3 MARKET REPORT SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT, TESTING & QA Exec Executive Summary Large scale digital transformation and web application projects look set to continue over the coming 12, driving demand in this skill set. There is also a shift in the market towards cloud deployments, and environments moving more towards Agile methodology, creating a demand for automation testers. We predict the next year to continue to bring an increase in contract requirements for test analysts as previously outsourced projects have come full circle due to lack of business interaction. Large scale banking projects are also ongoing with in-house testing teams preferred over outsourcing options. Despite this, one third of IT professionals in this vertical feel insecure in their role over the coming 12, and a large 57% are expecting to change jobs in the next year. With regard to development, junior and mid level programming roles are now being moved off shore which may be affecting job security. Rates and salaries are set to remain stable on the whole, with increases mainly in store for AEM, Sitecore and JavaScript Developers as well as automation engineers, due to demand for strong candidates in this area. Salaries may reduce somewhat for manual testers as there are many candidates in the market in this area, and the market is shifting towards automation testing rather than traditional manual testing roles. Key skills in demand include full stack developers with proven end to end capabilities in the latest technologies; Java,.NET, Functional Programmers (Scala, Clojure, Groovy, etc.), TDD/BDD/DDD, CI/CD, DevOps, Cloud (AWS, Azure, Google, etc.), Sitecore Developers, AEM Developers, UI/ JavaScript Developer, SharePoint and BizTalk. There is also increased demand for strong Developers who can work across the full-stack in an Agile environment. Additionally, as most projects move to be web based those skilled in Winforms will be seeing greater opportunities. IT testers are still required to have strong communication skills. Those skilled in automation, performance, regression and nonfunctional testing are set to see an increase in opportunities. With regard to automation testing, in demand technologies include Selenium, Cucumber, BDD and Ruby. There has also been a decrease in requirements for performance testers. Clients are advised to react quickly to good developers and pay them well, where possible. There is a lack of good developers with strong analytical skills in the current market as well as a lack of automation testers with refined communication skills. Speed of the period between interviewing and offering a candidate is key to securing these professionals.
