7 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY & SWOC ANALYSIS Executive summary of the College: Seshadripuram Education Trust is one of the oldest and premier education institutions in the state of Karnataka located at the central part of the capital city of Bangalore. The SET, since its inception in 1930, has been managed by the eminent educationists, distinguished personalities (such as Mr. Subbanna, Mr. Gopal Iyengar and many others) with a life commitment for education, who have laid solid foundation. Today, SET runs 26 institutions offering a variety of courses providing education to more than 20,000 students from Nursery to Post-Graduation. The trust is managed by a team of philanthropists with high social standing and professional eminence. Seshadripuram Evening Degree College, accredited in 2005 as one among the handful of colleges to do so, with B Grade, is now volunteering for the second cycle reaccreditation, submitting its RAR 2013, a landmark document that faithfully conforms to NAAC s guidelines and unerringly records its testament of beliefs and pursuits of excellence during the post accreditation period. The college established in 1971, is one of the affiliated college of Bangalore University. It is one of the leading evening colleges in the city of Bangalore, having "Commitment for Quality and Needy" as its mission. It serves the cause of needy students, who seek job at the early stage of their education to support their families and are interested to pursue their education. The college realizes that national development requires a strong human capital base to be produced through an education system which fosters thinking, creativity, social awareness and a strong sense of social responsibility. The college attempts to create a challenging teaching-learning environment which equips students with the knowledge and skills required to face the challenges of the globalised environment without sacrificing the core values of Indian culture. It prides itself in its cultivating of a warm, cordial and mutually-supportive relationship with all its stakeholders. Centrally located in the heart of the city, the college is situated in a campus of 2 ½ acres and, being surrounded on all four sides by roads, enjoys excellent natural lighting and ventilation. In the years since the first NAAC accreditation, and keeping in mind the recommendations of the Peer Team, the college has seen a steady and concerted improvement in infrastructure. During the post accreditation period, the flooring has been changed, fans and glass boards fitted in all classrooms, sliding windows have been installed, and new rooms for extension activities provided, a state-of-the-art seminar hall and audio-visual room constructed. The Management has been extremely supportive in bringing about these changes, realizing that to be competitive; adequate facilities and a comfortable environment for both staff and students are to be provided. The faculty of the college is a balanced combination of experience and youth. Working hand in hand with the senior aided teachers is a band of committed and enthusiastic teachers appointed by the management. Many of them have qualifications beyond the mandatory post-graduation and have attained higher degrees like Ph.D, M. Phil and MBA. The faculty members are always eager to update their knowledge and regularly attend seminars, workshops and conferences. Their endeavor is encouraged by the Management who extend financial support. Faculty members are also active in presenting papers at academic events. Many of their articles are also published in reputed journals. The performance appraisal of the college is summarized below: 1. Curricular Aspects: The college always upholds the motto of Quality education at an affordable cost, in its graceful realization of the vision of liberation and empowerment of the weaker section in the society through knowledge and value based holistic instruction. The college offers 3 UG programmes affiliated to the University, under self-financing category as well as government grant-in-aid. New selffinanced UG programmes, B.Com, BA (Psychology, Journalism & Optional English) and B.Sc., with Computer Application, Statistics and Mathematics were introduced due to high demand. Faculty participation in orientation/refresher courses, involvement in workshops and seminars of Regional / National / International level, and special guidance on ICT teaching technology, have resulted in sufficient exposure to recent advances and changes of the curriculum innovative initiatives. The University designs the curriculum and the constituent college has to implement it as per the guide lines. Term wise division of it, the college does not play any role in curriculum design. However, the college makes efforts to realize goals and missions of its own by effectively implementing designed by the University. For the effective planning, implementation of the curriculum the college undertakes various measures for planning and implementation of it, such as preparing academic calendar for curricular, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities, preparing time table, teaching plans by individual teachers etc. It also includes evaluation, student centric methods of teaching and so on. There is freedom for the students in given framework to select a special subject at degree level. The syllabus is completed as per the expectations of the University and to the satisfaction of the students. The feedback from the student is obtained both orally and in written formats and other stakes holders communicate their feedbacks at appropriate meetings. 