2 A MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR Thank you for considering the Faculty of Education at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) for your graduate-level education. We offer both full- and part-time studies in the field of education and digital technologies, leading to the degrees of: :: Master of Arts (MA); :: Master of Education (MEd); and :: Graduate Diploma (Type 4). Education as a concept is rapidly changing in its objectives, content and modalities. The role of technology in this dynamic process has been, so far, both deep and broad. It has transformed the way we think, work, live, socialize and learn. Our social economy is moving from industrial models to collective intelligence development. As this fundamental shift occurs, there is a need for specialists in education who understand both the global and specific roles and impacts that technology has on learning. Society also needs these individuals to be in positions where they can offer the kind of informed leadership that is necessary to prepare future generations for an ever-evolving reality. At UOIT, the graduate programs in Education are designed specifically to prepare you to be future leaders and specialists in learning and technology, and able to meet the needs of your constituents within this social context. Our Master of Arts, Master of Education and Graduate Diploma are unique and leadingedge in both their objectives and approaches to learning online. Not only do these programs deal with the most recent issues around the interactions between digital technology and education, but the professors do so using approaches that favour collaborative learning, co-construction of knowledge and peer tutoring. Finally, all of this is designed with you in mind and built on the university s institutional strength in digital technology and the Faculty of Education s focus on learning with technology. 3 PROGRAM STRUCTURE In the MA and MEd in Education and Digital Technologies programs, students take a selection of required core and elective courses to complete a total of 30 credits. As part of the 30 credits, students in the MA program complete a thesis and in the MEd students complete a project or portfolio. For the Graduate Diploma, students complete four courses in education and digital technologies for a total of 12 credits. Students enrolled in all graduate programs in Education will take their courses online with a strong component of video conferencing meetings. Using this technology, students get an opportunity to speak directly with their professors and colleagues in full video and sound, and with multimedia capabilities, on a weekly basis. All of this from the comfort of their own home, anywhere in the world. 3

4 ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS In addition to the general admission requirements for graduate students at UOIT, students applying to the MA, MEd or Graduate Diploma in Education and Digital Technologies programs must meet the following minimum program-specific requirements: :: Hold a four-year honours degree from a Canadian university or a three-year university degree and a Bachelor of Education or its equivalent from a recognized institution; :: Overall academic standing of at least a B (grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0/4.3 scale), with a minimum B in the last two full-time years (four semesters) of undergraduate work or equivalent; :: Submission of one certified copy of each previous undergraduate and graduate transcript. It is the student's responsibility to provide a certified English translation of the transcript if the original is in another language. Applicants may be required to submit a brief description of the courses listed on their official transcripts or provide a copy of the relevant calendar where they are listed; :: A minimum of two letters of reference from persons having direct knowledge of the applicant's academic competence. Academic references are preferred, however professional references will be accepted. Letters of reference should come from individuals under whom the applicant has worked or studied closely; 4

5 :: Proof of English proficiency is needed from those applicants whose first language is not English. Please note that applicants to the MA, MEd and Graduate Diploma programs must achieve a slightly higher score than those required for some other graduate programs at UOIT. (Exact scores can be found through the Future graduate students link at and :: A one-page Statement of Interest outlining the applicant s objectives in undertaking graduate studies. Applicants may describe career aspirations or plans, specific research interests (if known), and any experience relevant to their interests. If a potential thesis supervisor has been contacted, he or she must be identified. Please note: An admission interview may be required. APPLICATION PROCESS AND DEADLINES Applications and admissions to all Faculty of Education graduate programs are done through the Graduate Studies office. Applications are completed online at For more information on how to apply, please consult the Graduate Studies website. While the MA and MEd programs have two intakes each year, there is only one application deadline. For equal consideration of your application, please apply no later than early February. (Exact dates are listed through the Future graduate students at Applications will only be accepted after these deadlines as long as spaces are available. 5

