4 Introduction - Section 2 Our District Mission: In partnership with parents and community, the mission of the NCSD is to ensure that all students develop the knowledge, skills and character necessary to achieve their highest potential and to be productive members of an ever changing global society. Our District Vision: Developing Each Student's Potential With A World-Class Education Our District Goals: 1. The Novi Community School District will ensure that each student will make no less than one year's growth in one year's time. 2. The Novi Community School District will ensure that all students achieve at a high level. (There will be no achievement gaps.) 3. The Novi Community School District will evaluate and enhance opportunities for students while maintaining a minimum 10% fund balance. 4. The Novi Community School District will improve organizational quality and customer service by creating common standards, systems, and principles. 5 Vision and Goals - Section 3 The vision for technology in the Novi Community School District is based on a picture of instruction, which has been changing since the implementation of the first Technology Bond Project of The pyramid graphic represents the district s 4 Goals and how these goals build upon each other to support learning. Technology is an integral part of all the steps in this pyramid. It is not looked at as separate component but something that is integrated and supports all of these goals. Technology continues to be a significant force in enabling educators to make needed improvements in instruction; however, technology has not been the goal of these changes. Rather technology can be the significant instructional tool in the hands of teachers and learners, making possible new and improved strategies for learning that will lead us to our goals. Learners continue to be much more actively involved in the learning process, constructing their learning activities, monitoring what has been learned, and participating in real-life and simulated experiences. The use of higher order thinking skills, personal and group problem solving and goal setting has become much more common. Skills for life-long learning continue to receive stronger emphasis with teamwork, leadership and personal fulfillment as important areas of learning. The role of teachers continues to change towards that of expert learner and a partner in learning, with less emphasis on directing and disseminating information. This trend will continue, and teachers will spend more time monitoring student learning, verifying mastery, and managing increased information that is more complex as well. Relationships with home and community will be more evident. Learning will be seen as a community responsibility, as well as that of the school staff. Collaboration and communication will be increased. Page 5

6 Information will continue to expand at a rapid rate with access to information becoming more important than ever. Those who have access to information and possess the skills and resources to obtain it will have a significant competitive edge in the work world. Technology - Part of the Culture: Essential Tool for Learning Technology is a powerful and essential tool in the education process for both students and staff of the Novi Community School District. It has become an integral part of all areas of curriculum at every level of instruction. In addition, technology has become an integral process tool in both instruction and management. The application of technology is an important factor in improving student performance and achievement, increasing staff productivity, and assuring efficiency of the day-to-day operations of the school system. Rationale This technology plan is provided as the current guideline for the appropriate and effective use of technology in Novi schools. The plan provides the framework for maintaining and improving the district technology infrastructure, equipment, organization and human resources vital to improving student and staff learning. Executive Summary During the past more than 20 years, District staff has brought to fruition a series of comprehensive technology implementations with close to 27 million dollars invested. These projects have put in place a Voice, Video, and Data infrastructure, hardware and software, and a technology department for support and maintenance. The projects were completed with the coordination and cooperation of district committees of technology and various consulting groups and integrators. Committees met on a regular basis with administrators and consultants to discuss issues relating to the implementation of technology within the district. Students and staff have worked to implement the use of advanced technology within the core curriculum. Committees have met to organize, process, and present information on the integration of technology into the curricular objectives. The teacher continues to be the most critical factor in effective curriculum integration of technology into instruction. Proper training and support is a continuing critical need. Teachers will only be able to continue to enhance curricular concepts with technology with support and training. Improving student-learning competency with technology tools, managing required record keeping, creating effective lessons, improving peer collaboration and utilizing world-wide network resources continues to be a challenge and will take a very large professional development effort. Technology support staff are in place for the maintenance of equipment in the buildings. A District technology department has also continued to work with the administration of technological activities to ensure the continued integration of technology within the curriculum. The District Director of Technology has worked to coordinate the efforts of the District Technology Support Personnel and to take the lead in expanding and continuing the vision and strategic plan for maximizing the use of technology. 7 Goals 1. Technology Standards for Students, Staff and Administrators Students, instructional staff and administrators will demonstrate technology integration by applying the METS-S Technology Standards for Students and the NETS national standards for Staff and Administrators into all curricular areas. The district believes students will need to be lifelong learners, who are able to use tools and learning processes to gain control of their learning, build knowledge using higher order thinking skills and effectively communicate with a variety of people and audiences. 