Ellenbogen, MD, FACR Chair, ACR Board of Chancellors Radiology Associates of North Texas Dallas, TX 2013 Practice Leaders Meeting Faculty Biographies Dr. Ellenbogen received his undergraduate degree in Chemistry from Brown University and received his medical degree from State University of New York Downstate Medical Center. He completed his internship in diagnostic radiology and his residency and fellowship in ultrasound and GU radiology at UC San Diego. Dr. Ellenbogen is a partner in Radiology Associates of North Texas, with 121 radiologists. He is also Clinical Professor of Radiology at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Dallas, Southwestern Medical School. He has been an examiner for the American Board of Radiology oral boards in ultrasound five times. A Past President of the Dallas-Fort Worth Radiology Society and the Texas Radiological Society, he received the Gold Medal of the TRS in Involved with the ACR since 1992, he has served as Alternate Councilor, Councilor, member of the Council Steering Committee, Vice Speaker, Speaker, Secretary/Treasurer, Vice Chair of the Board and Chair of the Commission on Human Resources. A Member of the Board of Chancellors for the past 11 years, he is currently Chairman of the ACR Board of Chancellors. Dr. Ellenbogen also serves on the Editorial Board of JACR. In addition, he is Chair of the ACR Commission on Government Relations and Chair of the ACR Commission on International Relations. Frank J. Lexa, MD, MBA, Program Chair Vice Chairman and Professor of Radiology, Drexel University College of Medicine Adjunct Professor of Marketing, The Wharton School Philadelphia, PA Frank J. Lexa, MD, MBA, is a neuroradiologist and Professor of Radiology at the Drexel University College of Medicine where he is the Vice Chair of the Department of Radiology. He has been honored with several research awards including the Cornelius Dyke award of the American Society of Neuroradiology. He also works outside of academic medicine and is a member of the adjunct faculty of the Wharton School in the marketing department where he has worked for programs in the Global Consulting Practicum for over a decade. He also holds an appointment as a Professor of Business Development in the Life Sciences at the Instituto de Empresa in Madrid. There he has twice won the prestigious Prize of Excellence for outstanding teaching. Dr. Lexa lectures, consults and writes extensively on issues at the interface of health care and business science. He is the author of over 90 peer-reviewed articles, book and encyclopedia chapters. He served as the first Program Director of Executive Education for the American College of Radiology and has chaired, co-chaired and served on several key national committees and task forces for major organizations in radiology. Currently, he serves as both the Co-Chair of the Future Trends Committee for the ACR and the Chair of the Practice Leaders Committee. Bibb Allen Jr., MD, FACR, RCC
2 Vice Chair, ACR Board of Chancellors Baptist Health System Birmingham, AL Bibb Allen Jr., MD, FACR, RCC, is currently the Vice Chair of ACR s Board of Chancellors. He served as chair of the Commission on Economics from and also served as ACR s representative on the RVS Update Committee (RUC) from 2006 to Dr. Allen is a radiology certified coder and has extensive experience in the socioeconomic issues of radiology as they relate to coding, the valuation of physician work and practice expense. He also has been working with issues surrounding the sustainable growth rate (SGR) formula that sets the update for Medicare s conversion factor. He practices full time in Birmingham, AL, and is a member of the Birmingham Radiological Group. Jonathan W. Berlin, MD, MBA, FACR, Program Committee North Shore University Health System Evanston, IL Jonathan Berlin is a member of the body imaging section at NorthShore University Health System in Evanston, IL, and Clinical Associate Professor of Radiology at the University of Chicago School of Medicine. Dr. Berlin has an MBA from Northwestern s Kellogg School of Management and has authored or co-authored over 40 peer-reviewed publications and presented over 190 lectures on clinical and economics topics relating to radiology. Dr. Berlin has directed the business and practice management seminar for the ARRS since 2005 and the health policy and practice refresher course for the RSNA from He is a Fellow in the American College of Radiology and was a member of the editorial board of the JACR from He is a former ACR alternate advisor and member alternate to the American Medical Association relative value committee which recommends reimbursement valuation levels to the Federal Government for new and existing medical procedures. James Y. Chen, MD University of California, San Diego San Diego, CA Dr. Chen is an assistant Professor at the University of California, San Diego and San Diego VA Medical Center and has served as project faculty for the Global Consulting Practicum at the Wharton School in marketing. He is a CAQ d neuroradiologist and fellowship trained in imaging informatics. He is a strong believer in the power of social media to benefit both patients and practices. As a younger faculty member, he has experience straddling generational divides both amongst faculty and with trainees about to enter the radiology workforce. Keith J. 3 Dr. Eng is President of Golden Gate Radiology Medical Group and is Chief of Radiology at Chinese Hospital in San Francisco. Dr. Eng currently serves as the President-Elect of the California Radiological Society, and Treasurer of the San Francisco Medical Society. Additionally, Dr. Eng sits on numerous Health Information Technology boards and committees and has co-founded two start-up companies including his current a physician IT solutions company. Dieter R. Enzmann, MD Chair of UCLA Radiology Los Angeles, CA Dr. Enzmann is an internationally recognized neuroradiologist having trained at the University of California for his neuroradiology fellowship under the tutelage of Dr. Hans