Outdoor Lab Schools to remain open B B F Staff Writer The Jeffco school district s Outdoor Lab Schools have been spared from the chopping block, thanks to a grassroots effort to raise funds. Fund-raising groups have raised,, and the school board will chip in the remaining, needed to keep the schools open next Grassroots fund-raising campaign reaches goal year, according to district spokeswoman Lynn Setzer. Mount Evans Lab School just west of Evergreen and the Windy Peak School near Wellington Lake were targeted for closure as part of million in district budget cuts for -. Reservations may be made by calling Student mural offers support to Japanese T WHAT S HOT Fairy Godmothers Tea Party West Jeff student Lizzy Ainsworth he kids in Mary Pond s seventh-grade class at West Middle School want to help the Japanese people devastated by the earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster by reaching across the waves, the sadness and the cultural barriers to say, There s hope. So the students in the gifted-and-talented class created a mural and video as part of the Art Miles Mural Project. The nonprofit invites groups from around the world to paint -by- -foot murals that are sent to children in other parts of the world to promote global peace. The mural from Pond s class will be displayed in Japan, and the video will be on the group s website at Pond said the students conducted hours of research for their sections of the canvas. The Japanese-themed mural is decorated with flowers, the rising sun, flags, calligraphy, peace symbols, helping hands, and wide expanses of calm blue water and green land. The students work is hopeful, playful and serious. Paxton Miller,, said all people are connected, and his rendering was created with bright-colored paints and youthful certainty that all will be well. EVERGREEN When the deputy stopped to ask after the well-being of the betrothed couple he found walking along the shoulder of Evergreen Parkway near Brookline Road about 11 p.m. May 21, Beau had a bleeding cut on his face, and Fiancee had blood on her left hand, but no visible injuries. Fiancee explained that they d been on their way home from a friend s house when Beau impetuously pulled off the road and abandoned her and the car. Beau said Fiancee got mad at him for laughing at her sloppy drunken speech and smacked him in the puss, at which time he decided it would be healthier to continue as a pedestrian. Fiancee denied scratching Beau, saying he must have run into some bushes. Cited for third-degree assault, Fiancee was placed first in handcuffs, then, wrestling and screaming and hollering for Beau to rescue her, placed in the back of a patrol car for the trip to the Golden lockup. 3 Wednesday, June 1, 2011 News 3 Casting off for retirement West Jeff s LaViolette ending 39 years as educator, administrator By Barbara Ford Staff Writer Retiring principal Frank LaViolette always has schools on his mind: one is West Middle School, where he has been principal for three years. The other involves fins. I m going fishing, LaViolette said. Before he was at West Jeff Middle School, LaViolette spent eight years as principal at West Elementary. And after 39 years as an educator and administrator, he said it s time to move on. Without the bustle of the school day, the challenge of thinking on his feet and no two days alike, LaViolette said he ll visit with family or volunteer his time, but he s a little unsure of his next step until after he spends some time with his favorite hobby. We ll see what s in store for me, I guess, LaViolette said. While he treasures his time as an educator and the work that has been done on his watch to make West Jeff a better school, in the end LaViolette decided to retire because I m worried about education. He s concerned that kids who are home-schooled or those taking classes online aren t getting enough instruction time. The whole thing with home school and online education I don t think it s good for a majority of kids, he said. It should just be for the exceptional child who needs more. LaViolette said that if children can t handle the rigor of the classroom, how can they handle the self-discipline to go to school online? Lessons learned West Jeff Middle School has a special place in LaViolette s heart, because not only was he principal for three years, but before his stint at the elementary school, he spent four years as the middle school s assistant principal. LaViolette said he s worked hard to create a welcoming environment at the middle school for both students and the Conifer community. He s welcomed groups to the building that support the community and provide educational programs that help kids. Mostly, for LaViolette, it s all about the kids. He s tried to help kids learn about making wise choices during the tough middle school years when students still have time to recover from bad decisions. This is the stage where they re making decisions both good and bad, LaViolette said. Better that they make poor choices now than later on in life. Discipline