2. Professional Development The district will work to improve staff competence and delivery of instruction with technology and their ability to implement technology into curriculum and assessment through professional development activities. The district believes that technology is a significant instructional tool and when appropriately placed in the hands of teachers and learners it will create and make possible many new and improved strategies for learning. The role of the teacher is changing toward that of an expert learner and a partner in learning with much less emphasis on directing and disseminating information. The addition of Technology Coaches to our cohort of instructional coaches will be an import component of our professional development efforts 3. Classroom of the Future Technologies - Mobile Devices and Google Apps The district will work to provide technologies in the classroom to enhance and expand the delivery of instruction by staff and students. Personal mobile devices will be studied and installed in classrooms where it is most appropriate and will enhance instruction and learning. A BYOT (Bring your own technology) program will also be piloted. These district or personal devices along with the district s adoption of Google Apps for Education will provide us with tools to advance learning for our students. 4. Total Cost of Operations The district will provide the most effective and efficient technical system support possible for the best price through the most effect total cost of ownership possible in order to facilitate the effective use of technology in our district. To meet our goals with Technology, the district will continue to do much more with fewer dollars. To continue to purchase new and replacement technology the total cost of ownership of the technology will be critical to ensure that the technology will continue be put to effective use. Page 7

8 Evaluation of our Goals Technology is an area that is forever changing. New technologies are arriving, daily, monthly, and yearly. At the time this plan was developed we could only work with what we knew of technology at that time. As a three year plan we know there will be new technologies available to us that do not exist at this time while this plan is still in effect. Because of this, as a district we feel that this plan must be a living document that will be updated and evaluated as technology changes. The District Technology Committee will meet annually to evaluate our goals and our progress in meeting those goals and update the plan as necessary. Goal 1 Technology Standards for Students, Staff and Administrators As an educational institution we have sets of standards for our students and employees. These are our guidelines to help us know the proper direction to follow. The technology standards are something that we are working to fully integrate into everything we do with learning and teaching. A very important part of implementing the standards will be the planning for professional development to give the staff the knowledge and skills required. Another part of Technology and the Standards is Internet and computer safety. The district is working to implement the practices and activities of the Michigan Attorney Generals Cyber Safety Initiative at It is critical as teacher work with students and their parents that online safety is stress in everything students do while online or working with many of the other mobile devices that connect them with the world. All of these efforts will be overseen by our Technology Director and our technology coaches. Questions to be answered while planning for technology implementations Essential Learning: What do you want to do and what will students learn? What standards and benchmarks will be covered? Safe use of technology and the Internet. Proper use and safety online Assessment: How will I know that the technology has made a difference in student learning? Are my students practicing safe online behaviors? Activities: How will technology be used? What strategies will be used that best integrate technology and the content? Process: What materials/resources are needed? (Hardware, software, training, etc.) Management: How will the technology be managed in the classroom? (Large group, learning center, small group, on-line, or independently) See Appendix B for detailed list of Standard for Students, Teachers and Administrators Technology Standards - Students Novi Community School District follows the METS Standards (Michigan Educational Technology Standards) for our students, teachers and administrators. The technology foundation standards for students are divided different grade level categories. Grades PK through 2, Grades Three through Five, Grades Six through Eight, and Grades Page 8

9 Nine through Twelve. Standards within each category are to be introduced, reinforced, and mastered by students. These categories provide a framework for linking standards to performance indicators within the Profiles for Technology Literate Students. Teachers can use these standards and profiles as guidelines for planning technology-based activities in which students achieve success in learning, communication, and life skills. Student Standards Implementation Plan The district curriculum committees and instructional and Tech coaches will review in coordination with the Technology Committee the standards and their impact on our curriculum and instructional practices. They will also work to create an implementation plan for professional development activities with staff to be able to implement these standards into teaching. The groups will also create a timeline for when these activities will take place and a projected budget. Evaluation of Student Standards Representatives of the Technology committee, the coaches and district curriculum committees will meet at the end of each school year to review the progress that has taken place with the integration of the student standards. Examples of students work, teacher lesson plans and other documentation and authentic assessments will be reviewed by the committee members. A review of each curriculum area and the progress made will be done. Training recommendations for the summer training schedule and