2. Teaching, Learning and Evaluation: The college ensures transparency and accountability in student admission processes by adopting first come first serve basis without conducting any entrance test. The students from all categories represent the admission process, ensuring equity. Most of the students studying in the college are from Karnataka and rural places. A few students from other states have also been admitted to the college. The students belonging to diverse economic and social backgrounds are admitted without any discrimination. The college has availed the girl students of opportunity to higher education. Teaching learning process has undergone significant changes in curriculum and evaluation process from the first accreditation. The college has introduced more and more students-centric teaching methods. The college has introduced a new course in B.A stream with Psychology, Journalism, Optional English, and the new stream B.Sc., (B.Sc., in evening college is now a reality) with Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science during the post accreditation period. In order to maintain teachers quality the college has undertaken various measures like encouraging the faculty to participate Faculty Development Programs. To make the teaching more meaningful and effective the college has arranged student enrichment programs like lecture series by eminent teachers and by organizing seminars and workshops for the faculty & the students. For the selection of faculty and the staff the college follows the guidelines & procedures laid down by the UGC, the Bangalore University and the state Government. The evaluation methods have also undergone significant changes since The pattern of evaluation has been introduced by the University. From the academic year , due to revision of syllabus of undergraduate courses, the university conducts annual examination of 100 marks and internal assessment marks system has been replaced by 3 point scale grading system. The college conducts pre-final examination of 90/100 Marks for each course. The marks obtained in the term examination are converted to the proportion of internal assessment marks / grades. In addition, assignments, practicals and projects are assigned to the students as per guidelines by the University. Research, Consultancy & Extension: Growth and development of higher level research has invariably become one of the major focuses of the college in recent years. The college provides opportunities to the staff members to attend and to present papers in national and international conference. The Sister Institution of the college is conducting Global M.B.A Courses of International University to promote research activities. Free consultancy to tax payers of the college staff and to senior citizens is provided by the Department of Commerce. Other Departments also provide free consultancy, such as counseling etc. Extension activities such as organization of Blood Donation Camp every year, women Empowerment activities and NCC camps for trekking and NSS Camps and Rural camps are also being conducted. 4. Infrastructure & Learning Resources: The college has adequate infrastructure facilities to meet the needs of student, teacher and staff. There are sufficient classrooms are, and indoor hall, and open Air Auditorium, Conference Hall, Closed Auditorium, Principal Office, Administrative office, Library, Physical Education Department, Gymnasium, N.S.S. room, Examination Room and Canteen. In addition to these, the college has a Ladies Rest Room, The play-ground though not owned by the college for outdoor games and required facilities for indoor games are available. The library holds books, Journals and other learning material to enable the student and the faculty to acquire information, knowledge and reference skills and INFLIBNET. The college intends to expand those facilities in the future to meet, future development. ICT facilities are available for the faculty and the students. The community has free access to the library facilities. Sufficient seating arrangements have been made for the students in the library. There is ample place for parking of vehicles. In future the college aims to have separate reading room for the faculties, the students and the community. 5. Student Support & Progression: The faculty members of the college try their level best to achieve good results, by supporting the students to achieve their goals. The college supports its students by providing various scholarships, freeships and financial assistance, specific support services, providing entrepreneurial skills, providing facilities to participate in extra-curricular and co-curricular activities, training to take up competitive exams, counseling services, career guidance and placement, addressing the grievances through grievance redressal cell, prevention of Seshadripuram Evening Degree College Page 9

11 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY & SWOC ANALYSIS harassment through anti-sexual harassment committee and anti-ragging committee, serving the needs of senior students of the college through alumni association etc. The college is an evening college, and all the students are employed either part time or full time. Hence, the progression of students to higher education is very minimal. However, necessary guidance is provided by the faculty members to the students who decided to go for higher education. Campus interviews are being arranged for the students of final year courses, not only in the campus but also in the campus of sister institutions of the college. A few of the students are appointed through campus interviews. Though the college is an evening college, the college is organizing sport activities to the students. To provide a showcase to the hidden talents of the students cultural competitions are also conducted by the college. Students of the college have also provided with the facility to participate in NSS & NCC activities. Magazines published by various departments and by the college and by the trust provide an opportunity to the upcoming writers among the students. The outstanding students who won the trophies in inter-collegiate, inter-university, district, state and national level tournaments are given merit certificates, mementoes, sports kits and cash awards. Besides they are provided with additional special training by the physical director by providing diet in the physical fitness camps in their free hours every year, the college conducts Intramurals for boys and girls and the winners and runners are given prizes on the College Day celebrations. 