4 H i s t o r i c B u i l d i n g s Air conditioning historic buildings can give rise to many problems. Significant differences for example, exist between the heat retention characteristics of ancient and modern construction materials. Many materials used in the past can absorb heat better than their present day counterparts, enabling solar heat to be retained within the walls as latent heat and releases and 38 radiated internally during winter. Historic building structures however, are often severely weakened by age and have neither the strength nor space to accommodate heavy central plant or extensive ductwork systems. Care must also be taken to preserve priceless contents such as furniture, paintings, carpets and wall coverings etc, which may demand the provision of different temperature set points from room to room. Great care and skill was required in refurbishing the historic structure with emphasis placed on locating the outdoor units out of sight and earshot. Similar consideration was afforded to concealing the complex piping runs and ductwork linking the indoor units throughout the building. 11 ASHRIDGE COLLEGE B E R K H A M S T E D, U K 45 This 12 th century building is probably one of the oldest on the site and has been restored and adapted to provide a building of historic interest whilst meeting the modern day demands of a high profile management college. The Grade 1 listed building was not only subject to stringent local planning laws but also the close scrutiny of the English Heritage. The VRV system not only had to cool and heat but had to be sympathetic to the 12 th century barn conversion. The end result has been outstanding and the building is now considered as the flagship of the college. 30 I ndustry & Transport There is a growing number of industrial applications in which the provision of a clean, air conditioned working environment can have a significant impact on the overall efficiency of industrial production processes and their associated product storage facilities.