the next year s technology training classes will be made. Technology Standards - Teachers Novi Community School District has adopted the NETS-T Standards (National Educational Technology Standards) for our Teachers. Teacher Standards Implementation Plan A committee of teachers, tech coaches and administrators will work with our district Professional Development Committee to develop a plan, timeline and budget for the training of staff on integrating technology into the teaching and learning process. The activities that are recommended will be able to be integrated into our district professional development days and the work of our instructional and tech coaches along with part of our staff s professional development hour s requirements. Evaluation of Teacher Standards Representatives of the Technology committee, Professional Development committee, and district curriculum committees along with the Director of Technology and the tech coaches will meet at the end of each school year to review the progress that has taken place with the integration of the teacher standards. A review of each curriculum area and the technology skills required by staff to implement the student standards and the progress made will be done. Evaluations of lesson plans, reviews of classroom observations and professional development evaluations from training sessions will be evaluated by the committee. Training recommendations for the summer training schedule and the next year s technology training classes will be made from these along with the needs from the classroom and from skills needed for the use of technology and the management requirements of our teachers. 10 Technology Standards - Administrators The district has adopted the NETS-A Standards (National Educational Technology Standards of Administrators) for our Administrators Administrator Standards Implementation Plan The Director of Technology will work with the Superintendent and the district Administrative Counsel to develop a plan, budget and timeline for helping administrators meet these standards. The administrators meet on a monthly basis on Tuesday mornings. A tech tips component has been added to those administrative council meetings each month. The plan for those Tech Tips will be to have the Administrators participate together in the 21 Things for the 21st Century Administrator - Evaluation of Administrator Standards Representatives of the Technology committee and district administrative council will meet at the end of each school year to review the progress that has taken place with the implementation of the administrator standards. A review of the progress made will be done. Training recommendations for summer training and the next year s administrative meetings will be made. AG - Cyber Safety Initiative The District will be working to implement the Michigan Attorney Generals Cyber Safety Initiative for all grades, K-12 as part of our plan. Goal 2 - Professional Staff Development Staff development is part of every goal in our plan. There are many areas that need to be addressed. Staff development is ongoing both during the school year and also during the summer. In view of the changes in technology over the last year, there is a continuous need to update the skills of the teachers and administrators so that they can work effectively with students. PSD is done both at the district level, as well as the school level. At the school level, there are formal and informal staff development activities with the tech coaches, Director of Technology, media staff member and the tech-para available to assist on site with both technical aspects, and also help on the integration of curriculum. Organization of training throughout the year, as well as the summer, is one of the functions of the Director of Technology and his staff. Staff Development has been accomplished in many ways so far and will continue to be provided by the following types of activities. Summer Tech Days The Tech Coaches will offer half day classes on the topics that have been requested by staff and or by the District Director of Technology related to current initiatives. District Professional Development Days We have offered and will continue to offer one full day of topics related to technology and technology integration at one of our full day PD days. Conferences and Seminars Many of our staff attend MACUL and other technology events or technology related events. We continue to encourage and work to make that possible. Peer to Peer Our Tech Coaches and Media Specialists make it a very important part of their jobs to support staff on a daily basis on the integration of technology into the students learning. Our Tech Coaches, Media Specialists and other teacher experts are also supported by our district technology support staff to assist in the training on hardware and applications on a daily basis. 11 With the current and future budget restraints we will continue to use as many of these options as possible and continue to explore online opportunities and other methods of providing the training and skills necessary to accomplish our goals. Evaluation of Professional Staff Development Part of every technology class that is offered by the district is a class evaluation. This evaluation covers the instructor, the facilities, the content and the value of the class and how it has affected the staff s ability to perform their job and if it has increased their knowledge. These evaluations are collected by the district technology office and reviewed with the district technology committee. These evaluations are an important part of the yearly evaluation of our training and will help us plan as we progress through our project. Other data will be collected from teacher lesson plans, project ideas and authentic assessments made on student projects. These items along with Principal observations of staff and their recommendation of areas of need will be part of our evaluation. Staff development activities by all our staff are logged into a system called Kalpa. This system records and tracks all staff development time from district sponsored activities to any and all other activities, conferences, etc. that staff are involved with. This system will allow us to pull reports on the types and amount of time, along with numbers of staff involved with these activities. This will allow us to analyze what our staff is