7 DENTAL ASSISTANT Be among the first dental professionals trained in Qatar What are are Dental Assistants? Dental assistants are important members of the oral health team working next to the dentist to take care of a patient s teeth. They have the knowledge to do lab procedures, use dental tools and communicate using dental terminology. Dental assistants also teach patients how to take care of their teeth. 9 EMERGENCY MEDICAL SCIENCE An exciting career where you can be the first trained person to arrive in an emergency. What are Emergency Medical Technicians? Emergency medical technicians and paramedics are first on the scene to help people who are sick and injured. Travelling by ambulance or helicopter to bring patients to hospital, they are trained to perform many medical procedures. The Emergency Medical Science program is modelled on the U.S. Department of Transport National Standard Curricula. Students learn through practice labs and two clinical sessions with Hamad Medical Corporation. Get the fitness level you need through health & wellness classes. When you graduate, you will be confident in your skills as a paramedic. Your Future Emergency medical science is a new field in Qatar. You could work with healthcare providers in a variety of settings, such as cities, remote areas, hospitals, air ambulance or military service. Emergency medical technicians also work in industrial zones such as oil & gas and chemicals. As soon as CNA-Q offered paramedicine, I switched my career. 9

11 ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH FOOD SAFETY & INSPECTION Help ensure that Qatar s food supply is safe to eat. What is Food Safety & Inspection? Food Safety & Inspection involves the handling, preparation and storage of food. This helps to prevent food poisoning and illnesses transmitted by food. Inspectors visit places like restaurants and food packaging plants to ensure that their food is safe. Choose CNA-Q! Sign up for our Food Safety & Inspection program and learn about food-related risks and safety laws in Qatar. Gain hands-on experience in the laboratory, then join us on field trips to places like grocery stores and commercial kitchens. To prepare you for the workforce, you will complete a work place exposure and a work term. Your Future Food safety is a very important issue in our day-to-day lives, especially in hot climates like Qatar. Yousef Noman Class of 2007 Employer: RasGas Position: Industrial Hygienist, conducting health risk assessments in areas such as food services, noise monitoring, heat stress and ergonomics In the beginning, I had no idea about environmental health; I thought it meant environmental science. As I learned more about it, I found myself liking it more every day. 11

