4 PHS Spillcontrol Training Investing in your future As a member of the BSIF (British Safety Industry Federation), we can provide you with the essential training to ensure that your staff have the confidence and ability to safely plan and implement emergency spill control and so that they understand the environmental protection and health and safety impacts of your operation, including what legislation is relevant to your business. An investment in knowledge and training, is an investment in the future of your business as large penalties and fines can be imposed by The Environment Agency as a result of spillage pollution. Providing the necessary equipment to tackle emergency pollution incidents is important but if no-one on site knows how to use the equipment correctly, then uncontrolled fluids may still enter the environment causing extensive damage. Ensuring that your team are adequately trained will count towards achieving your ISO Certified by The course will cover: Understanding the regulations and your Duty of Care Identifying potential spill risks within the workplace Spill prevention, emergency planning and drainage systems The safe handling, storage and transportation of liquids Sorbent products, types and uses Essential clean up techniques Practical use of spill kits
Intelligent Spill Control & Containment Solutions 5 Spill Kits Dealing with hazardous fluids is a risky business, but typically accidents do happen. Spills of these liquids pose a significant risk to those around them and to the environment. It is vital that you have a spill response plan and appropriate, fully stocked spill kits are within easy reach to react effectively should an emergency spill occur. Our spill kits are available for use with general maintenance, oil or chemical spills. Whether a small portable kit or high capacity wheeled bin unit, a Spill kit is a must have item for all businesses, in order to help control spillages, reduce environmental impact, to eliminate the risk of fines and maintain health & safety levels in the workplace. Kits are available in a wide range of capacities, suited to controlling spillages of oil, chemicals and general liquids. All kits contain a range of sorbents including socks and pads, plug and seal putty, hazardous waste sacks and instructions. Larger kits include drain covers, cushions and warning tape. Absorbent Granules Ideal for the effective clean up of fuel, oil, chemical and other liquid spills in smaller volumes. The granules are simply poured around the area of the spill to prevent any further spread, and they gradually absorb and combine with the liquid until it is totally absorbed. They can then be swept up and disposed of appropriately. Introducing Spill-Aid the ultimate power absorber Quick, easy to use and simple four steps to safety to help you reduce the cost of cleanup, labour and materials when dealing with liquid spillages. Simply pour, sweep, swirl, brush and the spill is gone!: Lightweight Use absolutely anywhere Reduce disposal costs Minimise the risk of slips, trips and falls Much faster than the conventional mop and bucket
6 PHS Spillcontrol Sorbents Accidental spillages of fluids can pose a significant health and safety risk and can severely damage the environment, especially when those fluids are hazardous, such as oils, fuels and chemicals. It is essential that the correct procedures are in place and that the right products are to hand to quickly and effectively deal with any emergency spill situations. Our comprehensive range of absorbents are manufactured from the highest quality materials and provide consistent absorbency rates, designed to provide the perfect solution to clean up emergency spillages, whether large, small or on water. Designed to absorb a wide variety of liquids to ensure the safe and efficient clean up of unwanted and emergency spillages. Our sorbent range is available in: Maintenance Oil Only Chemical Grey White Yellow Designed to absorb and contain all non-aggressive fluids, both oil and water based. These hydrophobic products (does not absorb water), are designed to adsorb and contain oils, fuels, solvents and most petrochemicals. Chemical absorbents are for use on aggressive and non-aggressive liquids such as acids, caustics, oil coolants, solvents, water and solutions. Available in: Rolls Perfect for covering large areas and highly versatile, our absorbent rolls come in a variety of widths and are perforated to provide flexibility and economy of use, so it is easy to tear off just the right amount for the job in hand. Pads Fast absorbing, strong even when saturated and are essential for a cleaner and safer working environment. Ideal for use under leaking machinery and for wiping surfaces. Cushions With a large surface area, the cushion filler absorbs large amounts of liquid quickly. Can be used with drip pans or in conjunction with pads and socks to tackle larger spills. Socks Our spill socks are robust and specifically designed to trap and hold fluids. An essential component of your spill response plan. Booms Minimise environmental damage on land or water. Our booms are highly effective on spills in water, such as lakes, streams and rivers, as well as wet weather conditions due to their ability to float even when saturated.
Intelligent Spill Control & Containment Solutions 7 Containment Our spill containment systems will help you comply with the latest UK regulations governing the storage of oils and fluids, providing the necessary storage and secondary containment to minimise the impact of any spills or leaks, whether large or small. From spill pallets, to bunded flooring and spill trays, our comprehensive range of tough, high grade polyethylene products are specifically designed for the safe storage of fluids. Accessories Our range of accessories are vital additions to your spill response plan. By carefully colour coding drains and using easily identifiable oil safe storage containers, to providing efficient and clearly marked storage for your absorbents, you are ensuring you have taken all the necessary steps to effectively prevent and if necessary, deal with a potential pollution incident should one occur. Our range of accessories include: Spill kit stations Spill safety signage Drain covers Drain demarcation paint Oil safe containers Drip trays and pans Our complete service doesn t just end with our products For more information or to book your free site survey, contact us now on enquiries@phsspillcontrol.co.uk
8 PHS Spillcontrol Oil Regulations What you need to know Oil is one of the UK s most common pollutants, as it is used in large quantities in a wide variety of industries. Even the smallest amount can cause devastation to the surrounding environment and wildlife. Some of the most common causes of oil pollution are spills from storage facilities, accidents during delivery, dispensing or transportation and deliberate, illegal disposal of waste oil into the drainage systems. The Government has introduced regulations to help advise how to prevent oil spills, but if a spill does occur and enter the watercourse or the ground from your site, you will be prosecuted and could face substantial fines and have to pay for the cost of the clear up. When storing volumes of oil above 200 litres, whether in a drum, IBC (intermediate bulk container), mobile bowser or tank, the regulations require the provision of secondary containment in case of any leakage. The secondary containment can either be part of the primary container or the primary container can be placed onto a bund or spill pallet with use of a drip tray to catch leaks from the container, ancillary pipe work and equipment. The secondary containment must be sufficient to contain at least 110% of the maximum capacity of the primary container. Where multiple containers are present the secondary containment should be capable of storing 110% of the largest container, or 25% of the total capacity stored, whichever is greatest. For single drum storage a drip tray should be used and must be able to hold 25% of the drum volume unless the drum is stored in a high risk area. High risk areas would include: Within 50 metres of a well, borehole or spring Within 10 metres of a watercourse Near open drains or loose man hole covers Where fluid could run over hard ground to enter a watercourse or soak into the ground where it could pollute groundwater For more advice and guidance on these regulations: Environment Agency:
