1 Assist Americas Global Emergency Services Policy Stockton maintains for traveling faculty and staff a Global Emergency Services policy via Assist America. The attached brochure represents the emergency services program that provides the Stockton traveler with access to doctors, hospitals, pharmacies, and certain other services when faced with a medical emergency while travelling more than 100 miles or more from Stockton. It is not a medical insurance plan and does not pay for medical expenses. Travelers should detach the card located on the bottom right corner of the brochure and carry it with them. The card contains telephone numbers for reaching Assist America for assistance and a Reference Number you must give to the Assist America operator as verification that the traveler is entitled to the medical services. It is important to keep your identification card with you at all times so that you can call for services whenever you need them. Medical Insurance The Assist America policy is not travel or medical insurance, rather it is a provider of global emergency services. Assist America s services do not replace medical insurance during medical emergencies away from home. All medical costs incurred should be submitted to your health plan and are subject to the policy limits of your health coverage. However, you can t assume your insurance will go with you when you travel. It s very important to find out BEFORE you leave whether or not your medical insurance will cover you overseas. You need to ask your insurance company two questions: Does my policy apply when I m out of the United States? Will it cover emergencies like a trip to a foreign hospital or a medical evacuation? In many places, doctors and hospitals still expect payment in cash at the time of service. Your regular U.S. health insurance may not cover doctors and hospital visits in other countries. If your policy doesn t go with you when you travel, it s a very good idea to take out another one for your trip at your own expense.