for LaViolette is a positive thing, and his hope is that kids who end up in trouble get to learn from their mistakes and move on. That was a poor choice. Here are the consequences, and tomorrow is a new day, he said. Moving on Other changes in the school office will greet students in the year at West Jeff. Linda Martin, the principal s secretary, is retiring after 22 years, and assistant principal Cheryl Borst is leaving to assume the principal duties at Westridge Elementary School in Littleton. LaViolette hopes to work with incoming principal Becky Brown, who is now assistant principal at Deer Creek Middle School in Littleton. Brown gained notoriety in February 2010 when she assisted in subduing the attacker who shot two students at Deer Creek. When I arrived here three years ago, I just was handed a stack of folders, LaViolette said. (With Brown), we ll talk about the meat and potatoes and some of the issues that have to be addressed. I ll be here to answer questions. LaViolette hopes the school will continue to be a place that provides the community, students, staff and parents a place of connection and safety. I have history with a lot of the kids, he said of the 200 or so students who were with him at the elementary school and now at the middle school. He hopes he has touched students lives and made a difference with residents and in the community. He often receives s from former students who update him on their progress. Spend now, or spend more later GREG ROMBERG COLUMNIST When I first started working, some of the best advice I ever got was, Don t let the urgent get in the way of the important. Over the years, that idiom has helped me to step back and think about long-term priorities, immediate needs and how they should be balanced and prioritized. As we ve worked over the last generation to squeeze as many efficiencies as possible out of government, there are a plethora of examples where maintenance and replacement of capital assets were delayed too long, ultimately costing taxpayers too much in both dollars and human costs. Coloradans have been spared catastrophic accidents that have occurred in other states when a bridge fails, but deteriorating roads and bridges in Colorado have forced us to face dedicated fee increases to make them safe again. Another very visible local example is the dome at the state Capitol, which is currently being repaired through a fund-raising campaign that would never have been necessary if we had conducted maintenance on an ongoing Our Readers Write Signs at elementary school were informative, helpful Editor: I ve been cogitating for a time on the Post No Signs directive that has appeared on the West Jeff Elementary School fence. People posted signs about community events and removed them within reasonable time after their events finished. Those signs provided a great community bulletin board. The signs, invariably, were well made. Nothing crude or propagandistic was placed. Conifer is stretching. Much has been written about our need for a sense of community. We have several organizations actively pursuing a historic district, a museum and saving the Yellow Barn. Churches and service organizations such as the 9HealthFair, Community Veterans Coalition, fire departments and the Conifer Area Council have used the West Jeff Elementary School fence to announce community activities, meetings, services and needs. I ve been told that it s policy to post no signs on county property. Why is it that the elementary school can post a sign adjacent to the Post No Signs directive? And a rather limp and floppy sign as well, I might add. Let s keep Conifer vital and informed and return to the responsible use of the West Jeff Elementary School fence to talk about what we re doing. JOE DIX Conifer Rec district right out of P.T. Barnum, Wizard of Oz Editor: If at first you don t succeed, try, try, again. If a Conifer recreational district, center, or what have you, was such a grand and viable idea, would you guess that a private developer would have invested and subsequently profited? This was the fifth time this proposal has been placed in front of the voters, and thank God it gets voted down every time. This plan was based upon deceit, in which its sole purpose was to make a select few rich(er), not to enrich the community. Hokum. P.T. Barnum was right. So, if you believe in magic, then you voted for the rec district. Here s a shocker: The rec district has never been about kids or families. The smoke, wires and mirrors behind no taxes, of course unless we (the board) see a need for a mill levy, is that had this been approved by voters, within two years basis. Similarly, equipment has a usable life, and it s often more expensive to maintain rather than to replace things after their useful lives have passed. The County School District has come under some fire lately for planning to spend almost $9 million to replace its phone system at the same time that a package of $40 million in cuts is being implemented in response to reductions in state funding to local