6 PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONS MASTER OF ARTS IN EDUCATION AND DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES (30 CREDITS) The MA program includes a graduate thesis. Students are required to take six, three-credit courses and a 12-credit thesis. :: Principles of Learning (required for all MA students); :: Research Methods in Education (required for all MA students); :: Advanced Research Methods and Design (required for all MA students); :: Six credits from Cluster 1 (listed below); :: Twelve credits from graduate thesis; and :: Three other course credits. MASTER OF EDUCATION IN EDUCATION AND DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES (30 CREDITS) The MEd program is available with either a portfolio or a project option. Students with the portfolio option are required to take nine, threecredit courses, together with the three-credit digital portfolio. Project option students take eight courses together with a six-credit research project. MEd students must also take one of the following completion options: :: Graduate research project; or :: Graduate portfolio. MA students will take the following completion option: :: MA graduate thesis. 8 GRADUATE DIPLOMA IN EDUCATION AND DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES (12 CREDITS) The Graduate Diploma is a high-quality professional development opportunity that provides educators with an alternative form of professional development when they do not wish to pursue a full Master's degree but want to take some graduate-level courses. The diploma program has the same admission requirements as the MA and MEd. The courses are taught by the same faculty members as within the degree programs. Students must complete four courses within the field of education and digital technologies for a total of 12 credits. The courses must be completed in a three-year period with a minimum passing grade of a B-minus in each course. The following courses are offered: :: Digital Literacy: Theory, Practice and Research; :: Educational Technology and Communication; :: Leadership and Technology; :: Learning with Technology; :: Learning Tools; :: Online Technology in Education; :: Special Topics in Education and Digital Technologies; :: Technology and the Curriculum; and :: Technology Diffusion in Education. 8

9 Graduate Diploma graduates who wish to be considered for admission into either the MA or MEd can have up to six of their 12 credits counted toward their Master's degree. Students already in the Graduate Diploma program who are interested in transferring to either of the Master's programs can do so through the Faculty of Education Graduate Program office. If the transfer is approved, all credits will be applied towards the Master s degree instead. In this case, a graduate diploma will not be issued. Students who have completed a Master s degree and wish to enrol in the Graduate Diploma program may transfer up to six credits toward the diploma, depending on the courses they have taken in their Master's program. 10 WHERE YOUR GRADUATE-LEVEL EDUCATION CAN TAKE YOU These research-based programs are intended for future leaders and specialists interested in education and digital technology. They are designed to prepare you to meet the needs of your constituents within this social context. For example, elementary or secondary teachers and principals wanting to offer leadership in projects involving digital technologies in their schools and school boards, college-level instructors, individuals from professional fields such as nursing or other professional areas involved in training and education, or anyone with a personal or professional interest in teaching and learning in a digital context can develop a highly sought-after expertise in this field. These programs can also lead to careers as online or distance learning specialists in colleges or universities, directors or coordinators of e-learning services, e-learning designers or project leaders for boards and higher-education institutions. For some individuals, they can ultimately lead them to consider doctoral studies and a research position in this new and rapidly developing field. STUDENT COMPUTER REQUIREMENTS Hardware requirements In order to be able to take advantage of all the resources available for this program, all students require access to a computer, preferably a laptop, with these minimum characteristics: :: Operating system: Windows XP or newer; or MacOS X 10.5.x or newer. :: Video capabilities with either a built-in or external-compatible WebCam; and :: Audio capabilities with appropriate combination headset/microphone (external speakers are not acceptable as they tend to cause feedback noise). Internet access Candidates must have access to high-speed Internet service, preferably at home as schools tend to have firewalls that can block many key features of these courses, such as videoconferencing. Basic software requirements: :: MS Office or OpenOffice: Word; Excel; and PowerPoint. :: Web Browser: Internet Explorer; Firefox; or Safari. Additional software A set of basic software packages will be made available online for use by students, free of charge, and each course instructor will also supply additional information about whether course-specific software is required. Although most software will be free, it is highly probable that some software may need to be purchased by students. The cost would never represent more than the average normal cost of books associated with such studies. Required computer skills Given that all courses will make use of many of these resources, students will be required to possess a minimum technical skill set that allows them to use the necessary technology. This means that before the start of classes, all students should be comfortable with the use of their computer as well as the basic software listed above.