6. Governance, Leadership & Management: The college has been working to sustain the motto Quality education at an affordable cost, for over all development of the students and to develop the gross enrollment for the student to provide quality education, to promote scientific temper and to inculcate cultural values. The college is keen about regular update of the teacher s knowledge and skills. To encourage and depute to participate in conference, seminars, workshop and refresher courses aimed at enhancing skill. Major efforts are taken to monitor effective and efficient financial resources to be availed as internal and external audit. Some major resources of institutional funding are fees, Scholarship of SC/ST s, and Management Assistance etc. Various Committees are constituted every year for the effective functioning of the College. Staff Council consisting of all the Heads of the Departments is the central organizational unit which meets frequently and takes decisions on the issues that matter into the way of functioning of the college. The Meetings of the Managing Committee and College Committees are held regularly. There is a flexible time schedule for conducting meetings to discuss the items of significant that matter the situations from time to time. The Staff Council Meetings are frequently held regularly and the agenda pertaining to the items: Coverage of syllabus, Conduct of Examinations, Student s Attendance, Library Books, Students and Staff Grievances and Redressal, Staff Service matters, Financial matters, Performance of the students, Participation of students and staff in extension activities are discussed. The college has established IQAC to assure the quality of the college. The IQAC is the highest authority to make the policy and the monitor the implement of it. The IQAC communicates internal and external to stakeholders at appropriate opportunities. 7. Innovations & Best Practices: The college has made efforts to make the college campus eco-friendly. The college has conducted the activities like rain water harvesting, and tree plantation. Since the Evening College is meant for working students the innovative scheme like earn while learn is best adopted. Renovation of the entire building like front elevation, construction of compound wall, parking slot, classrooms flooring, new fiber boards, quadrangle granite flooring, renovation of closed auditorium, open air auditorium and newly constructed seminar hall has been done. The college has organized workshops for the faculty as a part of development program. Health check-up and Mega Blood Donation camps are being conducted in the college for the benefit of the students, parents and the society at large. Career guidance and counselling centre provide necessary guidance to the students, to overcome their inferiority complex, etc., ipomo campus mobile learning, a system of utilizing the technology at the maximum, are some of the best practices of the college. The college constituted Internal Quality Assurance Cell as per the guidelines of NAAC for quality assurance within the existing academic and administrative systems. The function of IQAC is to fulfil the suggestions made by the Peer Team during the previous assessment. Keeping in view of the suggestions made by the Peer Team, the IQAC monitors the academic, administrative and developmental activities regularly. A master plan for five years is also prepared by the IQAC in consultation with various Departments and College Management. Review meetings are conducted to review the progress of the activities. Keeping in view the socio-economic environment changes, the college expanded its physical and academic facilities for the inclusive growth of the students during the post accreditation period. The College is located in the area of 2 ½ Acres of land in the heart of the City with south facing entrance, being surrounded on all four sides by roads, enjoys excellent natural lighting and ventilation. 2. The College has well experienced, highly qualified and dedicated faculty members. The Alumni students of the college are well settled in their profession and some of them in Media, national level sportsmen and in Government administrative post. 3. Alumni of this college are Academicians, Politicians, Teachers, Lecturers, Management members of educational institutions and public servants in various departments. Some of the present faculty members are IQAC Coordinator are former students of this college. 4. The College has well equipped Computer science laboratory for Science subjects and laboratories for Psychology and Commerce. 5. The College has well established library consists of 17,482 reference books and text books. 6. The quadrangle of the college has well developed and open air auditorium with Sodium vapor Lights and beautiful greenery. 7. The College has a sports room with a qualified Physical Director for indoor and outdoor games for practicing Body building and weight Lifting sports. 8. Weaknesses: 1. The college is an Evening College which is meant for working students hence the students can attend only for the lecture class, extra activities for students or any program for students is necessarily has to be done during Sundays or on holidays. 2. As a large number of students are working and commuters of Public transport and Bicycle and most of them depend on transport facility, the students are not able to concentrate on their studies and showing less interest in extracurricular and cocurricular activities: NSS, NCC, Games & Sports, Literary and Cultural activities. Additional Weakness: Not Sufficient use of ICT by faculty, No major / minor research projects to be submitted, No individual Departments for Faculties. Opportunities : 1. As the college has a large campus area, there is a wide scope for constructing new buildings for Library, Sports Wing, NSS, NCC and recreation for staff and students. 2. The vision and mission statements are communicated to students and parents through the college website, prospectus, induction programme, departmental newsletters and annual college magazine. However, the time table is modified on case to case basis, so as to make the students are more benefited with additional classes, etc., Innovative techniques such as class room seminars, project reports, LCD presentations, case study, group discussions, special lectures on current issues and field study are being vastly used by the teachers, thereby inculcating self-confidence and the ability to think independently among the students. To make the learning process more interactive, the practices like pre-reading activates in languages and literature courses, competition, question answer, oral presentation, seminars, posters preparation etc., are used in teaching. The teaching session begin with warming up of questions on relevant topic for more participation and session gears up with deeper information with its application in day to day life. Practical tests through ipomo and oral tests are conducted for some course like functional English and Commerce. Field and Industrial visits are organized by Economics, Commerce, History, Political Science & language departments.
