Strong world-wide wide political support to move to IPv6 All major software firms have announced IPv6- enabled products All major manufacturers are gearing up to be IPv6 ready

3 Next Generation Internet IPv6 Addressing space is the most visible feature of IPv6. IPv6 uses 128 bits addresses es,, pushing the theoretical limi of unique IPv6 nodes to about 340 billion billion billion billion unique addresses! A must to implement always-on, peer-to-peer communications, machine-to-machine communications,... Other significant capabilities of IPv6 include: Integrated quality of service (QoS), Reintroduces end-to-end security, Automatic configuration (plug and play), data multicasting, More efficient network route aggregation at the global backbone level.... IPv6 is a key issue on the road ahead to the e-economy. e economy.

7 Where are we going with IPv4? IPv4 is leading us to a world that encourages walled gardens and information barriers, discouraging innovation. NAT-induced, work-arounds, digital divide, etc. There is still no IPv6 killer application,, but restoring the true Internet will allow another wave of evolution, innovation and creativity.

8 Where are we Today with IPv6? IPv6 is a mature technology Stable base standards (still being polished, as with IPv4!) Stable products (routers & operating systems, etc.) Emerging ISP support Large stable public domain applications Emerging commercial applications and middleware IPv6 is a committed technology Required for full 3G deployment Required by defence industry Required by emerging markets and economies Required for further innovation Required to mitigate the digital divide

13 Some Recent Press News (I) ISPs ignore IP timebomb, ISPs are storing up trouble by ignoring IPv6 [ ] The predicted surge in users signing up for "always-on" broadband connections will force service providers to upgrade to IPv6 in the next few years. Service providers could do the simple, short-lived thing, duplicating and extending their existing IPv4-based services. But in a year or two they will run out of addresses... The broadband 'explosion' is still a relatively manageable number, but not for long Mobile vendor unveils first IPv4/IPv6 handset [11 [ ] The growth in internet-connected mobile devices and emerging internet markets, especially in the Asia-Pacific region, requires a change in standards. Interim fixes like NAT will, according to the vendor, work reasonably well for fixed devices. But they will create additional problems for mobile devices which can

Release, ] 04] Web-enabled enabled lamp casts light on IPv6,, Matsushita has announced a desk lamp that sets up an IPv6 Internet address and can be controlled through a LAN [ ] Japan, China and South Korea are reportedly planning to jointly develop IPv6, in a move that will challenge the US- dominated market for current IPv4-based Internet technology [ ]. E-CH, the association recommending standards for egovernment in Switzerland, is working on a document tha will recommend the introduction of IPv6 capable systems [ ].

19 Conclusions Digital convergence is happening IP is becoming the unifying services architecture IPv6 resolves address limitations of IPv4 IPv6 also enables new services which cannot be implemented with IPv4 Always-on for every human being, Peer-to-Peer connectivity on global scale, etc. Challenges of mobile and wireless Internet can only be met by IPv6 IPv4 provides costly, limited, inefficient, insecure, patchy alternative

20 Conclusions (II) Strong worldwide political support to IPv6 Visibility of IPv6 reached unprecedented levels in political circles. More strategic thinking and global approaches are needed. Co-operation at National and International level is highly desirable. The European IPv6 TF and the Regional/National TFs are instrumental in paving the road ahead for IPv6. IPv6 transition has already started