doing and adjust our training to meets the needs of our staff more appropriately. Goal - 3 Classroom of the Future Technologies - Mobile Devices and Google Apps The district is currently implementing programs for Google Apps for education and mobile devices. The mobile device project involves 2 carts of 30 ipads in each of the K-4 buildings along with the 5th grade and 6th grade buildings. We also have a 1:1 ipad program for a 5th grade team of 60 students and 2 teachers. These students have been assigned an ipad that they use in school and can take home for use when not in school. This team of students and 2 teachers will stay together and for 6th grade for this 2 year pilot. Our Special Education program also has provided ipads to many of the special education rooms across the district. We have also provided them to our administrators and curriculum coaches. Along with this we have implemented the Google Apps for Education tools for all of our students and staff. The staff members involved volunteered and make up a committee that will be involved in the evaluation, future implementation and training for staff in the district. This group along with the building and district tech committees will work to develop a final plan for implementation and the professional development that will take place for district staff. Evaluation of Classroom of the future Goal A committee will be put in place to monitor and evaluate the progress and direction of this project. The committee will consist of the Assistant Superintendent of Academic Services, Director of Technology, representatives of the building technology committees along with the teachers of the pilot classroom of the future group. Progress of the implementation will be documented and meetings will be held to monitor and revise the implementation process as needed. Page 11

12 Goal 4 Support and Cost of Operations It is vital to improve capacity and use of technology that there be a trained and experienced cadre of technicians to maintain and administer technological activities. The district continues to look at the personnel needed for the support of the technology and understands the need to maintain and preserve the large investment that has been made. To accomplish this, the district has put in place the following personnel listed below. Our goal will be to continue to study how technology is being used and what has been implemented and how best we can support that with limited budgets. The following is a list of current staff. Members of the technology support personnel are professionals and paraprofessionals with training and experience in the relevant technical areas. These members are permanent and regular employees of the Novi Community School District. The technology support personnel are responsible for making their technical expertise readily available to staff for resolving hardware/software issues relating to hardware and software installation trouble-shooting and repair of all technology-related devices data backup and recovery hardware and software upgrading hardware and software inventory records all network operations and modifications The technology support personnel consist of district specialists in various areas of technology. They provide timely support in all activities relating to the acquisition, installation, maintenance and use of technological devices within the district. Members of the district technology support personnel include Director of Technology Technology Systems Support Manager Network and Desktop Engineer ITC Secretary 4 Technology paraprofessionals Instructional Technology Coaches Director of Technology The Director of Technology leads the District in expanding the vision and implementing a strategic plan for maximizing the use of technology at all sites. The Director of Technology responsibilities are to: head the District Technology Support Team by serving as chair of the District Technology Committee facilitate communication between the various members of the District's technology committees and subcommittees coordinate and oversee the Instructional Technology staff. 13 address the needs of each school and distribute tasks to the appropriate support personnel explore the existence of State and Federal mandates concerning technology and ensure that the District is in compliance. This is done in conjunction with the Assistant Superintendent of Academic Services oversee hardware and software purchases to maximize funding. This is done in conjunction with the Assistant Superintendent for Business and Finance and the Assistant Superintendent for Instruction publicize and provide training opportunities in technology and coordinate teacher in-service training coordinate District and site in-services in technology and keep staff informed as to various training opportunities share with members of the District Technology Committee information learned through evaluating these inservices in order to continually improve the quality of training available in the District collect samples (on paper and on video) of effective academic programs that include the use of technology ensure hardware security (anti-theft) propose hardware upgrading propose software upgrading participate in the building technology committees chair the District Technology Committee and lead the Technology Committee in fulfilling its mandate as described in the District Long Range plans share with members of the District Technology Committee information learned through evaluating these inservices in order to continually improve the quality of training available in the District Technology Coaches The tech coaches play an import role in the implementation of technology into the instructional and learning process. The tech coaches are part of the department of instruction and work for the Assistant Superintendent of Academic Services. They play a valuable support role for the technology department The Technology Coaches responsibilities are to: Work with the Director of Technology to implement professional development on the integration of technology for instruction Work with Curriculum coaches Technology Systems Support Manager The Technology Systems Support Manager heads the effort to maintain, repair and replace hardware at all sites and work in conjunction with Media Technology Paraprofessionals (as described below) on all problems which cannot be solved at the site. The Technology Systems Support Manager works closely with the Director of Technology to maintain and implement technology across the district. The Technology Systems Support Manager responsibilities are to: coordinate the installation of new equipment into the existing technology environment provide service of all hardware-related problems document all modifications to hardware and network equipment used within the District provide necessary hardware support in deploying school and District wide area networks keep hardware inventory records coordinate the installation of new software into the existing technology environment provide service for software-related problems Page 13

