Faster broadband and better connectivity for Shropshire will enable... Better Business opportunities Better Home experience Better Public Services Better for Everyone Fibre broadband will bring Shropshire s predominantly rural economy into the digital fast lane, revitalising small towns, villages and hamlets connecting communities to stimulate growth and innovation, in the long-term, ensuring local people don t suffer from a digital divide.
The Commercial partnership 1 Council investment = 2 partner investment Digital technology can enable SMEs to unlock as much as 18.8 billion in incremental revenue nationally* *Booz and Co - This Is for Everyone The Case for Universal Digitisation
This Programme in summary Faster broadband to over 62,000 rural homes and businesses in Shropshire by end of March Mbps or more to all homes and businesses 24Mbps or more to the majority of homes and businesses This means 93% of premises (131,000) having access to fibre broadband (when combined with commercial rollouts) In partnership we continue to look for opportunities to work with communities in Shropshire to extend fibre coverage further.
Our focus High level of expectation Robust and accountable governance model Clear communication Evidence based benefits realisation Ensuring value for money throughout Programme

The Deployment Challenge Building a Broadband Future Brendan Dick - MD BT Regions
It s a big job! Building a robust, future-proofed infrastructure is physically and technically challenging Work on the programme will continue until End Spring 2016 We ll reach more than 62,000 premises in predominantly rural or very rural locations The project will deliver the best coverage and speed possible for the money available.
Building on our commercial roll out 22,000 field engineers in Openreach, and still recruiting More than 15m premises have access to Openreach s fibre network across the UK We re already rolling out in Baschurch, Oswestry, Shrewsbury, Bridgnorth, Ludlow and Market Drayton: more than 60,000 premises, of which 28,000 are already live And more than 70 service providers are enabled to offer fibre services that use Openreach s network.
Work has already started (Phase 1 of 9)
Keeping you informed of progress Two main sites to check for updates Information on this programme and links to all other commercial roll outs info on this programme and BT s commercial roll Now showing postcodes covered by programme and exchanges under evaluation respectively. We expect to announce the first communities that will benefit this Autumn
The Big Build
The Engineering task Building a Broadband Future Kim Mears - Director Openreach
The Technology ADSL Broadband Copper from the exchange to the premises. Fibre to the Cabinet (FTTC) The fibre connection goes to a powered cabinet in the street. The final connection to premises is on copper. Fibre to the Premise (FTTP) The fibre connection goes all the way from the main network to the premises.
Keeping you informed of progress Make you sure you visit the showcase here today
Our Deployment Strategy The decision of where to deploy SFBB is based on: - Technical and physical feasibility - Existing Infrastructure Exchange equipment, ducts, copper and power - Clustering of premises Always look to maximise the number of lines served in the earliest timeframe (value for money) - Best alignment of local engineering resources Flexible approach = Greatest coverage, highest speed, lowest cost, shortest timescale = best value for money
More detail on the process Liaison with Highways Power Supply Network rearrangement Surveys Planning: Detailed planning of ducts/cable runs/boxes/locations Production of planning packs Spine Build Exchange Connectivity Schedulin g Local Planning Applications / Wayleave applications FTTP Manifold Build Initial Planning assessment Order Power supply Submit orders for kit Cabinet Build Exchange Infrastructure Build Commission & Test Phase 2 Phase 3...
A Major Engineering Project 9 phases to end Spring 2016 Approximately 1300 Km fibre Around 350 cabinets In excess of 100 engineers Upgrade of 115 exchanges Embracing technology innovation Enough fibre to join Shropshire to the Swiss Alps
Exploiting the broadband opportunity Building Better Broadband Natasha Innocent - BDUK
BDUK Changing lives Building a broadband future for Business Better broadband provides small businesses with new opportunities to grow and make efficiencies by working smarter E-commerce. Currently only 1/3 of SMEs transact online. Booz + Co estimate there is an opportunity for SMEs to unlock up to 18.8 billion additional revenue if they were all transacting online Other opportunities include: Cloud computing. Video conferencing. Sending and receiving huge files. New opportunities to market and network BUT businesses may need to build their digital skills to fully benefit
Higher online maturity Small businesses segmented by digital maturity Lower online maturity 1. Shooting Stars 2. Emerging Advocates 3. Static Surfers 4. Enthusiastic Chasers 5. Deliberate Disconnected Do a lot online and have a website with higher level functionality. Fairly advanced but either have a basic website, or don t use the internet for the highest level tasks. Fairly advanced in their use of online technology but don t have a website at all. Do low to moderate level business tasks online and have a basic website. not online (no use + no website) or only use the internet for very basic tasks (e.g. Google search.) (28% of participants) (17% of participants) (17% of participants) (17% of participants) (20% of participants) Source: Lloyds/Go ON UK Maximising Online Engagement with SMEs & Charities (Optimisa) Sept 2012.
Shropshire Case Study One Shropshire-based telecoms business is already seeing the benefits of the existing fibre commercial deployment using the internet to help provide vital medical advice The introduction of further superfast broadband deployment across the county of Shropshire will allow local telecoms business, Fluid Network Solutions, to expand their hosted telephony network into the more rural areas potentially benefiting hundreds of organisations and customers. Fluid currently provides telecom services for businesses and organisations, including the county s out of hours medical services, run by Shropdoc. There are future plans to improve the service for patients and surgeries across Shropshire by building a hosted voice network which relies on quality broadband services. Rob Tolley, of Fluid Network Solutions, said: At the moment, surgeries and businesses local to the main towns in Shropshire are getting the most from the hosted telephony, whereas in the more rural organisations, whilst still available, it is a little more challenging due to the broadband network not being as strong. The building of this superfast broadband network will be the backbone of the voice network service, which will provide a host of major benefits to end users.
Building a Broadband Future for Home Better broadband also opens up new opportunities, choice and convenience for people and families, including: Opportunities to work from home; start up new businesses and learn new skills Opportunities to save money and access services in new ways. This is especially important with an ageing population. More social networking with family, friends and communities of interest. Our online friendships are increasingly as important as off line networks. BUT research from the BBC demonstrates that some people do not have the digital skills or confidence to fully benefit

Building a Broadband Future for Public Services Better broadband also provides public bodies with opportunities to transform the way they deliver services. This is not just about efficiencies it is also about better services SNOW Improving health, well-being and quality of life. NHS direct is a heavily used and popular service which allows people to help themselves Better access to services and information. We increasingly live in a 24/7 world where people expect to be able to find out what they need to know when they need to know it. Saving money by moving services online means services can concentrate on the value added
