Brief summary of PhD project Emergency management is a key process in society because of its crucial task in preventing death and damage in emergency situations. In case of emergency situations that require multidisciplinary assistance, like a large car crash on a highway, a railroad accident, the crash of an airplane, a destroying hurricane, a terrorist attack, waterflood, or incidents at poisonous industries, a multidisciplinary command-and-control team coordinates the assistance of the fire department, the police, and disaster medicine on the scene of the incident. This team is called the On Scene Command Team (OSCT) and is characterized by high expertise diversity, a low team tenure, and often low familiarity. The aim of my research is to further our understanding of what matters for this teams effectiveness. We investigate the contribution of the team situation model (TSM) and study how the team learning processes (co-) construction and constructive conflict contribute to the development of this TSM, and, in turn, team effectiveness. Moreover, we explore how the role of the TSM evolves over time by using a longitudinally approach. The results of this research we translate into practical suggestions for the training and education of emergency management command-and-control teams. This research we expand to other areas such as command-and-control teams in hospitals and at industrial sites. We investigate what characteristics of the interaction among team members matter for the eventual team effectiveness in terms of crisis control.
