2 Educational Goals Statement Your Educational Goals Statement is the most important element of your degree plan. Your Educational Goals Statement must address the following topics, but may include other material: Your Past Briefly describe previous learning experiences in higher education, work, and life Your Present How will your learning experiences at Metropolitan State relate to your personal and professional life? Why do you want to create an individualized degree? What are the primary components of your Focus Area? Suggest a title for your Focus Area. Your Future What do you hope to gain from this learning experience? What visions do you have for your future? How will this learning experience prepare you for that future? Your Philosophy Describe your philosophy of what it means to be an educated person and how does this learning experience move you closer to becoming an educated person? Your Educational Goals Statement should be no less than 2 typed, double-spaced pages. As a child, two things especially interested me. One was stopping along Post Road, next to Minneapolis St. Paul International Airport, with my Dad, to watch the planes take off and land at the airport. The other activity I loved to do was to take apart and put back together toys, gadgets, and automobile components to see how they worked. Because of all this mechanical experimentation as I was growing up, my mother was no longer surprised by my mechanical improvements such as when toast was actually ejected from our toaster! I didn t understand this growing up, but looking back, I can see now how these two interests and kinds of experiences led me to completing my FAA A & P certificate and becoming an aircraft technician. Except for industrial technology courses and sports, high school was not especially enjoyable for me. I received average grades but wondered about the relevance of some of the subjects required for a high school diploma. I enjoyed participating in baseball, track, and hockey throughout high school and learned to appreciate the fact that self-discipline is required to excel in most areas of our life. Based on recent learning style assessments I have completed, I can see now that I have always been a kinesthetic learner. Again, I did not realize or understand this earlier in my life but can now see how my favored learning style drove many choices in my life. During the summers following my junior and senior years in high school, I worked at a small fixed base operation at the Lakeville Airport. I washed and fueled aircraft, cleaned hangars, assisted the FBO aircraft mechanic, and 2
3 provided customer service for pilots using this FBO. Even though this job paid very little money per hour, I gained valuable insight into the aviation industry and learned some of the language of aviation. The experience also solidified my desire to become an aircraft technician for my career choice. After enrolling in the MCTC Aircraft Technician program, I thoroughly enjoyed my courses and instructors. I excelled in the coursework and completed all requirements for my certificate as soon as I could. During this time, I also completed private pilot ground school at Inver Hills Community College, logged the required flight hours with a local flight instructor, and earned my private pilot certificate. Since my graduation from MCTC, I have worked at two small fixed base operators as an aircraft technician. This has been a satisfying experience, as well as a learning experience, out in the real world of aviation. Because the aviation industry seems to be in a constant state of flux, I feel that I must complete a bachelor s degree to be more marketable in the future. Eventually, I would like to be a manager in a general aviation operation or with a regional airline. So, this realization has led me to the Aviation Management Program in First College, Metropolitan State University. As I have begun the degree planning process, I have appreciated that my past technical education has meaning and is the foundation for new learning now at Metropolitan State. I am enjoying being able to tailor my educational path to meet my future career plans. Being able to make choices about my education has made it much more relevant for me. Because I want to work in management in some capacity, the business management, computer, and human resources courses will be a good foundation for working in a manager s position. In the past, I have worked in one rather narrow aspect of aviation, as a mechanic in general aviation. The required and elective aviation management courses will broaden my perspective on the aviation industry as a whole. 3
4 Courses in aviation law, ethics, crew resource management, airline operations, and airport operations will prepare me for other future opportunities in either general aviation or with an airline. As a part of my plan, I am proposing an internship with a regional airline in the area of maintenance control to learn more about this important department and how personnel interact with line pilots and dispatchers. To me, being an educated person means that all of our past experience and more formal education, combined, makes us what we are today. It is true that most people today need a college degree to advance in their careers but there are also many life lessons that are taught outside of the classroom. We must acknowledge that learning as well to succeed. The path from point A to point B is seldom a straight line. We must understand that the detours between the points can be just as meaningful in the grand scheme of things. Returning to college has been both exciting and intimidating at the same time. Managing work and school has been a challenge but the course work is interesting and it is refreshing to look at things from a new point of view. I hope to finish my bachelor s degree within three years and possibly pursue a master s degree sometime in the future as well. 4