14 document all modifications to system, application and network software used within the District provide necessary software support in deploying school and District wide area networks provide data backup and recovery ensure data security relating to network resources Network and Desktop Support Engineer The Network and Desktop Support Engineer works under the supervision of the Technology Systems Support Manager. The position provides support and knowledge to the support manager and the entire technology support department. The Network and Desktop Support Engineer s responsibilities are: the installation of new equipment into the existing technology environment to provide support to the techs for service of all hardware-related problems to document all modifications to hardware and network equipment used within the District provide necessary hardware support in deploying school and District wide area networks the installation of new software into the existing technology environment to provide troubleshooting for software-related problems to document all modifications to system, application and network software used within the District to provide necessary software support in deploying school and District wide area networks to coordinate data backup and recovery ensure data security relating to network resources (Server & Internet access) ITC Secretary The Instructional Technology secretary will coordinate the ITC office activities. The ITC Secretary responsibilities are to: answer phone and other inquires process purchase orders and process items when they arrive maintain technology databases organize office activities and information schedule district in-service training monitor the district video system assist in maintenance of district inventory assist in the operation of the ITC keep software inventory records provide telephone support to district staff provide support to the Technology Paraprofessionals Technology Paraprofessional Provide assistance to the Technology Department and District staff to ensure smooth operation of the District and individual building s technology. The responsibilities of the Technology Paraprofessionals are to: staff the district help-desk support building hardware and software Page 14

15 inventory building technology and maintain inventory of hardware install and update software on computers transfer files between computers connect equipment to the district network assist staff members with software and hardware problems act as building liaison for assistance with phone system and voice mail support the operation of the building video head end equipment support of video camera carts assist staff and students with and Internet access assist with voice mail and telephone problems support media center technology support all staff in the operation of the district technology Evaluation of Support and Cost of Operations The district technology staff and district technology committee will work together to evaluate the support and the TOC of the district s technology. Curriculum Integration - Section 4 Goal 1 of the district is our goal for the integration of curriculum. The district feels by working to integrate the tech standards across all the core curriculum areas along with the other enrichment curriculum that technology will truly be an integral part of the teaching and learning process. The process to achieve this will be in many parts. The Director of Technology along with the Assistant Superintendent of Academic Services and Director of Assessment to work to coordinate and integrate the technology standards into the districts other curriculum. As part of the ongoing curriculum process, each curriculum area has a committee that meets yearly to review and revise that curriculum. Staff that will support this process will be our Technology Coaches and our Instructional Coaches and Content Area Leaders Over the next 3 year cycle of curriculum revision the Director of Technology will meet and work with those committees to integrate the standards and various projects and appropriate technologies to be part of the curriculum areas. This work is ongoing and is being entered into the districts Rubicon Atlas system where all district curriculum will reside. Technology integration will be part of all the documentation in this system. This schedule will be established by the Assistant Superintendent of Academic Services and Curriculum and Director of Assessment along with the Director of Technology. The standard used will be as stated in our Technology Goal 1. These are the METS standards. As an integral part of this each buildings staff, coordinated by the Media Specialist and the building technology committee will be working with the following set of questions as they look at their technology purchases and the curriculum that has been established and or revised. (Large group, learning center, small group, on-line, or independently) Student Achievement - Section 5 Our focus on improving student achievement is evidenced by our implementation of the Atlas Rubicon system in coordination with Oakland Intermediate School District. The district curriculum is being entered by our staff and maintained by a group of Content Area Leaders with expertise in the specified content areas. Teacher collaboration time each week during Professional Learning Community (PLC) time enhances each teacher s depth of understanding of the current curriculum and the achievement needs of individual students. The District has a strong commitment in the use of technology to improve curricula and instruction. The installation of Intelligent Classrooms, document cameras, projectors, student response systems (clickers), and interactive smart boards are just a few of the ways we have integrated technology into daily instruction. ipad Mobile device carts along with laptop carts and classroom computers are available to all staff. Instructional staff also use online software, streaming videos, and other multimedia learning materials which enhance the already rich content in the classroom. To determine student academic progress, NCSD uses a combination of local common assessments, NWEA testing and state assessment programs. The Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP) is used to assess each student in grades 3-9 based on the Michigan Curriculum Framework ( MEAP measures year-to year student achievement for elementary and middle schools while the Michigan Merit Examination (MME) is used to measure student achievement at the high schools. Since the passing of the federal No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) of 2001, Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) is also used to measure academic progress for the district and each building within the district. Other indicators, such as the number of students who participate in the assessments and graduation rate for high schools, are also considered in the AYP calculation ( Page 16

They are helping with the sharing of this new technology by holding special after school or during school visitation by the other staff in their building to help with awareness and to finalize our plan for implementation in the district. The district has also implemented the Google Apps for Education tools and has a Google Domain of Novischools.net. All Students and staff have had accounts created for this system. Along with the Google Apps the school district has in place a Moodle system hosted by Oakland Intermediate School District. We have already been training our staff and have many secondary teachers are using the Moodle system to enhance their existing courses. This system is available 24x7 and is open to access from home to our students, their parents and staff. We will also continue to explore Google sites and Edmodo as systems for teachers in K-6 or 7-8 for creating an online component for their classes. Combining the Google Apps tools and Moodle or systems like Edmodo or Google sites give the staff a variety of tools to extend their classrooms into a 24 hour learning environment with not only access to the students but to the parents and even the community when appropriate. Plans are to continue to work with the secondary staff and also start projects with our elementary staff to find ways to take advantage of this tool to enhance and extend learning. The district has also invested in a Digital Video system by VBrick. This is a system where our own student and teacher created video content can be stored and delivered for instructional use. We can also digitize existing content with have the rights for on this system to make it much more flexible to deliver that video content over the district s IP network and in the future out to the students and community over the Internet. 18 Parental Communications, Community Relations - Section 7 Novi has always believed in the importance of communication collaborative participation with our parents and the community. We have provided many opportunities for our community to access our technology. We have just completed a new district website that has many expanded areas for information for our students, parents and community. The Technology department has a site within the district site where information is shared on technology in our district. Also many of the ongoing news stories on the site have and will continue to feature technology happenings in the district. Parents and community members have been part of our long range planning that has included technology along with the Technology Bond project where community meetings gave parents and community members many opportunities for discussion and feedback. Below are listed some examples. As a district we will continue to work with the community to share, collaborate and communicate. District Communication Mailing Lists, District and School Web sites, Local Access TV channel on the community cable network. Each school has a mailing list that parents can join to receive newsletters and important information on activities and events happening at their child s school. These may go out once a week or more often as the need arises. Our district and individual schools have also created Twitter and Facebook pages as a way to communicate with our parents and students for quick and timely announcements. Community Education classes - Our Community department offers a wide range of classes for students, parents, community members, and seniors after school and in the evenings. There are over 20 different classes offered at this time from ComputerTots to AutoCAD to Creating a Homepage on the Internet. Adult Education - The school district and our Adult Education program in collaboration provide many opportunities for access and use of the technology. The Adult Education program holds classes on computer application in our High School computer labs and has access to the Internet through those same labs. The district and Adult Education program will continue to explore the many opportunities that our district technology has to offer. Collaboration - Section 8 Partnerships - All of our schools have partnerships with businesses or organizations in the Novi community. Many activities have been held in the district where we have shared and worked together with our partners with technology. Our partners range from the Providence Medical Center in Novi with job shadowing and a local dentist to our community banks and our Chamber of Commerce. The emphasis of the partnerships has always been career awareness of which a large part is the awareness of technology in careers. F.I.R.S.T. competition and our Intier Automotive partnership. F.I.R.S.T. ( is a technology competition and partnership between schools and industry to promote teamwork and engineering. The FIRST mission is to design accessible, innovative programs to build self-confidence, knowledge and life skills while motivating young people to pursue opportunities in science, technology and engineering. Intier is an international supplier of automotive interior seating and closure systems. I.S.D., County and State Our district participates in many state and county opportunities to save money on our technology purchases by working with the REMC Bid program, OCSBO and with MICTA. For our Internet access we have been a partner with Oakland Intermediate School District and ONE Coalition that provides us with High Speed Internet and five channels of educational programming, special programs and professional development. The district also participates in the Access Michigan online databases offered by Oakland Schools and the state. Our staff has also taken advantage and will continue to participate in the wide range of professional development offerings provided by Oakland Schools. Page 18

