1 The University of Jordan Faculty: Faculty of Business Department: Business Management Semester: First Semester Academic Year: Organizational Behavior ( ) Course Description This course deals with human behavior in a variety of organizations. Conceptual frameworks, case discussions, and skill-oriented activities are applied to each topic. Topics include communications, motivation, group dynamics, leadership, power, the influence of technology, and organizational design and development. Class sessions and assignments are intended to help students acquire the skills that managers need to improve organizational relationships and performance and understanding of basic and fundamental concepts of organizational behavior (OB). The course will increase student awareness of the theoretical and practical aspects of OB. Learning Objectives Understand the basic fundamental concepts of organizational behavior and its application in managing people. Apply the different approaches to organizational behavior and enhance the human relationships within the organization. Explore the relationships among the various components of organizational behavior and their effectiveness. Intended Learning Outcomes (ILOs): Successful completion of the course should lead to the following outcomes: 1 /7

2 A. Knowledge and Understanding: Students are expected to Be provided with a conceptual framework for understanding human work behavior in the organizational setting. Describe systematically how people behave under variety of conditions Understand why people behave as they do Predict future employee behaviour and to control & develop human activity at work. B. Intellectual Analytical and Cognitive Skills: Class sessions and assignments are intended to help students to: Acquire the skills that managers need to improve organizational relationships and performance and understanding of basic and fundamental concepts of organizational behavior. Increase the students awareness of the theoretical and practical aspects of OB. Know the challenges faced by today s organizations. Deal with today s workforce. Demonstrate the competencies needed by effective managers. Understand the importance of effective organizational behavior. C. Subject- Specific Skills: Students are expected to Improve their ability to think analytically, systematically, and critically about various aspects of how managers can utilize principles of organizational behavior. Improve their ability to analyze and understand organizational situations in terms of OB theories and concepts. Improve the students skills in reacting appropriately to organizational situations using OB concepts. Improve their ability to create and maintain healthy and productive work environments. D. Transferable Key Skills: Students are expected to Identify key theoretical aspects and practical applications of organizational behavior. Apply OB concepts and theories to analyze and improve work situations. Understand and leverage their traits and OB competencies in the workplace for professional success and as a potential organizational leader. 2 /7

Define job satisfaction and show how it can be measured. Required Test 5 Identify the sources of emotions and moods. Apply concepts about emotions and moods to specific OB issues Required Test 6 Explain the factors that determine an individual s personality. Demonstrate how the Big Five traits predict behavior at work. Identify other personality traits relevant to OB. Required Test 7 & 8 Explain the link between perception and decision making. Apply the rational model of decision making and contrast it with bounded rationality and intuition. List and explain the common decision biases or errors. Explain how individual differences and organizational constraints affect decision making. Chapter 7 & 8: Motivation Concepts Required Test 9 & 10 Identify four early theories of motivation and evaluate their applicability today. Apply the key tenets of expectancy theory to motivating employees. Identify the characteristics of effective teams Chapter 12: Leadership Required Test 14 & 15 Define authentic leadership and show why effective leaders exemplify ethics and trust. Demonstrate the role mentoring plays in our understanding of leadership. Address challenges to the effectiveness of leadership. Teaching and Learning Strategies Don t be surprised if you find that in many real situations, there is no single right or wrong answer. Moreover, your teacher will not expect you just to sit quietly in the class but expect you to ask or answer questions, share your experiences and observations, discuss and analyze the various theories and concepts of organizational behavior. In this course, you will have three contact hours of class per week distributed over 16 weeks. Each student is encouraged to read the required assignment before the class begins. Students are expected to be in class before it starts, and any student not bringing with him/her the required textbook, and other needed materials will not be admitted into the classroom. The instructor will use a variety of ways to help you acquire the fundamental concepts and knowledge. During class, you are expected to practice the knowledge acquired through lectures and develop the relevant skills. Your instructor will be available to help you evaluate your learning progress and identify areas for further development. You will need to be proactive in identifying the issues you would like to consult with your instructor. Therefore your self-awareness and self-motivation will be the key to the effectiveness of this part of learning. Apart from the three hours class contact time, you are expected to spend at least six hours on what we call Independent Learning. During this time, you are in charge. Your instructor may or may not give you specific tasks but would expect 5 /7

6 you to use the time productively. You should spend the time going over the concepts you find difficult to grasp in class or practice some of the skills you have learnt. You can do some by yourself or by teaming up with some of your fellow classmates. Attendance is essential and students will miss quizzes if they are absent. If a student must miss a class for a certain reason, he/she must present the formal form duly signed by the dean. Each student is expected to turn off his/her cell phone prior to entry into the classroom. Remember that university regulations prohibit students bringing cell phones to the examination hall. In order to achieve Distinction in the course you must demonstrate the achievement of all the learning outcomes by playing an active part in the group work and be able to articulate your learning experience in a clear, concise and convincing manner. Your result will depend on how much effort you demonstrate during the semester. Projects and Assignments Each student can choose one of the course topics to write a report of about 5-7 (A4 pages) which should be submitted before the set dates of the final exam. Thereafter, problems are dealt with by the Department Chair and if still unresolved the Dean and then ultimately the Vice President.