school districts. At first blush, it seems odd that we d replace the phone system if the cuts could be mitigated with those funds. But further inspection suggests the district has thought through the decision and its implications and has made a sound decision. First of all, the $8.8 million we ll spend is spread over four years, so there s not much ability to mitigate cuts in a meaningful way. Additionally, most of the money being used comes from federal technology funds that have limited applicability for the areas that are being cut. Finally, the phone system, which was originally installed in 1994, is nearing the end of its useful life. Both the cost and complications of maintaining this system will continue to increase as parts become harder to find. When there are phone outages, like the one at Evergreen Middle School last month, it becomes harder and takes longer to fix them. Pick the cliché: Whether it s penny wise and pound foolish or don t throw good money after bad, the district must be strategic about making these kinds of decisions. Critics of the new system are right to insist that the school district use our precious resources efficiently and effectively and look for ways to mitigate the negative impacts of budget difficulties. However, we can t let the urgent get in the way of the important, and it s important that we adequately plan for the future and replace this phone system before it becomes obsolete or the cost of maintaining it becomes a waste of taxpayer dollars. Continued existence can be obtained only by a massive tax-based budget. Wake up, taxpayer. The taxpayer well never runs dry! Just ask any politician. Most Americans feel lucky to have an income, and with food, gasoline and other necessities rising in price and going through the roof, more taxes of any kind will only make matters worse. Perhaps you re one of the elite with money and can afford a mill levy on your property. Most aren t. Most in the Conifer area would never use whatever facilities developed and offered with use fees, of course. Follow the Yellow Brick Road. Just for argument sake, let s say the rec district passed and was built. Unless you re fortunate enough to live on Foxton Road, once you get everyone in the little red wagon for the trek, you would spend as much or more of your valuable time to drive to the splendor that is the rec district. Fact: The drive to Evergreen or Foothills to use those already-established rec facilities would be no more time, effort or expense. Don t forget that on your arrival, the fees (even though you re being taxed), will raise their ugly heads. So, gather the Lion, the Tin Man and the Scarecrow to meet the Wizard, who spent a fortune to buy the election, with gold coins glistening like sugar plums in mind as the reward. You re not in California anymore, Dorothy. Last but certainly not least is the enormous decrease in school enrollment and the housing turnover in the Conifer area. As a 32- year resident of Conifer who built the house we live in, Conifer is not just some quaint cabin in the woods to escape the big city it s our home. Darn right we re protective and don t accept change, especially ridiculous change, lightly. The very people who embrace the smoke, wires and mirrors, and vote for a lost cause, more than likely won t be here in Conifer five years from now. Let s use the existing resources we all ready have access to i.e., Conifer High School swimming pool and gym, Foothills and Evergreen rec districts. Movie theaters and bowling alleys are noble ideas, but they ve been tried and failed. Think about it rationally, not emotionally. I m over the moon; I m so elated, Weiss said. I feel it was a joint effort of all the members of the community, and we had the support from the district and entities like the Foundation. sage that symbolizes how much hope there is for Japan, Paxton said. We re all sending good thoughts. Paxton painted a tall candle with a flame burning bright and bearing words such as helping hands, joy, friends, family, peace and kindness. One word is written on the flame of the candle: hope. Haunted by the images of lives and property swallowed by the tsunami, Paxton hopes people will see that, as the candle burns down, each kind word feeds the flame. Garrett Wilson, 13, wanted to send a hopeful message but found himself enjoying the process of working with others and making art. A veteran with 10 production videos under his belt, Spencer is intent about the project because he saw images of the destruction in Japan. I was shocked at the things I saw, Spencer said. I saw cars in trees and roads split in two. Lizzy Ainsworth, 13, drew Garrett said. I hope Japan can rise from the ashes. Spencer Vance, 13, said he s not very artistic, but he wanted to use his skills as a videographer and storyteller to contribute to the project through digital pictures and sound. He hopes the 10-minute video production documents the students efforts. The district can t go through this again. By February, Epp said, the district will decide if the