2 DISTRICT GRANTS District Grants fund small-scale, short-term activities that address needs in your community and communities abroad. District Grants can be used to fund a variety of projects and Activities, including Humanitarian Projects, including service travel and disaster recovery efforts; Scholarships for any level, length of time, location, or area of study; Vocational Training Teams, which are groups of professionals who travel abroad either to teach local professionals about a particular field or to learn about their own. You have a lot of freedom to customise your service projects. There aren t many restrictions, as long as your District Grant supports the mission of The Rotary Foundation. Applications for District Grants are called at the Rotary Foundation Seminar held in November each year. Clubs have approximately 3 months to make application, with funds available from 1st July the following year. Projects must not be commenced until AFTER the District Grant application has been approved. 2
3 GLOBAL GRANT CERVICAL CANCER VACCINATION The Rotary Clubs of Bribie Island and Boroko PNG, together with support from Districts 9600,9630,9640, 9685, 9710, 9790, 9820 (Aust) 6190,6540,6710, 6840 (USA) have combined to submit a Global Grant application to The Rotary Foundation to enable the vaccination of 28,000 female students aged 9-13 years in Papua New Guinea against cervical cancer, currently endemic throughout PNG. The Global Grant application - created by IPDG George Grant following an approach from PNG Presidents-Elect - with a total value of US$329,500 has been approved by The Rotary Foundation, following a thorough investigation by a cadre visit to Port Moresby and subsequent review by the Trustees of TRF who praised the amount of planning, community needs assessment, etc. and were in full support of this great project. IPDG George took the idea of the project to his class of District Governors, both in Australia and USA, and was successful in achieving funding support. The Global Alliance for Vaccinations and Immunisations (GAVI), predominantly funded by Bill and Melinda Gates, also has given outstanding support to the project. The normal cost of the vaccine per dose is US$125. GAVI have guaranteed supply at a price of US$4.60 per dose for a minimum of five years. There are two doses of vaccine required, six months apart, for each of the 28,000 girls. The project would not be viable without the generous support of GAVI. The PNG Dept. of Health has completed a Memorandum of Understanding with the PNG Dept. of Education to allow a vaccination program in the schools over 2 years. Rotary will work with the PNG Government to formulate an educational HPV and community awareness program. OUR Rotary Foundation in action! 3