19 Professional Development - Section 9 Professional Development is one of our goals of this plan. As part of this goal the district is planning to implement Instructional Technology Coaches to enhance our already existing team of instruction coaches and Content Area Leaders that support the core curriculum areas. Our existing 6 full and half time instructional coaches provide support and PSD to all of our staff in the different curriculum areas. Part of the PSD that goes on all year long integrates technology into what they are working on to improve instructional practice. There are also a group of full time teachers who are paid to work some extra hours that are out Content Area Leaders - CAL group. They also work to integrate technology into all the work they do on curriculum and the implementation of our Atlas Rubicon curriculum system. The Addition of Instruction Technology Coaches to this group will even further the integration of technology by these tech coaches working directly with staff year round and also support our instructional coaches and CAL group. See the time line in Section 4 and our goals 1 and 2 for further information. Professional Development Supporting Resources - Section 10 Director of Technology and Technology Coaches Tech coaches are certified teachers from our district who work with their teaching peers to help to continue the integration of technology into instruction. Technology Committees Members of the technology committees are professionals with experience in the integration of technology in the classroom. Participants of these committees consist of Novi Community School District employees along with various citizens of the city of Novi. The technology committee members are responsible to: provide leadership for technology at all buildings ensure consistency of plan development and implementation of technology at individual buildings coordinate the participation of community members in building activities provide human resources to be used in schools and at buildings as mentors, in-service leaders, or technology experts communicate with educational leaders the needs of the business community for graduating students District Technology Committee The District Technology Committee coordinates and supports the implementation of the District Technology Plan. The Director of Technology acts as chairperson for the district committee. Members of the committee include two staff members and the Media Specialist from each school, students and parents. A School Principal is also included. District administrators participate at key times and otherwise are kept updated as to developments. The responsibilities of the District Technology Committee are to: ensure consistency of plan development and implementation of technology at individual buildings provide communication and dissemination of information between and among District sites provide leadership for technology at District sites coordinate the outreach to community and business for financial and human resources Page 19

20 Building Technology Committee The Building Technology Committee develops, coordinates and supports the implementation of the building technology plan. Members of the committee will include appropriate departmental and grade level representation, as determined at each building. Parents and students will be invited to participate. A building administrator will participate at key times and otherwise be kept updated as to developments. The responsibilities of the Building Technology Committee are to: provide leadership for technology at the building facilitate the writing of the school technology plan ensure consistency of plan development and implementation of technology in individual classrooms and/or offices provide communication and dissemination of information between and among staff members and the District Technology Committee provide local site in-service opportunities coordinate hardware and software purchases with the district committee and the ITC. coordinate the participation of community members in site activities For materials and other resources we have a SharePoint site in place for links and materials for things like SmartBoards and Document cameras. We also keep a site for Mobile learning with ipads. We also use twitter and to send out updates and links to resources that are available for staff to follow. Infrastructure, Hardware, Technical Support and Software Infrastructure Needs/ Technical Specification and Design - Section 11 The citizens of Novi have passed three bond proposals starting in Dec. of 1992 up to May of 2007 to be spent on technology enhancements, renovations, district infrastructure, and hardware. That infrastructure was completed during the summer of 1996 and has been enhanced and maintained since then. These bond issues have built a district wide fiber optics infrastructure connecting all the facilities in the school district. This network supports the Voice, Video, Data and Wireless network that is currently in place. The fiber backbone consists of single-mode fiber between each building MDF, and multi-mode fiber connecting all of the IDF's within each building. The Network has also been expanded by our participation in the Oakland County OneNetwork. This network is a countywide network that is currently supporting data and video between all the districts in Oakland County with connections to outside the county networks. The district receives its Internet services through this network from a connection to the Internet from Oakland Intermediate School District. Overview of Hardware and Software At the beginning of this tech plan the district has the following technology in place throughout the district.
