1 Hardware Announcement February 28, 2006 IBM System Storage EXN1000 SATA expansion unit can now be ordered as partially populated and attaches to the N3700 filers Overview The IBM System Storage EXN1000 SATA expansion unit is a low cost, high capacity SATA disk storage device for the N series system storage. It attaches to the N3700, N5200, and N5500 filers. The EXN1000 3U disk storage expansion unit may be mounted in any industry-standard 19-inch rack. The EXN1000 contains: Dual redundant hot-pluggable integrated power supples and cooling fans Dual redundant disk expansion unit switched controllers Fourteen hard disk drive bays The is shipped with a minimum of five SATA disk drives, up to a maximum of 14 disk drives (all of the same capacity), in either 250 GB or 320 GB physical capacities. With 250 GB SATA hard disk drives, each EXN1000 provides a maximum of 3.5 TB of physical storage capacity. With 320 GB SATA hard disk drives, each EXN1000 provides a maximum of 4.48 TB of physical storage capacity. You may order a minimum of five SATA disk drives and up to a maximum of 14 disk drives (all of the same capacity), in either 250 GB or 320 GB physical capacities. The 250 GB SATA disk drives provide a maximum of 3.5 TB of physical storage capacity. The 320 GB SATA disk drives provide a maximum of 4.48 TB of physical storage capacity. Key prerequisites The IBM System Storage EXN1000 SATA expansion unit requires a Fibre Channel attachment to an N series appliance (filer). 2 Description Up to three EXN1000 expansion units can be attached to an N3700 series filer. The maximum physical storage supported by N3700 filers is 16.8 TB, including storage in the N3700 and all attached EXN1000s. The maximum number of EXN1000s that may be attached to an IBM N5200 or N5500 depends on the capacity of the SATA disk drives installed. 3 IBM United States Announcement Supplemental Information February 28, 2006 Cable features Fibre Channel cables are required to connect the EXN1000 FC storage expansion unit (2861 Model 001) to an N3700, N5200, N5500, or another EXN1000. Optical cables require the use of two small form-factor pluggable (SFP) gigabit interface converter (GBIC), one at each end of the optical cable. Optical cables are recommended. To meet your needs, cables are available in different lengths. When the two units being interconnected are in close physical proximity, such as in adjacent EIA positions within the same physical rack, a shorter cable length may be used. When the two units being interconnected are not in close physical proximity, such as one unit being in one rack and the other unit being in another rack, a longer cable should be used. The cable features that may be used to connect the EXN1000 are: SFP GBIC (#2010) FC S to EXP Cbl 0.5 m (#2020) (field install only) FC S to EXP Cbl 3.0 m (#2022) (field install only) 0.5 m FC Copper Cable (#2021) 3.0 m FC Copper Cable (#2023) 1.0 m FC Optical Cable (#2042) 2.0 m FC Optical Cable (#2043) 5.0 m FC Optical Cable (#2044) SFP GBIC (#2010): This feature provides two SFP GBICs. One or more of this feature is required if optical cables are ordered. When attaching an EXN1000 to a N3700 Model A10 using optical cables, one of the SFP GBIC feature (#2010) are required. For a single node N3700 (Model A10), there is only one cable that connects the AT-FCX Controller B in the EXN1000 to the lower (bottom) CPU module in the N3700. The single cable requires only two SFP GBICs, one for each end of that optical cable. Each SFP GBIC feature provides two SFP GBICs, so only one feature number 2010 is needed. When attaching an EXN1000 to an N3700 Model A20 or another EXN1000 using optical cables, two of feature number 2010 (containing a total of four SFP GBICs) are required. When attaching an EXN1000 to an N5200 Model A10 or A20, or to an N5500 Model A10 or A20, only one of feature number 2010 is required. The four onboard FC ports on the N5200 and N5500 include, as standard, SFP GBICs. Only the ends of the two optical cables connecting to the EXN1000 require SFP GBICs. FC S to EXP Cbl 0.5 m (#2020): This feature provides one, half-meter copper cable for connecting an EXN1000 to an N3700 Model A10 or A20. For attachment to an N3700 Model A10, one of this feature is required. For attachment to an N3700 Model A20, two of this feature is required. This feature does not use SFP GBICs (#2010). Note: This cable may not be long enough to connect an EXN1000 to an N series filer. 2.0 m FC Optical Cable (#2043): This feature provides two, two-meter optical cables for connecting one EXN1000 to another EXN1000, or to an N series filer. This cable feature requires SFP GBICs. 5.0 m FC Optical Cable (#2044): This feature provides two, five-meter optical cables for connecting one EXN1000 to another, or to an N series filer. This cable feature requires SFP GBICs. Drive features The drives will be installed, in the plant, in the EXN1000 SATA expansion unit for which it is ordered. On the initial order for the, a minimum of five drives must be ordered, and a maximum of 14 drives may be ordered, all of the same capacity. 250 GB SATA Drive: This feature provides one 250 GB SATA drive. Physical storage capacity is 250 GB. 320 GB SATA Drive: This feature provides one 320 GB SATA drive. Physical storage capacity is 320 GB. HDD Blank Panel: This feature provides one blank panel used to close the space left vacant by the absence of a disk drive in one EXN1000 disk bay. 4 be ordered in a quantity sufficient to cover any unpopulated bay, that is, the number of disk drives and blank panels for the EXN1000 must equal 14. Power (line) cord features The EXN1000 ships standard with feature #9000 to connect the EXN1000 to a rack Power Distribution Unit (PDU) that has IEC 320, sheet C13, type power outlets. Drive bays not populated by a disk drive must be covered by blank panels (#4099). Limitations The is supported only in rack installations. This product is functional with the iseries and OpenPower platforms. However, on the iseries, support is only available on Power Linux and AIX partitions, not i5/os.
