1 Faculty of Education Postgraduate Certificate in Professional Development in Education
2 The Faculty of Education is pleased to offer, from Session 2008/2009, an innovative new PG Certificate in Professional Development in Education which aims to provide a coherent accredited pathway for teachers continuing professional development. Who is the programme for? The new Certificate in Professional Development in Education offers a unique opportunity for all teachers in all sectors to obtain a formal qualification for their professional development. For the first time it provides a pathway for credit accumulation through attendance at standard CPD short courses. Case Study 1 Mr Paul Smith is a primary school teacher who qualified with a BEd Degree three years ago. Following a successful probationary year, Paul has been employed for the last 18 months in St Smithen s Primary School where he initially took over a Primary 2 class and since then has been teaching in a composite primary 4/5 class. During the academic session 2008/09 Paul took the opportunity to undertake 4 one day courses of CPD at the Faculty of Education, University of Glasgow. He selected the following courses Educating Responsible Citizens Taking Active Learning Beyond P1 Seasons of the Liturgical Year Drama and the Curriculum for Excellence for Upper Primary He then discovered that if he signed up for the Post Graduate Certificate in Professional Development in Education he could make use of these 4 days of CPD to complete the first of 3 courses, Reflection, which allows him to work towards an M Level certificate.
3 Case Study 2 Miss Marie Smith is qualified and fully registered to teach maths at secondary level following a degree at university and completion of a PGDE secondary programme. She has been teaching for 2 years. Following a professional development review in school, Marie decided to undertake a series of CPD activities in the Faculty of Education, University of Glasgow. She selected 4 one day CPD courses Beginner Teacher Higher Maths Successfully Teach Higher Maths Creating Video Tutorials ICT Planning Change which were designed to support her development as a Maths teacher and in anticipation of being assigned a Higher Maths class. While attending the CPD events Marie was made aware of the possibility of achieving the Post Graduate Certificate in Professional Development in Education. To complete the first course towards this certificate Marie would have to attend a 2 hour assessment tutorial and submit an assignment based on the 4 days of CPD she had completed. This would comprise a reflective essay of 3000 words and portfolio of evidence indicating the extent and nature of recent professional development activity she had undertaken during the 4 days of CPD. If she is successful this would result in her gaining 20 SCOTCAT credit points towards the Post Graduate Certificate in Professional Development in Education which requires a total of 60 points. Marie then has optional pathways to complete the certificate and gain the additional 40 points required eg 4 days CPD + assignment + tutorial x2, 4 days CPD + assignment + tutorial x1 and a 20 credit course from the menu of Professional Certificates provided by the Faculty of Education.
4 offered by the Faculty of Education at the University of Glasgow. Mrs Jones began by selecting 4 days of CPD. She chose courses which would address curriculum change and development which had taken place in her absence. She selected Case Study 3 Mrs Jones is a Primary Teacher in New Street Primary School. She has been teaching for 10 years and she qualified as a teacher by taking a history degree and completing the PGDE Primary qualification. As part of her other ongoing Professional Development she enrolled in the Post Graduate Certificate in PE and successfully completed Course 1. She deferred from the Certificate at this point because she was going on maternity leave. When she returned to work a year later she found her interests had changed, as had school priorities. She decided to continue her professional development by changing from the designated PE programme to the Post Graduate Certificate in Professional Development in Education which allowed her to continue her ambition of gaining credits towards a Post Graduate Certificate and perhaps subsequently a Masters Degree in Education. This allowed her to select from a variety of CPD opportunities Early Level Conference: Curriculum for Excellence Planning Change Drama and Curriculum for Excellence Primary Middle Stages Curriculum for Excellence: an Introduction to the Experience and Outcomes in Science at Early and First Level She then completes the necessary assessment tutorial and assignment and achieves a further 20 SCOTCAT points towards her Certificate. Then Mrs Jones signs up for her first level course in Children s Literature (20 credits) to complete her Post Graduate Certificate of Professional Development in Education.
5 What will I get from this programme? An M-level pathway through CPD activities which enhances an ongoing theoretical and practical foundation in approaches to learning and teaching. Encouragement to maintain a critical and analytical approach to my practice through reflective engagement with evidence-based learning opportunities. Flexibility in order to meet CPD needs as they evolve throughout my career. See myself as a learner who will continue lifelong learning through further postgraduate study and provide me with the means to navigate between different levels of CPD. Programme structure Step 1 Attend 4 CPD day courses (or agreed equivalent) of your choice at the University of Glasgow, Faculty of Education. You will have up to five years from initial registration on the programme to accumulate credits towards the Postgraduate Certificate. Step 2 Complete Assignment 1 Reflection. Satisfactory completion of Assignment will be worth 20 Masters level credits. Step 3 Attend a further 4 CPD day courses (or agreed equivalent). Step 4 Complete Assignment 2 Reflection into Action One. 20 further credits available. Step 5 Attend a further 4 CPD day courses (or agreed equivalent). Step 6 Complete Assignment 3 - Reflection into Action Two. 20 further credits available. Candidates can now exit with the full Postgraduate Certificate, or they can bank their credits within another Postgraduate qualification at the University of Glasgow, Faculty of Education.
