At Eurosatory 2014 exhibition in Paris Patria will introduce a high-profile training simulator for Patria Nemo mortar system. Patria Nemo training simulator combines Patria s expertise to meet increasing training needs of current and future Patria Nemo cus- tomers. Patria Nemo gunner-commander training simulator is the outcome of successful collaboration of simulator expertise originating in aviation training systems, systems knowhow related to fire control applications and weapon system expertise related to Patria Nemo. The simulator provides a realistic training environment for all kinds of fire missions that can be performed with Patria Nemo mortar system. It consists of real Nemo operating software and hardware, such as a control stick, turret and fire management systems, panels and displays, bundled in a high quality built simulator cabin. High fidelity VBS2 (Virtual Battle Space) based environment with extensive networking capabilities makes it possible for a whole Nemo platoon or even other types of simulators to connect to the same scenario. It also provides expandability to increase the training capabilities from weapon system simulator to cover also platform (e.g. vehicle or boat) training. Insta Automation Oy specialises in industrial and process automation; the defence and security technology specialist Insta DefSec Oy offers critical situational awareness and data security solutions, products and services; Insta ILS Oy provides lifecycle services for the aviation industry; and Insta Innovation Oy is focused on new businesses such as virtual technology and innovative services. The transaction aims to strengthen and improve the competitiveness of the Finnish data link expertise by combining the complementing capabilities of Patria and Insta into a single entity. The avionics business was separated from Insta DefSec Oy and incorporated into the fourth businesssegment company, Insta ILS Oy. As part of Insta DefSec Oy, the company already established a solid position as an international provider of civil and military aviation device and system maintenance services. In the future, the company is planning to offer other maintenance services for civil customers, as well. Insta Innovation Oy and a social and health care provider company Pihlajalinna Oy established the joint business Insta Care. The business idea of Insta Care Oy is to provide municipalities and other health care service providers with a new real-time ERP solution, and also to develop an online reporting solution for occupational health care services. Insta increased its holding in Millog Oy, which is a strategic partner to the Finnish Defence Forces, responsible for the Army s material maintenance and spare part logistics. Insta now owns 37% of the company. The other main owner is Patria Oyj. Last year, the Insta Group initiated the biggest investment in its history: the construction of its new head office in Tampere. The new building will comprise approximately 7,500 square metres of office premises and industrial facilities. Once it is completed, in summer 2014, Insta s premises in Tampere will add up to 26,000 square metres. In addition, Insta has offices dealing with the industrial automation business in eight Finnish cities. Insta shall continue its aggressive operative growth, but is also actively seeking potential business acquisitions, joint ventures and affiliates. 5 Communication Solution Specialist Elektrobit Expanding Tactical Communication Elektrobit (EB) is a leading military radio and communication solution specialist providing products and solutions for wireless and wire-line Tactical Communications and Signals Intelligence. All the products are developed and tested to meet the extreme military requirements. EB Tactical Wireless IP Network (EB TAC WIN) is self-forming, selfhealing broadband wireless wide area IP network that interconnects deployed forces and assets at the battalion and battle-group level and below onthe-move, at-the quick-halt or at-the-halt, delivering voice, data and video communications. With its multi-band, multi-topology operation, ad hoc routing and superior connectivity to fixed and wireless networks, the EB TAC WIN offers unprecedented flexibility, scalability and speed in deploying broadband wireless IP networking to the military tactical communications, border security, sensor networks, public safety and disaster response applications. Elektrobit s Tactical Router and Radio Head units meet MIL specifications, enabling fixed, semi-fixed and mobile operation in harsh environments. Elektrobit is currently studying a new connectivity option for the EB TAC WIN. When available, this option would allow the subscribers to connect to the EB TAC WIN network using standard or special LTE user equipment. This would provide a cost-efficient means to access the backbone network and its broadband services. In addition to the network solution, a VoIP SW client running in the user equipment would allow voice connections over LTE. As a true IP network, EB TAC WIN can route calls between a large variety of IP-based devices, and an example of such devices are the EB Tough VoIP Phones. Elektrobit s Tactical Router and Radio Head units meet MIL specifications, enabling fixed, semi-fixed and mobile operation in harsh environments. The EB Tough VoIP product family includes EB Tough VoIP Field Phone, EB Tough VoIP Desktop phone, EB Tough VoIP Terminal, and EB Network Extender. A new addition to the EB Tough VoIP product family is the EB Gigabit Power over Ethernet (PoE)+ Injector. It is a rugged network-agnostic solution that provides high speed data and electrical high power connections for devices used in tactical military communication environments. It is well suited for high vibration environments like vehicle installations. Overall, the EB Tough VoIP product family provides IP telephony for tactical users in military environments. The phones are SIP V2 based VoIP clients that provide interoperability with other SIP clients and server implementations. In addition, with EB s patented technology, Tough VoIP phones can also operate in a distributed tactical mode without a centralized server. Both EB TAC WIN and EB Tough VoIP systems are part of creating a renewed way of