2 RPA Executive Committee officers and support staff President and Newsletter Editor: Peggy O Toole, Ph.D. (707) Vice-President: Greg Thigpen, Psy.D. (707) Past-President: Mary Susan Sams, Psy.D. (707) Secretary: Jeannie LeMesurier, Ph.D. (707) Treasurer and CPA Chapter Rep: Michael Pinkston, Ph.D. (707) CE Coordinator: Carol Weser, Ph.D. (707) Disaster Response Committee Chair: Richard Zimmer, Ph.D. (707) x326 Ethics Committee: Ann Strack, Ph.D., Jeff Kahn, Ph.D., Michael Pinkston, Ph.D., and Bill McCausland, Ph.D. President s Column Peggy O Toole, Ph.D. As we start 2013, I am thinking about both the recent RPA gatherings and the interesting events we are planning for this year. We had large turnouts for both the 2012 Holiday Party in December and the recent bird walk in January. I want to thank Jeannie LeMesurier and her husband, Jim for hosting the Holiday Party in their lovely home. I also want to thank Jeff Martin, Ph.D., for leading the very fun and interesting bird walk at the Ellis Creek/Shollenberger park areas. Jeff has been active in leading bird walks for a couple of other organizations and has a vast knowledge about birds and bird behavior. I hope that we can convince him to do this again next year. Jeff is also a CE event speaker for us on April 3, and, in his other capacity as anxiety disorders specialist, will present on Fear, Phobias and Medical Procedures. Before this, we have a CE event at the end of this month (February 28) by Peter Dunlap, Ph.D., on Emotion and Transformation: Changing Individuals, Couples, and Communities. Both of these events look to be very interesting and I look forward to seeing RPA members there. Tesa Carlsen is another person I would like to thank, for her seven years of service on the RPA Executive Committee. Tesa was the RPA Treasurer for the past few years, and served in several other roles during her time on the board. At this point, she has decided to make more room in her life for things like travel and other adventures. What I recall best about serving alongside Tesa during the past two years is her compassion for the less fortunate and her ability to get others excited about ideas and about trying new things. Tesa is also great fun, and has the kind of infectious laugh that ignites a discussion with joy; I will certainly miss her presence at our meetings this year. 2

3 Although volunteering for our board includes a certain degree of work, I have been grateful for the opportunity to become more involved in our community. Grateful, in part, because of the chance to make friends, socialize and get to know my colleagues in the area better. I am also thankful to be a part of a small group of people behind the scenes at the RPA the board and support staff who keep the engine humming here and the RPA events running smoothly. This year, Greg Thigpen takes on the role of Vice President. Greg is such a wonderful and thoughtful person to work with, and someone you know you can always rely upon. He is sure to catch details that others might miss, which has been so important to us during the website upgrade. Greg also has a wicked sense of humor, so be sure to sit next to him at one of our events and chat him up. Mary Sue Sams is in the position of Past-President this year. Mary Sue was President two years ago, and she was asked to stay on in this role again. One of the things I appreciate about Mary Sue is that she is a true leader she has a vision, a good sense of priorities, and the ability to step up as needed. I know of few others who can balance a sense of playfulness along with the ability to keep a group both focused and productive. In other words, Mary Sue can herd cats with a smile on her face. Michael Pinkston holds dual roles this year as Treasurer and CPA Chapter Representative. As I said at our Holiday Party, Michael is one of the most generous and kind people that I know. Michael spent countless hours last year working with a web designer to upgrade our website so that new memberships, renewals, and CE event registrations can be done online and with credit cards. For this, I have dubbed Michael our Technology President, (although this is done with some degree of impertinence, as Michael is so well known for his advice to put down your gadgets and go enjoy nature ). Carol Weser is our CE Coordinator again this year. Carol is one of the most interesting people you will meet she is well-travelled and has many stories of her adventures with other cultures. And, of course, Carol is well-known for her sense of humor and fun. She has been wonderful in her role as unofficial RPA ambassador during our CE events. She is quite the heart and soul of our organization, and very importantly she is diligent in ensuring that you get your CE credits (never a complaint). Jeannie LeMesurier joins us as Secretary this year. Jeannie is enthusiastic about our organization, and I look forward to working with her and getting to know her better over the next year. I am confident that she will contribute some great ideas as she brings a new perspective to our board. Tesa Carlsen, Ph.D. The RPA thanks Tesa Carlsen for her years of service on the board. As President last year, Michael Pinkston emphasized involvement and a sense of community, and I hope to build on this during the coming year. I hope that anyone interested in a position on the Executive Committee will contact me or another board member by October or November (elections are in December). However, I also hope to find less formal opportunities for members to participate in the organization. Many of you (including new members) have expressed interest in being more involved in this manner. Since we had such an enthusiastic response to the bird walk this month, I am open to the idea of increasing these kinds of events for our community, and I would love to hear the ideas for events that you, as RPA members, would be interested in attending. 3