outdoor labs once again face closure. Epp said the schools will be looking to develop partnerships as a way to finance the popular outdoor classrooms. We could be looking at the same thing next year, Epp said. The two outdoor lab schools cost the district $900,000 annually, and in the last 10 years have provided outdoor education for 6,000 students, according to Setzer. Epp said only one more week of outdoor lab class remains for Jeffco students, and then his facility will host a few organizations over the summer to bolster revenue. The first Jeffco students will return Aug. 29 and will pay a higher student fee for attending an Outdoor Lab School. Fees will increase from $199 to $300 for the school year. Students at West Middle School have created a mural and video project to send messages of hope to the people of Japan. Plate 3 - First Week of the David Epp, principal at the Mount Evans Lab School, said he was thrilled that the labs will remain open, at least for one more year. We at the lab didn t do it; everybody did it, Epp said. The lab is a part of Jeffco culture; it s bigger than any of us. Epp said the support has been amazing, with some PTA groups raising as much as $5,000. He s especially grateful for the support the Jeffco school board showed with its appropriation. Epp said the board s action showed that, even in tough times, the program is worthwhile for Jeffco students. That s what saved us, Epp said. We thank the board for this. Weiss who was a sixth-grade teacher and principal at the Mount Evans Outdoor Lab, said many staff members live at the labs and would have lost their homes, not just their jobs. MOUNTAIN BIKING READY FOR THE RIDE an Cycling League offers an opportunity for high school students to test mountain courses Bryan Walz has been looking to for an opportunity to work with kids for a while. And even though he s organized rock climbing outings in the past, his true passion is mountain bike racing. Last year, the Colorado Cycling League was formed, giving Walz the perfect opportunity to get involved, and he jumped at the chance. I ve just always wanted to do something with kids, Walz said. I ve done a lot of rock climbing things and was always looking for that one thing where I could give back to the community, and this kind of came up at an opportune time. It looks like it s all falling into place, so I m pretty excited about it. Walz began mountain bike riding in 1985 and will be the head coach of Team Evergreen. Along with some assistant coaches, he hopes to lead about 20 students in four team competitions starting in September. The team will start training perhaps as early as next week for the upcoming season, which, according to Walz, could have as many as 20 teams this year, up from 12 to 15 last year. Flater added a win in the USTA National Hardcourt 85 doubles championship at Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., with partner Tobey a few days later with a 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 in the finals. Walz and the other assistant coaches met with interested students May 25 at Evergreen Fire/ Rescue and gave a presentation on what the season would be like for each student with video examples of previous events in Northern California. He also shared positive success stories of other students, including one student last year losing more than 40 pounds by training and competing and the camaraderie among the racers. Conifer student Nile Irwin was at the meeting and competed with another team in the mountain A REAL COURT PRO biking league last year. Irwin, a rising sophomore, loved how positive the other racers made his experience. The atmosphere was so nice, everybody was friends, everybody knew people and you could get help anywhere you went, Irwin said. Irwin has been mountain biking for about two years and said that even though it requires hard work to get through a race, if a student rides regularly, he should be fine. If you went out for a mountain bike ride at least once a week, you would do pretty well, he said. There were also plenty of new students at the meeting without competitive riding experience who were looking forward to seeing what the activity has to offer. One of those students was Kylie Van Hoesen, who will be entering her junior year at Evergreen High School in the fall. She said that she is most looking forward to getting outside and having a great experience. I ve never done anything competitively, and just riding with all these friends, I m just stoked to get outdoors, she said. Throughout the summer, the students will train on average of twice a week and continue working when school starts, leading up to the four races that will begin Sept. 18 and culminate with a state championship on Oct. 30. Students pay $40 per race, or $140 if they sign up for all four races. Also included is a $100 club fee that includes shorts and a jersey. Walz said he realizes that can be expensive, and there are scholarships available for interested students who might not be able to afford the fees. My main