fight for the Finnish Defence Forces by bringing more flexibility to tactical communications and ability for joint operations in the battlefield. Elektrobit s military radio and communication products include also the EB Wideband COMINT Sensor. It is a Software Defined Radio based sensor for both accelerated military communications intelligence and lawful interception. The sensor helps signal analysts to search new unknown signals of high value targets with the help of real-time spectrum monitoring, wideband recording and playback. The EB Sensor also intercepts military and commercial broadband microwave signals. The product consists of tuners, COTS server hardware for signal processing and a wideband recorder for raw signals. The sensor has 80 MHz instantaneous bandwidth, which is well beyond any legacy COMINT receiver s performance. In addition to the products above, Elektrobit offers handheld user equipment for defense, public safety and industrial use. Such products are EB Soldier Terminal Platform, an Android-based rugged tablet that can be tailored to fit different customer needs, and EB LTE Smart Phone, customizable handset with latest smart phone features. 6 From detectors to systems solutions EnviScreen TM CBRN Monitoring Systems turnkey solutions from Environics From detectors to system solutions EnviScreenTM system software for real-time situational awareness, forecasting and background calculations Environics has grown intensively as a provider for turnkey CBRN System Solutions during the last ten years - the trend boosted with related system software and application customized detector development. The efforts in the R&D have been rewarded, so that nowadays the system solutions for protection of critical infra, area monitoring and land and naval vehicles play a significant role in the Environics CBRN business. Turnkey concept founded on the state-of-the-art CBRN detectors The brand name EnviScreen TM refers to the whole solution with its components that have been developed by the company and that constitute the versatile CBRN and environmental safety system: monitoring software, measuring devices, workstations, server hardware and software, sensor gateways and communication networks. The fielded measuring devices are the key components that generate the data shown in the monitoring software. The EnviScreen TM system solution concept is based on proven system components provided as COTS products. Environics own CBRN product range covers the most of the state-of-the-art devices to detect chemical warfare agents and toxic industrial compounds (the ChemPro product family), radiation (the RanidVision products) and hazardous biological agents (the ENVI BioScout, ENVI Assay System). Versatile sensor and integration support The EnviScreen TM systems utilize technology that enables hardware, protocol and application level integration solutions. They provide compatibility and readiness with tens of different kinds of measuring devices from Environics CBRN detectors and various 3rd party sensors to camera and video servers. The Master Module operates as a sophisticated sensor gateway and data processing unit running in the Linux environment with an interface (TCP/IP) to the upper level of the monitoring station software also to building management, automation and C4I systems to expand the system capabilities beyond the basic CBRN monitoring network. The diverse data collected from measuring devices is harmonized and filtered by the Master Module in order to optimize the data transfer in the communication network. Moreover, the Master Module enables sensor management on-line and fine-tuning of the sensor performance according to expected threat scenarios. EnviScreenTM system software for real-time situational awareness, forecasting and background calculations The EnviScreen TM system comprises support for multiple sensors, data transfer EnviScreenTM Operix Real-time Operation Tool with graphical interface provides real-time situational overview, sensor management and timely emergency instructions. Environics 2014 technologies, database and services, versatile reporting, management and monitoring software. Modern commercial database and software technologies and platforms are exploited in the system software that forms the heart of the system solutions. The EnviScreen TM Operix with its interactive GIS user interface designed in cooperation with usability specialists provides the system operators with continuous, real-time operative situational awareness and guidance based on real-time sensor measurements. In the case of potential threats, the operators can be guided to take appropriate countermeasures with clear emergency information and instructions like standard operational procedures that appear in the user interface. The EnviScreen TM Operix is complemented with EnviScreen TM Manifix software that assists the operators and decision makers in CBRN consequence management with advanced plume modelling for the hazard prediction and release source identification. As management software for CBRN incident scenario simulation, analysis and forecasting, the EnviScreen TM Manifix enhances preparedness for the time before, during and after CBRN releases by providing tools for modeling chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear dispersion forecasts and effect assessment. The EnviScreen TM Manifix presents clear and illustrative forecasts and analysis on map interface, based on GIS information, surveillance and sensor data as well as different dispersion and plume calculation models. In addition, it is featured with automatic background plume- and hazard area calculations and result presentations from sensor and scheduled events. Conclusion The scale requirements for CBRN monitoring systems may vary from single detection point systems up to nationwide security networks. The flexible and modular structure makes the EnviScreen TM systems cost-effective and fully scalable from naval vehicles to critical infra protection, so the system solution is ideal for both small and large scale CBRN and environmental surveillance applications. Based on specific customer requirements, appropriate modules and features are selected and on the other hand, the systems are