieve record breaking output and yields in a fully loaded factory. He holds a master s degree in Materials Science from UCF and a Ph.D. in Materials Science from the University of Florida. 8 UCF College of Engineering & Computer Science

9 Department of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Distinguished Alumnus Presented by Dr. Challapalli Suryanarayana, Department Chair PAUL MIRABELLA M.S. ME, 75 Paul Mirabella started working in the aerospace business for McDonnell Douglas and later at Martin Marietta. He joined GE Medical Systems (now GE Healthcare or GEHC) in 1976 as a program manager for the emerging CT Business. He holds four patents in this area, the most recent of which was awarded in In January 1987, Paul was promoted to general manager, Global Ultrasound, which he led until his promotion to general manager, Global CT in November During this time, GE s global market share grew significantly and in July 1992, Paul was once again promoted to general manager, Global MR. In January 1999, Paul was promoted to president and CEO, GE Healthcare - Americas with full operational responsibility for the U.S., Latin American and Canadian markets. In September 2002, Paul was asked to take back the entire Americas Commercial responsibility in addition to retaining his responsibilities for the Global Healthcare Services business. In January 2004, Paul was promoted to president and CEO, Global Diagnostic Imaging and Americas Region adding responsibility for Global X-Ray, MR, CT, PET, Nuclear and the Workstation and Application Software businesses. Paul held this position until he retired from GE in March Paul earned a master s degree in Mechanical Engineering at UCF. Paul also holds a Master s of Business Administration from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. 4 th Annual Alumni Honors Reception 9

10 UCF College of Engineering & Computer Science Distinguished Alumnus Award ANGEL RUIZ B.S. ET, 78 Presented by Dr. Michael Georgiopoulos, Dean Angel Ruiz is head of Ericsson s Region North America. He has worked in the telecom industry for more than 30 years and has been with Ericsson for more than 20 years. He is one of the more legendary names in the wireless industry. Angel became head of the organization in North America in Under his leadership, Ericsson has become the number one provider of telecommunications solutions and services in North America. The North American region is leading the world in LTE network deployments. Angel has been instrumental in this technology leap, assuring the link between Ericsson s research and development resources to deliver products and services that enable operators to launch 4G. He joined Ericsson in 1990 and has held a variety of sales and managerial positions within the company, including heading up the global account teams for Cingular/SBC/ BellSouth (now AT&T). Before joining Ericsson, Angel held various positions with Sprint, AT&T and Bell Atlantic. In 2010, Angel was awarded the Gifford K. Johnson Community Leadership Award from the University of Texas at Dallas for supporting and enabling activities such as research with UT Dallas faculty and participation by Ericsson executives on numerous advisory boards. In 2007, Angel was named the CECS Professional Achievement Award winner by the UCF Alumni Association. He holds a bachelor s degree in electrical engineering from UCF and a master s degree in management science and information systems from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. 10 UCF College of Engineering & Computer Science
