3 History of RN Prescribing The U.K. Experience England: 1992 first legislation. Narrow list of drugs by protocol 2006 any drug for any condition within individual scope of competence including some controlled drugs 2009 narcotic and controlled drugs Ireland: 1998 recommendations made in national report 2006 legislation introduced 2007 legislation proclaimed

4 Scope of Practice RN Certified Prescriber Manitoba Prescriber role of the RN has a specific scope of practice/target population; applies to those areas identified as having an unmet need. May be referred by employer as driven by client needs Prescriptive authority for clearly defined medications/diagnoses; tightly controlled

5 Scope of Practice Will require the inclusion of: Diagnosis Order/Receiving Diagnostic & Screening Tests Prescribing/Dispensing Employer support positions, policies Some overlap in competencies and scope with nurse practitioners

7 Regulation Competencies for RN prescribers Describe the integrated knowledge, skills, judgment and attributes that guide registered nurse certified prescribers. Serve as a guide for curriculum development for course(s) of instruction. Inform the public and employer of the knowledge, skills, judgment and attributes necessary in order to meet practice expectations of registered nurse certified prescribers.

Nurse practitioners RN(EP) or RN, NP Practice in a wide variety of settings and possess a broader scope of practice. Education driven by individual Prescriptive authority for NPs currently expanding; broad range of diagnoses.