easily expandable for future needs. A Swedish Army representative is present to provide the user's point of view. At General Dynamics stand, Frestems will be presenting customized ProMIL 245 with different configuration specially designed for a very high vehicle. Frestems Flexible Rescue Systems and customized solutions for modern military ambulances Frestems manufactures ambulance products specialized in casualty evacuation equipment and military stretcher loading systems design, development and manufacturing for military vehicles. Frestems ProMIL products are saving lives on land, sea and air in the toughest and the most demanding operations around the world. Long history and strong background in delivering military ambulance solutions Through the long history of equipping military ambulance vehicles and focus on long term product development and quality improvement, Frestems has become recognized as the leading military ambulance contractor in Europe. Our offering for military ambulance projects is: Ambulance vehicle design and concept work ProMIL products Maintenance and Support Enhanced ProMIL 245 Stretcher System ProMIL 245 stretcher system is a unique, patented wall mounted stretcher loading system for military vehicles. The system is designed to provide high protection against shock effects of mines and IED s. ProMIL 245 can securely load and fasten one stretcher at a time into the vehicle. All product operations are manual and require no extra power. The system utilizes unique three dimensional motion to tilt and turn from the vehicle wall though the central part of the vehicle corridor and out from the rear doorway with only one movement. The mechanism includes a progressive force gas spring to ease and assist movement during patient loading. The stretcher platform has automatic NATO stretcher locking that is released once the stretcher platform is moved to the loading position. Modular design allows configuration of the three dimensional motion and allows flexible integration into different types of vehicles. New ProMIL 360 treatment base with suspension Patient comfortability has been a key factor in civilian ambulance design but recently it has also been noted in military vehicles. Having this in mind, Frestems has developed a new treatment base: ProMIL 360 is a new state of the art treatment base with suspension. The product is designed to be used in challenging terrain conditions in tracked or wheeled vehicles. The system provides premium shock absorption and vertical stabilization for the stretcher patient with duplex hydro pneumatic suspension. The shock absorption offers great level of protection against rough road conditions and significantly increases the probability of survival of a severely wounded patient. The movement between different treatment positions is operatedwith simple push of a controller button. It enables prompt and easy height, shock and anti-shock position adjustment. 8 UAS Launcher Manufacturer Robonic Receives ISO and AQAP Quality Certificates The Finnish manufacturer of unmanned air systems launchers Robonic Ltd Oy, a subsidiary of Sagem (Safran), has been awarded an ISO 9001 quality certificate and AQAP 2110 certificate. The latter contains requirements that are to be met for defence materiel procurements. The certificates were granted by Bureau Veritas, which is one of the world's leading auditors of quality management systems. "We have had a quality system in place in our company since The certificates we just received bear witness to systematic long-term effort the entire chain of manufacturing of items of equipment. "To customers or tender requesters alike, quality certificates show that an organization carries out its business methodically and in accordance with agreed procedures," Moisio sizes up. Robonic is partner to the world's leading suppliers of unmanned tactical air systems and several manufacturers of aerial targets. The company's Ohto and Kontio launchers are in use with ten operators. Robonic launchers are compatible with both slow unmanned air systems and high-speed aerial targets. The AQAP 2110 certificate is compliant with NATO standards, and is therefore used extensively in procurements of defence products and services. An organization can receive an AQAP 2110 certificate provided it already possesses a valid ISO 9001 certificate, whose requirements are expanded and further specified by AQAP The purpose of the latter is to ensure that the procedures and documentation of an organization guarantee the faultless operation of defence equipment and systems and make possible to trace release is the CEI (Composite Engineering Inc) Firejet with the launch speed of 250 km/h. Robonic Kontio launchers are used by the French Army for the operations of Sperwer Mk II tactical UAVs systems, produced by Sagem. 9 Long distance rangefinder family Noptel launches Interesting part of Noptel laser rangefinder technologies are the middle range and long range laser rangefinders. These small size and light weight modules are provided for system integrators and manufacturers globally. The rangefinders exploit laser pulse flight time measurement technology and advanced signal processing techniques, which allow measurement of distances to poorly reflecting targets. While the short range laser rangefinder technology allows measurement with every pulse and at high measuring rate, the long range rangefinders exploit a special cumulative measurement method. By using this cumulative measurement method Noptel can exploit standard diode lasers and eye safe technology, yet reaching distance to several kilometres and at good measuring rate. Furthermore, the used technology allows competitive pricing and very small size of the units. Noptel started to use the cumulative measurement technology in rangefinders in a project with a Belgian company FN Herstal, with whom Noptel developed a state-ofthe-art multi-technology fire control unit FCU. Today FN Herstal is the main shareholder of Noptel. Noptel supplies the FCU units to FN Herstal on frequent basis. Technology The technology developed for the FCU has later been exploited in the Noptel LRF modules. The family of LRF modules comprises open and closed units, from small 50 gram unit up to 