2 PhD Doctor of Philosophy Business Administration Open University Malaysia The proram offers opportunities to a small roup of candidates of hih caliber to pursue advanced study and research leadin to PhD in Business Administration from the Open University Malaysia (OUM). Functionin as OUM s Learnin Center in Sri Lanka, the Graduate School of Manaement (GSM) oranizes course work and research for candidates to complete their deree requirements in a flexible time framework. The first proram of this nature in Sri Lanka, oranized and presented by the pioneers of hiher education in manaement in Sri Lanka Reasonable proram fees which can be paid in installments Entry Requirements (a) Master s deree in business administration or related field; OR (b) Bachelor s deree with first class honours in business administration or in a related field from an institution reconized by the OUM University Senate; Students are required to reister for a Master s deree in a related field; and after passin the related qualifyin examination, the candidature may be upraded to the PhD proram. Admission Procedure The admission procedure includes: a) Application form duly completed: Application forms are obtainable from the School or downloadable from the website. Duly completed applications should accompany (i)a brief statement of research interest, (ii) a copy of CV, (iii)a copy of the educational certificates at raduate and postraduate levels, (iv) evidence of work experience, and (v) copies of a sample of research/publications, if any. b) An Interview: A comprehensive interview with the applicant to assess his/her preparation for doctoral study. Deree Requirements The deree requirements adopted by the Open University Malaysia consist of course work and research. Course work includes two compulsory courses, namely, Research Methodoloy, and Doctoral Seminar in thestudent s field of study. Each course will require 15 hours of face-to-face sessions. Part I: Compulsory courses Research Methodoloy in Business, and one of the followin: Doctoral Seminar in Manaement Doctoral Seminar in Marketin Doctoral Seminar in Finance Doctoral Seminar in Economics The course work will be delivered by qualified faculty in interactive classes at the GSM as well as throuh e- learnin.

3 Part II: Thesis Proposal & Research After completin the required courses (PART I) learners will bein the research and thesis work (PART II) under the uidance of one or two supervisors (internal and external). The learner must successfully defend his/her proposal before proceedin to PART III. Areas of specializations in research/thesis: Manaement (Human Resource, Oranisational Behaviour, Stratey, Comparative, Entrepreneurship, etc) Marketin (Service, Consumer Behaviour, Stratey, etc) Finance (Investment, Bankin, Portfolio Manaement, etc) Economics (Industrial Economics, International Trade, Development, Tourism, etc.) Applications for the doctoral proram may be submitted any time durin the year, thouh the enrolment for study will be decided upon only three times a year, as follows: March enrolment July enrolment November enrolment Applyin Anytime Applicants may visit the website of GSM ( or call GSM Office to find out information reardin time table for closin dates, interview, reistration, and commencement of studies. Proram Fees and your Budet Part III: Thesis Examination Durin this stae, the student will continue his/her work on the thesis. When the learner has completed the thesis and is ready for examination, an examinin committee will be appointed to assess the thesis. The learner will be examined in a Viva Voce session for the final decision. Schedulin of Study and Research Study sessions for course work are usually scheduled for evenins and week-ends. A session is usually 2½ hours duration and candidates may have two or three sessions per week durin the first 8 months to cover essential course work. When visitin academics conduct the sessions, there may be extended session hours, mostly over Saturdays or Sundays. Meetins with supervisors may be scheduled with flexibility durin day time or evenins on mutual areement. Applicants should make their study budet by considerin the followin commitments: (a) Proram fees: These fees will cover - Approximately two-weeks of study in Malaysia durin Year I (air travel, accommodation, transport and seminar costs are covered); Course work teachin by local and forein faculty; Course materials; Examinations; Thesis proposal development, thesis supervision and examinations; Refreshments at GSM durin sessions. (b) Related budet items to be met by the candidate: Additional personal costs of tourin Malaysia; Books, journals, readins etc., Research costs; Convocation fee (dependin on the option of attendin it in Sri Lanka or Malaysia).