objectives are for the kids to have a lot of fun, expose them to the sport, have them be safe and just be a great experience for them as kind of a life-long thing, he said. PRO WRESTLING Group hopes to spread the word at DRHS event BY MICHAEL HICKS Sports Editor Matt Yaden has a vision of what professional wrestling is supposed to be like. It s not what you might think. The 29-year-old Mansfield, Ohio, native and founder of New Revolution Wrestling doesn t see a group of overweight, out-of-shape, beer-drinking wrestlers who were embraced when the entertainment first came to television in the 1940s and 50s. No, for him, it s more of an artform told by athletic-looking gladiators who people pay to watch do things in a ring that they can t. My vision goes back to putting a product out there that people feel like it s the same when they turn on TV (nowadays) and watch it, said Yaden, an assistant wrestling coach at Dakota Ridge High School. It doesn t look like a ring in a bar with a bunch of guys in sleeveless shirts and shorts who are 5-foot-8 and weigh 160 pounds. I want to have something that is known around the city, state. But the biggest thing I want to stop hearing is that they have that out here. Otherwise meaning that people, in general, don t know that the entertainment of professional wrestling, outside of those who wrestle or their circle of friends, exists in Colorado. Yaden hopes to dispel that notion on June 4 when he runs his one-year anniversary show at Dakota Ridge High School. The event, in which a portion of the proceeds benefit the school s football program, kicks off at 5 p.m. and features co-main events. Burly Jesse Williams faces WANT MORE? Showcase athleticism While pro wrestling is widely known to be scripted entertainment, Yaden and executive producer Swann Christopher hope to present NRW as a family-friendly athletic showcase. I have a circle of friends, mostly actors, that were not familiar with this at all. They didn t know it existed, said Christopher, a 41-year-old graduate of Hofstra University. Some of them with kids bring their kids and they love it. We not only want to entertain, but we want to promote athletics, a healthy lifestyle, good eating, exercise. But to grab attention NRW must grow a loyal fan base that knows it even exists and to do that Yaden believes it takes a talent roster that spectators believe are more than their next-door neighbor and a performance that leaves an impression. It s knowing that when they show up that they re going to leave having seen a professional show with production value with athletes who look like guys they see on TV when they turn it on, Yaden said. This little redcapped sparrow probably lived in or along the edge of natural openings in the forest, such as along streams and lakeshores or along the edge of Sylvia Brockner Our natural world natural clearings where trees had blown down or died from old age or other reasons. Then when human beings started to make small clearings in the forest for their homes, towns and agriculture, the chipping sparrows found more habitat available and began to increase in numbers. Almost everyone seemed to have a pair nesting in their backyard. I well recall the chipping sparrows that nested in our yard every year when I was a child. My father had planted a Japanese kerria shrub on the north side of the cow barn. The chipping sparrows nested every year in the shrub, and although the nest was probably not more than five feet above the ground, I remember my mother lifting me up, so I could see the four tiny greenish-blue eggs, which were covered with dark brown or black spots, splotches and squiggles. Here in our Colorado yard, the migration of chipping sparrows reaches its peak during the last weeks of May, although a few may move through as early as March. This year, the peak day was May 15, when I counted nine chipping sparrows on the feeder and 12 or more feeding on the ground below. By May 23, they had all moved on with only four summer residents still coming to the feeder. There is also a period of fall migration usually in September and October when these little sparrows move southward for many days. There are two subspecies of chipping sparrows found in Colorado, and their slight differences and the plumage of juvenile birds often confuse people. Migration often brings a few clay-colored sparrows. These very similar birds need to be carefully studied especially in late summer and early fall when immature plumage can still be seen. As we finally move into warmer weather, watch for chipping sparrows at your feeder. They prefer small seed, such as white proso millet; sunflower seeds seem to be just a bit large for them to handle. Watch as they make trips back and forth to feed their young, and you may be able to locate their nest. The eggs take about 11 days to hatch if we have warm weather but take a few days longer when it is cold. A small number of chipping sparrows may winter in Colorado along the southern border, but the vast majority move farther south into Mexico.