500g high performance unit. Typical measurement range for the smallest units is 1-3 km and for the high performance units 5-10 km. Moreover, as special units Noptel offers modules for km distances. Applications Typical applications for these modules are systems for thermal imaging, forward observation, surveillance, weapon sights, targeting, fire control and reconnaissance. The modules have been designed to operate as an OEM part of the complete system and controlled by the master unit. The modular structure of the modules allows mechanical restructuring of the unit, when necessary. That is especially important, when the available space in the master unit is limited. Noptel will present the latest LRF technology at the Eurosatory exhibition in Paris June long distance rangefinder family Noptel laser rangefinder family has enlarged with new series of long distance rangefinder modules. The small size open modules have woken huge interest among system integrators since the start of the launch. Several system integrators have adopted the new rangefinders into their new projects and products and many negotiations are actively ongoing. 10 Proactive cybersecurity Discover zero-day vulnerabilities proactively: Don't leave backdoors into critical network The Stuxnet demonstrated that critical infrastructure networks are no longer protected by isolation. They face the same threats as ICT networks, but the risks are far greater: a cyberattack against a critical infrastructure network can result in cascading failures across critical infrastructure and the industries it supports. Yet, many critical infrastructure operators have done little or nothing to improve the cybersecurity of their facilities. Given the risks, governments cannot wait for the private sector to take initiative. They need to make cybersecurity a national security priority and work together with the private sector to prepare for cyberattacks. The biggest cybersecurity threats are the unknown, zero-day vulnerabilities still remaining in the code. ner or using vulnerability scanning to test software products before release. Good cyber-hygiene also covers the use of signature-based security defenses, such IPS/IDS solutions, vulnerability scanners and firewalls. They are fairly efficient in defending against attacks exploiting known vulnerabilities. However, they can only detect pieces of malware, for which an identifier, known as a signature, already exists and has been deployed. Attacks exploiting zero-day vulnerabilities can completely bypass these defenses. Increased exposure Critical infrastructure networks are increasingly using Internet protocols and communicate with external resources, sometimes over the public Internet. The transition into Internet Protocol (IP) based networks helps reduce costs and improve efficiency, but it also exposes these previously isolated networks to external attacks. Most systems and protocols used in critical infrastructure networks were developed for closed networks with trusted de vices and no connection to the outside world. They contain very little security features, and more worryingly, they have never been hardened meaning there are plenty of exploitable vulnerabilities in these networks. Vulnerabilities enable attacks In all types of cyberattacks, the initial access into a system is enabled by a vulnerability in the system. These are simply errors made during development. Software is written by humans, thus there will always be mistakes. Ideally, they should also be fixed during development, because after deployment the errors become exploitable vulnerabilities. Security researchers, security companies and hackers, discover some of these. If they report their findings, software developers can create patches for the found vulnerabilities. These vulnerabilities are now known vulnerabilities. The biggest threat: Zero-days The biggest cybersecurity threats are the unknown, zero-day vulnerabilities still remaining in the code. Advanced attacks, like Stuxnet, exploit multiple zero-day vulnerabilities making them extremely difficult to defend against. However, even one single zero-day vulnerability can have a huge impact, as the Heartbleed bug demonstrated. The vulnerability in the popular OpenSSL library, used to protect the communication of sensitive information, potentially gave attackers access to 66% of sensitive information shared online. Reducing the risk The risk of cyberattacks can be reduced considerably by implementing basic cyberhygiene measures, such as deploying patches in a timely man- Catching the next Heartbleed bug Fuzzing is a security testing technique that can find previously unknown, zero-day vulnerabilities by triggering them with unexpected inputs. By using fuzzing to test their systems, organizations can find and fix vulnerabilities before the attackers have a chance to exploit them. Fuzzing improves the security and robustness of networks making it significantly harder for the bad actors to devise an attack. The less vulnerabilities there are in the system, the harder it is to find a vulnerability to exploit. Detecting attacks earlier The longer attacks stay undetected the more damage they can cause. Good cyberthreat awareness is key to establishing systematic and efficient processes for responding to cyber incidents. Organizations can improve their situation awareness by automating information collection, processing and reporting and engaging in timely information sharing with their cybersecurity partners. Proactive cybersecurity strategy Proactive defense is all about improving national cyberdefense capabilities, i.e., a nation's ability to prevent and detect cyberattacks. Cyberattacks can never be fully avoided, but with the correct cybersecurity strategies the risk of attacks can be reduced con- siderably. However, proactive cyberdefense is not just implementing new technologies; it is improving internal processes and building strong partnerships. Timely information sharing is an important part of proactive cyberdefense, because it promotes transparency thus strengthening partnerships. Transparency also ensures that the efforts we make to secure cyberspace do not compromise the openness of the Internet, which is the very source of its success.