Occupational Health & Safety (OH&S) seeks to protect people while they are at work. Sometimes risks affect physical safety, like when people use heavy machinery. Sometimes risks affect health and wellness, such as illness or stress. A big part of OH&S involves educating people to promote safety in their own workplaces. Choose CNA-Q! In our Occupational Health & Safety program, learn about the workplace hazards and risks that are faced in major industries in Qatar. A work term at the end of your program will ensure you gain the professionalism and interpersonal skills you need for your career. Learn about safety in the workplace Your Future The OH&S field is growing along with Qatar s major industries, such as oil and gas and construction. Workplaces need your expertise to protect the health and safety of their employees. 15 Learn about Health Risks ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH PUBLIC HEALTH Protect the people of Qatar from environmental dangers such as poor air quality and disease. What is Public Health? Public Health manages threats to the health of a community and its people. It can range from environmental issues like water quality to social issues such as smoking in public. The goal is to prevent health risks rather than treat them, through health education, risk assessment and law enforcement. Choose CNA-Q! Gain hands-on experience in the laboratory, then join us on field trips to production plants, treatment facilities and more. To prepare you for the workforce, you will work with a qualified health inspector during two work terms. Learn about the Effects of Pollution Your Future Public health is a growing field, as environmental issues are important for both people and businesses. Tougher laws and demand for trained professionals have created many new career opportunities. 17 MEDICAL RADIOGRAPHY TECHNOLOGY Use modern x-ray equipment to help people who have injuries and illnesses. What are Medical Radiography Technologists? Medical Radiography Technologists use x-rays to produce an image of a body part or body system. They use advanced technology to diagnose illness and injury in their patients. Some radiography technologists specialize in areas such as computed tomography (CAT scan), angiography (heart and blood vessels) and pediatrics (children). Choose CNA-Q! Medical Radiography is designed to meet Qatar s growing need for radiography technologists. You will gain hands-on experience through practice in a lab and clinical sessions with Hamad Medical Corporation. By the time you graduate, you will be able to perform x-ray procedures with confidence. Your Future Qatar needs more radiography technologists to meet patient needs! Your expertise is required to operate x-ray equipment and to help patients. You could work at a hospital, clinic, research centre or educational institution. Job opportunities also exist in research, education and medical equipment sales and services. 19 PHARMACY TECHNICIAN Help people get the medicine they need to enjoy good health. What are Pharmacy Technicians? Pharmacy technicians work with pharmacists to give patients the medicine they require. When patients receive a prescription from a doctor, they bring it to a pharmacy to get their medicine. Pharmacy technicians ensure the patient s safety by reviewing the patient s history and carefully following procedures. They also promote the patient s healthy lifestyle and well being. Practice on the same computer system that is used in Canadian pharmacies. A community pharmacy work term and a hospital pharmacy work term ensure that you have the experience you need to join the workforce. Your Future With so many pharmacies in Qatar, you will have many job opportunities! Pharmacy Technicians work for both government and private industry. You will work in a hospital pharmacy or a community pharmacy. With additional company training, you can also work with pharmaceutical manufacturers. 21 PRE-NURSING Help people in your community enjoy good health and quality of life. What are Nurses? Nurses are the largest group of healthcare professionals in the world. They work with people of all ages and backgrounds to help them improve their health. Since nursing is so broad, nurses have a lot of knowledge about healthcare. They must be able to communicate well and make important decisions quickly. Choose CNA-Q! CNA-Q s Pre-Nursing program is a preparatory program to prepares students to meet the entrance requirements of a university nursing program such as the University of Calgary-Qatar s Bachelor of Nursing program. Students will participate in course areas including Science, Math, Computer Studies, Communication and an Introduction to Nursing. With low student-teacher ratios, hands-on lab sessions and small group learning sessions, Pre-Nursing offers a student-centered learning environment. Your Future Our Pre-Nursing students usually go to the University of Calgary - Qatar s Nursing program. Due to increased specialization and the worldwide nursing shortage, you will have many opportunities upon graduation. Nurses work in a variety of settings, including hospitals, schools, public health clinics and industry. They can also specialize in heath, research, education and many other areas. 23 RESPIRATORY THERAPY Be an expert in special care for patients with heart and lung problems. What are Respiratory Therapists? Respiratory Therapists (RTs) help patients when their heart and lungs are sick. For example, they set up life support for patients who cannot breathe on their own. RTs work on a team and have to think quickly in stressful situations. They must have good people skills to help patients learn how to take care of their heart and lungs. Choose CNA-Q! In addition to classroom learning, our students do assignments and clinical sessions at Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC). By working at a hospital, you learn how to care for adults, children and babies. Small class sizes ensure you get the attention and practice you need to enter this important field. Your Future When you graduate, you will be one of the first RTs trained in Qatar. Hospitals needs RTs in areas such as nurseries, pediatrics, intensive care units and emergency departments. RTs also work in community settings, such as asthma clinics, sleep disorder labs and educational institutions. Opportunities also exist in medical equipment sales. I also want a job where I can help others rather than sit back and wait for the end of the work day. 23

24 COLLEGE OF THE NORTH ATLANTIC - QATAR ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS 1. High School completion with an overall 60% average in: English Language - Grade 12 level Academic Mathematics - Grade 12 level or Advanced Math - Grade 12 level Two Science courses selected from Biology, Chemistry, Geology, or Physics. 2. Successful completion of the Skills Placement Assessment. Note: Applicants who do not meet the Science requirement may be admitted to the Pre-Health Sciences curriculum. Pre-Health Sciences provides upgrading in the basic skills required for successful completion of health training programs. Note: Applicants who are 19 years of age or older, and who do not meet the entrance requirements above, may be considered on an individual basis. Medical Assessment All Health Science students (except pre-nursing) must complete a medical assessment. Any student who is not medically fit will have to withdraw. Any costs of completing the medical assessment will be the student s responsibility. Students sponsored by Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) will have the medical assessment completed as part of their contract obligations with HMC. The College will assist other students to complete the medical assessment process during the first semester. Students must possess a valid standard First Aid certificate and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (Level C) certificate (or equivalent) to be eligible for a Diploma from the School of Health Sciences. FURTHER STUDIES Learning at School and at Work All CNA-Q students are ready to enter the workforce when they graduate. However, some graduates use their education as a stepping stone to a university degree. An articulation agreement allows you to apply your college courses to a university degree program. Our Pre-Nursing program prepares students for possible entry into the University of Calgary - Qatar s Nursing program, where graduates receive a Bachelor of Nursing degree. CNA-Q s School of Health Sciences is currently exploring agreements with other universities in Canada, the U.S. and the U.K. for other program areas. College of the North Atlantic in Canada also has articulation agreements with additional universities that may apply for CNA-Q graduates.