10 February 28 CE Event Thursday, February 28, at 6pm at Osake Restaurant in Santa Rosa Emotion and Transformation: Changing Individuals, Couples, and Communities Presenter: Peter Dunlap, Ph.D. This evening we will take up a conversation about the transformative power of emotions in psychotherapy and our communities. In psychotherapy this transformation is supported by the use of emotion-focused practices that helps ease client suffering by developing what has been called emotion regulation, affect competence, or what Dr. Dunlap calls affect freedom. As psychologists we can extend this work into our communities for the sake of supporting what is being dubbed a rising empathetic civilization. April 3 CE Event Wednesday, April 3, at 6pm at Union Hotel, 280 Mission Blvd in Santa Rosa "Fear, Phobias and Medical Procedures Presenter: Jeffery R. Martin, Ph.D This presentation will explore the use of exposure-based cognitive and behavioral therapy for medical fears, and how these fears are nested within more general phobias that exist both within and outside medical settings. Among the fears that will be discussed are panic attacks, feeling trapped, social embarrassment, and contamination as they relate to such procedures as MRI imaging, medication, anesthesia, C-PAP, doctor exams, dental visits, blood tests, and surgery. Wings take flight, and glide throughout Winter morning s chill breathtaking beauty 10

12 Report from CPA Chapter Representative Michael Pinkston, Ph.D. As I hope all of you realize, RPA is a chapter of the California Psychological Association (CPA). I attended a CPA Board Meeting several weeks ago and this was the first meeting chaired by the 2013 CPA President, Dr. Mark Kamena, who has continued to be an active member of the Marin Chapter for many years and who last year also joined our Redwood Chapter. Much of the discussion at this meeting (as usual) was on the importance of the legislative advocacy that CPA must continue to do to influence legislation and other decisions in Sacramento that impact the profession of psychology and our future practice. As many of you know, important healthcare decisions are in the process of being made regarding the implementation of the Affordable Care Act in California. I heard a wise person say not long ago If you don t have a seat at the table when important decisions are being made, you could be surprised that you are on the menu. I am proud to say that CPA and its staff are well known and respected in the legislative offices but in order to remain at the table and have our voices heard, we need to increase our membership so that approximately 4000 psychologists in California are not the only ones paying dues to CPA to protect the ability of 20,000 psychologists to practice in our state. Although many of you are already members of CPA, I hope that if you are not you will take the time to go to the website at to learn more about the many benefits of membership in addition to supporting our advocacy for the practice of our profession. On the website you can learn about benefits by looking for the Member Advantage Program under the Membership Information section on the website. One benefit that I particularly enjoy is the ability to read interesting articles about our profession specific to our practice in this state in The California Psychologist which is published every two months. In each issue there is at least one article about an ethics or a legal issue which is an easy way to satisfy the BOP requirement that you stay informed regarding ethics. If you wish, you can go online after reading each of the ethics articles and by showing you read them receive 2 CE for each issue (up to 12 CE a year). Another one of my favorite benefits to CPA membership is that I get a discounted rate to the Annual Convention which is held in April and alternates each year between a southern and northern location. Several of you joined me last year in Monterey where our site was 2 short blocks from the boardwalk on the bay. This April we will be at the Marriot at very reasonable rates overlooking Newport Beach with an easy walk to the ocean. Over the 3-4 days of the convention it is possible to pick up 20 hours of CE credit by choosing between presentations on a variety of topics and by paying for those CE by simply registering for the convention. You can learn more about this particular convention by going to the CPA website. It will be my goal to keep you informed throughout the year on what CPA is doing related to advocating for our profession. I am hoping that when you receive information from me, you will be motivated to write letters if asked for, pass what you have learned on to others that you feel need to be informed, and consider joining CPA if you have not yet become a CPA Member. If you have any questions about CPA or want to learn more about the organization after checking out the website, I hope you will contact me at mrpinskton@aol.com or (707)
