1 Pharmaceutical Waste
2 Introduction PHS Wastemanagement provides a highly professional clinical waste disposal service to organisations up and down the UK. As the NHS supplier of choice, we provide an unrivalled level of service, backed up by expert industry knowledge. With a carefully structured national network, PHS Wastemanagement ensures that services are provided UK-wide and with minimal mileage. In this way, and by promoting reusable containers, pharmaceutical waste disposal from PHS is as sustainable as possible. Waste Type Classification Colour Coding Disposal Method Infectious Clinical Infectious clinical waste that poses a risk to human health, such as contaminated swabs, dressings and wipes Incineration Infectious Clinical Infectious waste that can be treated prior to disposal, such as contaminated swabs, dressings, masks, gowns and catheters May be treated before incineration Offensive/Non Infectious Non infectious nappy, incontinence, sanitary and swabs etc. Deep Landfill Pharmaceutical* Cytotoxic and Cytostatic drugs Dental Non hazardous pharmaceutical waste or controlled drugs Any drugs that are toxic or surpress cell growth, such as anti-virals, immunosuppressants, steroids, hormone medicines and cancer treatments Waste services specifically designed for the collection and disposal of amalgam, lead foil, x-ray and precious wastes produced by dentists Denaturing if the drugs are controlled, then incinerated Incineration Incineration or recycle * Please note that our pharmaceutical waste container is green but still complies with latest legislation and is compliant with correct disposal routes. It is nationally recognised and excepted by the Environment Agency. Legislation & Guidance Hazardous Waste (England & Wales) Regulations 2005 (As amended by the Hazardous Waste (England and Wales) Regulations 2009) Special Waste Amendment (Scotland) Regulations 2004 Controlled Waste (Duty of Care) Regulations (NI) 2002 Hazardous Waste Regulations (NI) 2005 Environmental Protection (Duty of Care) Regulations 1991 Environmental Protection Act 1990 Waste Management Licensing Regulations 1994, Schedule 3 Management and disposal of healthcare waste (HTM 07-01) Health and Safety Precautions Hazardous pharmaceuticals such as controlled drugs must be disposed of and managed in line with legislation as they could be harmful to human health or the environment if disposed of improperly.