Newton and then promoted to the rank of tenured professor at Stanford University in Neuroradiology. He is certified by the American Board of Radiology and has the CAQ in Neuroradiology. His extensive CV includes 210 published manuscripts, 22 book chapters and 3 books. He has been invited to speak all around the globe on topics ranging from CNS infections to visions of the future of radiology as embodied in the concepts of systems radiology and computational radiology. As Chair of the Radiological Sciences Department at the UCLA Medical Center, Dr. Enzmann has built a strong clinical practice involving all new technologies and is growing research programs in the field of cardiovascular imaging, stroke imaging, oncologic imaging, radiogenomics and medical imaging informatics. The concept of radiogenomics seeks to link the world of molecular biology and systems biology to highly sophisticated image processing, which can create a form of systems radiology. Dr. Enzmann has been able to forge productive research relationships with industry and has a solid understanding of the business side of medicine having completed two sabbaticals at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. He holds two patents. He remains an astute observer of interrelated developments in science, business and market dynamics. Howard B. Fleishon, MD, MMM, FACR, Program Committee Medical Director North Mountain Radiology Group Phoenix, AZ Biography to come. Thomas Hoffman, JD, CAE American College of Radiology Reston, VA Thomas R. Hoffman, JD, CAE, is Associate General Counsel with the American College of Radiology in Reston, Virginia. He advises College members and staff on fraud and abuse, self-referral, and other federal and state compliance and transactional matters. Mr. Hoffman also counsels College members and staff on corporate and medical legal matters. He currently is principal staff to ACR s Commission on Leadership and Practice Development, Task Force on Teleradiology Practice, and the ACR Ethics and Governance Committees. Additionally, he has served as staff to the ACR Task Forces on Conflicts of Interest; International Teleradiology and Regulatory Compliance.
4 Mr. Hoffman is a Certified Association Executive of the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE). He served as Chair of the ASAE Legal Section Council in and has chaired and served on the ASAE Annual Association Law Symposium (Washington, DC) Planning Committee. Mr. Hoffman joined the faculty at George Mason University in the fall semester of 2012 and is teaching a course in health law. Lawrence R. Muroff, MD, FACR, Program Committee CEO & President Imaging Consultants, Inc. Tampa, FL Lawrence R. Muroff, MD, FACR, is a Clinical Professor of Radiology at both the University of Florida and the University of South Florida Colleges of Medicine. Dr. Muroff is CEO & President of Imaging Consultants, Inc., and he is President Emeritus of Educational Symposia, Inc. He served as the Director of MR, CT and Nuclear Medicine at University Community Hospital, Tampa, FL, from For 20 years he was a member of a 45 person radiology practice in which he served in several leadership positions, including CEO. Dr. Muroff is an honors graduate of Dartmouth College and Harvard Medical School, a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Omega Alpha, and a recipient of the Gold Medal of the Florida Radiological Society. The ACR has recently announced that Dr. Muroff will be a 2013 recipient of the ACR Gold Medal. Dr. Muroff is a past member of the Board of Chancellors and is currently a Councilor of the American College of Radiology (ACR). He is also a member of the Board of Directors of both the Radiology Leadership Institute of the ACR and the Neiman Health Policy Institute. Dr. Muroff has served on the Board of Trustees of the Society of Nuclear Medicine and the Society of Magnetic Resonance Imaging. Rodney S. Owen, MD, FACR, Program Committee President Scottsdale Medical Imaging Limited Paradise Valley, AZ Rodney Owen, MD, trained in radiology at the University of Pennsylvania from , finishing with a fellowship in body and musculoskeletal MRI. He was the 12th member to join a private practice group in Scottsdale, AZ, which has since grown to a Phoenix metro-wide practice of 65 radiologists. Dr. Owen currently serves as President of Scottsdale Medical Imaging LTD, and co-executive Vice President of Southwest Diagnostic Imaging, LTD. He is active on the executive committee of Strategic Radiology and serves as vice chairman of the committee. Dr. Owen has been active in the ACR both locally and nationally. He remains active clinically, but has substantial group administrative duties. James H. Thrall, MD, MBA, FACR Radiologist-in-Chief, Massachusetts General Hospital Juan M. Taveras Professor of Radiology, Harvard Medical School Boston, MA Dr. James H. Thrall is the Radiologist-in-Chief at Massachusetts General Hospital and serves as the Juan M. Taveras Professor of Radiology, Harvard Medical School. He has held these positions since 1988.
5 Dr. Thrall received his MD from the University of Michigan in 1968 and trained in radiology and nuclear medicine at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington, DC. Dr. Thrall returned to the University of Michigan in 1975 and was promoted to professor in Dr. Thrall has served as President of the American Roentgen Ray Society and as Chairman of the Board of Chancellors and President of the American College of Radiology. He is a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies and has received the Gold Medals of the American Roentgen Ray Society, the Radiological Society of North America and the Association of University Radiologists. Dr. Thrall is an Honorary Member of the French Society of Radiology and the European Society of Radiology and an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Radiologists of the United Kingdom. He has received the Tessla Medal from the Royal College of Radiologists and the Beclere Medal from the International Society of Radiology.
