2 What can we learn from other professions? For our purposes, almost all licensing structures are single tier. Terminology Licensing and certification

3 The case of New Mexico Initial Diagnostic Topical Oral Pharmaceutical Agent Knowledge base CANNOT use topical pharmaceutical agents to treat eye diseases. CAN use topical pharmaceutical agents to treat eye diseases. Can prescribe Schedule III through Schedule IV controlled narcotic drugs. Certification is based on scope of practice, not a signal of competency.

5 Hospitals may choose to only hire doctors who are ABMS MOC program completers. Alternatively, hospitals may have specific responsibilities and compensation plans for doctors who have completed the program versus those who have not completed the program. IMPORTANT: If a doctor were to fail the program or chooses not to participate he or she is still eligible to practice medicine.

6 Undergraduate education: Four years at a college or university to earn a BS or BA degree. Medical school: Four years of education at one of the U.S. medical schools accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME). Residency program (graduate medical education): Through a national matching program, newly graduated MDs enter into a residency program that is three to seven years or more of professional training under the supervision of senior physician educators. The length of residency training varies depending on the medical specialty chosen. Fellowship: One to three years of additional training in a subspecialty is an option for some doctors who want to become highly specialized in a particular field.

7 Behavioral Therapy Temporary Permission Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor To qualify as a LPCC, an applicant must have completed 4,000 hours of post-master's degree supervised professional practice in the delivery of clinical services in the diagnosis and treatment of mental illnesses and disorders in both children and adults. Licensed Professional Counselor Graduate degree + 2,000 hours supervised practice Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor bachelor's degree followed by the passing of both a written and an oral examination or pass a written exam and complete 2000 hours of post degree supervised practice prior to applying for a license.

8 Social Work Licensed Social Worker (LSW) : May engage in social work practice, except that an LSW must not engage in clinical social work practice. Licensed Graduate Social Worker (LGSW) : May engage in social work practice, except that an LGSW must not engage in clinical social work practice except under supervision of an LICSW. Licensed Independent Social Worker (LISW) :May engage in social work practice, except that an LISW must not engage in clinical social work practice except under supervision of an LICSW. Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW) May engage in social work practice, including clinical social work practice. Mobility is based on continuation education, supervised practice, and written examination. Examination is required for every level.
